AWarmest personal greetings,

As I sit here writing to all of you it is a sunny summer day without even a hint of fall in the air. People on the street are headed

to the beach with children in tow, and there is the scent of sunblock lotion in the air. I know that very soon the holiday season will

be upon us and you will be receiving this, our fourth edition of Fredric Rubel Jewelers Magazine, with all the wonderful images of

jewelry and timepieces displayed across the pages.

This past year has flown by and we had quite an eventful year. In October of 2014, we had the distinct pleasure of having Italian

Jewelry designer Roberto Coin make a rare appearance with his very special collection of jewelry at the Montage Resort in Laguna Beach.

For those of you who were able to attend this extraordinary event and personally meet Roberto Coin, we hope you truly enjoyed the

experience. In March of this year my wife and I attended Baselworld in Basel, Switzerland. This is the jewelry industry’s most important

show for luxury brand watches and jewelry. We were able to get an early start on buying those special items that you will see in our

magazine and for the upcoming holidays.

We are pleased to share two feature articles in this year’s magazine. One is about my father, Fredric Rubel, and the other is a very

special tribute to one of the finest people at Rubel’s, Elsa Carlton.

We want to take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you, our clients and friends,

a wonderful holiday season. May you make the most of your time spent with friends and family

and enjoy this special time of year. It will be over before you know it!

With Gratitude,

David and Gary Rubel

T H E L E G A C Y O F

Fredric Rubel’s career in the jewelry industry

officially started in 1956, just after he graduated from

the University of California at Berkeley, when he

returned home to help his mom run the family jewelry

business. His father, Barney, started the business in

1928 with Rose at his side, but had recently suffered

a stroke. Fredric had been involved in the business for

many years, having grown up helping out in the store

and watching his parents, so unofficially, he started

much earlier than 1956, and his temporary plan to

come home and help his mom run the family business

lasted for sixty years!

One of the first things Fredric did was go back to

school — he began taking courses in gemology at the

Gemological Institute of America, via correspondence,

eventually earning his graduate gemologist degree.

He was a big believer in education and was intent on

becoming the jewelry professional in the town.

He started making changes to the business and

merchandising mix, transforming the store from a

credit operation into a fine jewelry store. “We carried

Silver flatware, cameras, movie projectors, men’s

leather goods, shaving and manicure kits, costume

jewelry and fine jewelry,” says David Rubel, who

along with his brother, Gary, now runs the business.

“Much to my grandmother’s dismay, my father started

acquiring more fine jewelry and introduced watch

lines, while slowly removing the costume jewelry and

giftware products,” says David.

In the mid 1960s, Fredric changed the name of the

business from Crescent Jewelry Company to Fredric

H. Rubel Jewelers. By the early 1970s, it had moved

from a street location to

a mall. The jewelry and

watch brands carried by

the store became more

prestigious, including

Phillipe, Lalique crystal

diamonds. Today, the

store stands as the oldest

independent Rolex

jeweler in Southern

California, and it has

expanded to include two

stores, one in Laguna

Beach and the other in

Mission Viejo, California.

Fredric H. Rubel Jewelers

is a member of the

American Gem Society.

Fredric, David and Gary

were recently honored at

the AGS conclave in San

Diego for being 30-year AGS title holders, with the highest credentials they

offer: Certified Gemologist Appraiser. There are only a handful of 30-year

CGAs in the country.

“The products and services we provide today reflect my dad’s desire to

maintain the highest level of honesty and integrity and to always deliver

something that is exceptional,” says David. “I think what our customers

most appreciate is that we don’t ever try to just sell them something, but

rather to advise them on making a smart jewelry purchase.”

Fredric is 81 now, and essentially retired from the daily business. He

and Joan just celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary. They enjoy being

around their six grandchildren. They play bridge two or three times a week

and do Pilates to stay fit. “One of the things that most impresses me about

my father is his eagerness to stay connected with people, technology, and

current events,” says David. “He still enjoys coming down to one of the

stores to meet with clients who need a jewelry appraisal. It’s not that he

has to do this; he just likes it!”

Elsa Carlton probably has more experience in the

jewelry business than the average jewelry-business

owner. She has worked at Fredric H. Rubel Jewelers

for over 45 years, and in that time, has become a valued member

of the Rubel family and the community. She was hired in 1968

at what was then called Crescent Jewelers when she was still a

high school student. Her job was to clean sterling silver and do

the mailing. “In over 45 years of working with us, Elsa has been

an enormous part of our success,” says David Rubel. “To say

that Elsa is an employee does not do justice to everything she

has done for and with our family over the years. This is the only

job she has ever known, and we are definitely the lucky ones!

“I think one of the most reassuring things for our customers

is always being able to come into the store and see that

familiar face,” says David. “She knows just about everyone

and can remember the most intimate details about people

and the events that shaped their lives. If it’s a birthday,

anniversary, the birth of a child or grandchild Elsa will call

and genuinely share in their happiness. If someone is sick or

has had a death in the family, Elsa will reach out to make

sure that they are doing okay.”

Whenever there is a store event, Elsa is the first to get

everything organized and the last to leave after everything

is cleaned up. But it is more than just her work ethic that

makes her special. Elsa is the shoulder to cry on when one

of the other employees is having a bad day, and always lends

a sympathetic ear. She is the cheerful smile that supports

all who know her. “To say she is a tremendous employee is

missing the mark,” says David. “She is a wonderful human

being in every way. Everyone who has worked with Elsa is a

better person for having been able to work alongside her.”

For more than 45 years, Elsa Carlton has made Fredric H. Rubel hum with life, wisdom and good will

Reaches New Heights

Rolex unveiled some new-generation

models and a new-generation movement

this year at Baselworld. The movement,

Caliber 3255, exceeds the standard set by

the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing

Institute (COSC), establishing a new

level of chronometric performance for

Rolex watches. The movement, backed

by 14 patents, represents improvements

in precision, power reserve, resistance to

shocks and magnetism, and reliability.

The new movement is being used in the latest iteration of the

brand’s most prestigious model, the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date,

known as the “presidents’ watch” thanks to the well-known and

eminent figures who have adopted it. The new Day-Date models,

in platinum or 18k gold, are available with a variety of new dials.

The dials on the platinum versions of any Rolex are always ice-blue

in color, and this one is no exception.

A similar new movement is being used in the latest gem-set

models of the Datejust Pearlmaster for ladies in a new 39mm

size, in 18ct yellow or white gold. The bezels of these models are

set with a color gradient of 48 baguette-cut sapphires — blue to

fuchsia pink, blue to green, or orange to yellow.

The new Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master in 18k gold with a black

dial was the talk of the Baselworld fair, where it was introduced

earlier this year. The Yacht-Master has been in the Rolex line since

1992, but this model is a first in three ways. The case is 18k rose

gold (Everose, as Rolex calls its proprietary alloy) with a ceramic

(Cerachrom) bezel. Previously, the Yacht-Master was available

only in stainless steel, with a platinum bezel. It is also the first

Rolex with a black dial. But even more surprising is the elastomer

(synthetic rubber) strap, another first. It’s called Oysterflex, and

is made of a very soft, flexible elastomer with an internal cushion

system that makes it extremely well fitting and comfortable. The

rubber is fitted over metal blades made of a titanium and nickel

alloy, so you get the strength of metal and the comfort of rubber.

The Yacht-Master 40 has the same cyclops window and Mercedes

hands, as well as the same movement, Caliber 3135, as the previous

Yacht-Master.

The Oyster Perpetual Lady-Datejust was also updated this year,

with a redesigned case, enlarged to 28mm, and a new movement,

the automatic Caliber 2236, which is fitted with a Rolex-patented

Syloxi hairspring in silicon for superior chronometric performance.

Many of the world’s top athletes have served

as Rolex ambassadors, and the brand is associated

with key sporting events, including Wimbledon

Tennis, the US Open Golf Championship, and

Formula 1 racing. In the equestrian world, the

company is a sponsor of the Rolex Grand Slam of

Show Jumping: CHIO Aachen, the CSIO Spruce

Meadows Masters Tournament, and CHI Geneva.

Rolex is also a sponsor of several yachting events,

including the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup and the Rolex

Swan Cup — both off the coast of Sardinia — the

Rolex Fastnet Race in the Celtic Sea, and the Rolex

Sydney Hobart Yacht Race in Australia. Brand

ambassadors include champion golfers Adam Scott

and Tiger Woods, racing legend Tom Kristensen,

tennis great Roger Federer, yachtsman Paul Cayard,

and equestrian Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum.

America, with the world following right behind, is back in business again, and it feels

mighty good. It looks good too. Today’s business suit is trending towards a no-nonsense,

hard-working model that, while still maintaining a slimmed silhouette, successfully fits a

wider segment of the population. Key to this are slightly longer jackets and higher-

rising trousers that appear more correctly balanced than they have over

the past several seasons. Crisp tailoring gives sharp definition to the

shoulderlines, and in some cases interior roping has been used to

delineate them even further. Jacket bodies trace the torso without

confining it. The trousers, too, are well cut and sometimes offer

more room at the top, thanks to a touch of pleating at the

waist. This not only provides a pleasing flow of fabric down

to the tapered leg, but it also allows you to slip a hand into

your side pocket without struggling.

Page 19: Fredric Rubel Jewelers Magazine

This fall’s no-nonsense attitude towards suiting styles is not only a breath of fresh air, it also has a lot in common with what your old high-school coach used to say on the eve

of a big football game: Stick to the fundamentals, and you’ll do all right.

TOWN

The addition of three-piece suits into this mix offers even more

dress options. Indeed, the appearance of a vest set off with a well-

shaped jacket and slightly pleated trousers is forcefully reminiscent

of menswear’s golden age of the 1930s. Shrug a big, double-breasted

overcoat over top, snap down the brim of your felt fedora, and

you’re ready to start channelling your inner Gary Cooper.

Just as classic are this season’s fabric patterns and colorations.

Blue (the color of the season in menswear), khaki, and gray,

worn on their own in a solid cloth or enlivened by pinstriping or

checks, always make good choices.

Two-button single-breasted jackets remain the market

leader, but there are signs that their days of solo sway are num-

bered. Three-button jackets have once again moved back into

the picture, as have six-button double-breasted jackets. In both

cases, you can make these styles come across as fresh simply by

doing them up on only the middle button. This relaxation of

the recent hard-and-fast rule about the number of allowable

jacket buttons is welcome news. A man should be able to chose

more than a single tailored style and select what suits him best

rather than succumbing to fashion dictates.

“Inspiration is one of my favorite words. It usually comes to me in different ways from my travels, from my own culture and from my curiosity. I pay attention to all fashion shows and the way women dress in different countries. I pay attention to arts and to nature and the animal world. I am always very attentive to understanding what is missing in the market and moving my creativity towards that but always following the fashion world. During 2014 and this year, the customers were looking for innovative total gold look collections with a fresh style and an antique soul. This has been my mood of inspiration for many of the most important current collections like Pois Moi, Golden Gate, Princess and New Barocco. They are all extremely modern in design but with a retro touch in the overall look.”

The Albion, first introduced in 1994, is one of David Yurman’s most recognizable designs. Albion is a celebration of the beauty of cushion-shaped gemstones with the signature checkerboard faceting that creates a greater play of color and light. Now, David Yurman unveils a refined new iteration of the Albion, with softer, more sensual edges and a setting that holds the stone closer to the skin. The colored gemstones are backed with sterling silver for enhanced brilliance, and diamonds are set in a mosaic pattern, creating a scintillating sparkle. David Yurman’s wife, Sybil, once told him she wanted a bracelet that told time. This was the starting point for a timepiece collection that combines signature David Yurman design elements with exceptional technology and craftsmanship. Now, playing on the new look of the Albion Collection, David Yurman is introducing a watch that truly combines timekeeping with jewelry. The watch dial is square with rounded corners, taking its inspiration from the collection’s recognizable cushion-shaped gemstones. The linked bracelet makes the design perfect for pairing with a stack of David Yurman bracelets. David Yurman, one of America’s leading jewelry designers, has become an icon of American style. A former sculptor, David began to design jewelry more than 30 years ago, developing his passion into a global business. His signature pieces have become legends in jewelry design.

“I am inspired by everything — art, design, fashion, photography, flea markets, and travel. Whatever my inspiration of the moment, my design process is always driven by one question: Can a woman give this piece of jewelry to her

daughter in 20 years? My newest Ceramic collection was directly inspired by the Art Deco period, when great jewelry featured a lot of black onyx

and white agate. I am also an avid collector of white pottery, which was an important movement during this same period and served as inspiration for me as well in developing this collection for fall.”

When you think of fine jewelry designer Penny Preville, it evokes images of elegant lacework and feminine detailing. The brand’s use of diamonds, rich colored gemstones, and vintage-inspired designs attracts women to its sophistication, but also its ability to be worn as everyday pieces. Now, with its brand aesthetic clearly defined, Penny Preville has begun to expand its look. Over the past few seasons, the brand has been quietly playing with more modern designs while not straying too far from its signature look. We got a sneak peek at what’s new from this revered brand for 2015, and here’s what we saw: Simplified designs inspired by romantic representations of the earth, moon, stars, and petals. Clean lines have replaced lacey designs. And gemstones have been replaced by a greater use of polished metal, ranging from white, yellow, and rose gold adorned with hints of pavé diamonds. Penny Preville shares, “I find inspiration in a woman’s lifestyle. I thrive on designing pieces that can worn every day, from day to night, and as I continue to grow as person, I am always striving to excite my customers with regularly evolving collections that still stay true to my aesthetic.” Penny Preville’s new collections for 2015 include Petals, Celestial, Geometric, to name a few. While the new looks are a slight departure from the signature Penny Preville look, these pieces are still feminine, classic, and as always, easy to wear. The new collections start at $1,500.

Page 27: Fredric Rubel Jewelers Magazine

F R E D R I C H . R U B E L M A G A Z I N E [27

I don’t remember much about the movie, but I do remember

the coffee in detail. In my attempt to appear sophisticated and

worldly, I drank it — but slowly and without enthusiasm. I

had never tasted coffee before and I realized my distaste for it

quickly. To me, it was nothing but a bitter, unnecessary way

to hydrate. I’d much rather have juice or a Diet Coke (both of

which I eschew today).

Coffee was something I associated with either housewives

or truckers. It was also something I thought was unnecessary

and unhealthful (due in part with its association with smoking

cigarettes).

Why housewives and truckers? I connoted coffee with

housewives because of the television programs that showed a

woman in an apron tending the stove, then sitting down for

a cup of coffee with the neighbor who always dropped by;

truckers because of their tendency to drink heaps of it to stay

awake for those long-distance hauls.

Since then, I’ve learned to love coffee. Perhaps my taste buds

finally appreciated its taste. Or my lifestyle slowly adapted. I

also now know about coffee’s health perks.

Coffee’s negative associations — among them stunted growth,

heart disease and even cancer — have been disproved. In fact,

emerging research points to coffee’s many health benefits. While

it may not be the best choice for everyone — pregnant women and

people who have trouble controlling their blood pressure among

them — for most people, coffee’s health benefits outweigh its risks.

Among the risks:

high consumption of

unfiltered coffee (as in Turkish or

French-pressed preparations) is associated

with slight elevations in cholesterol levels. That’s from

a substance called cafestol, which stimulates LDL (bad)

cholesterol. Cafestol is left behind when you use a paper filter.

And for people with a specific genetic mutation that slows

the breakdown of caffeine in the body, two or more cups of

coffee a day can increase the risk of heart disease.

But on the other side of the spectrum are the many protective

health benefits that coffee can confer: it may protect against

things like Parkinson’s disease, liver cancer, and type 2 diabetes.

Coffee is not just a way to get some caffeine; it contains

hundreds of different compounds, including antioxidants.

Antioxidants are vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that

can help protect your cells and repair the damage caused by free

radicals (molecules responsible for aging and tissue damage).

In fact, coffee is one of the richest sources of healthful

antioxidants in the average person’s diet. While some studies

suggest that caffeine — also available via tea, cocoa, and other

foods — can protect against Alzheimer’s and stroke, other

studies cast doubt on this connection.

But what is now certain is that coffee drinking is not an

unhealthy habit for most people. Rather, coffee drinkers may

have a lower risk of certain diseases, as well as reduced risk of

death from cardiovascular disease, compared with non-coffee

drinkers or those who rarely drink it.

Studies show it’s safe for many people to drink up to six

cups a day. But keep some things in mind: if drinking this much

gives you tremors, makes you anxious, stressed, and ultimately

sleepless, you need to cut back. Also, all cups are not created

equal. A cup of coffee is not a Grande at your local coffee

hangout (which has about 330 milligrams of caffeine), but

rather an 8-ounce cup containing 100 milligrams of caffeine.

Finally, watch what you add to all those cups: sugar and

cream can tack on lots of calories.

Of course, the best way to improve your health is not just to

drink coffee but also to focus on other lifestyle factors, such as

exercising regularly, quitting smoking, and eating more whole

grains, fresh fruits, and veggies. Getting enough sleep and

minimizing your stress aren’t bad, either.

If all those things could all come in a cup, it would be easy,

wouldn’t it? Starbucks (you’ve heard of them, right?) offers

some helpful tips for preparing coffee at home:

P R O P O R T I O N

Two tablespoons of freshly ground coffee for every 6 ounces

of water.

G R I N D

If the grind is too fine, the coffee can be bitter and unpleasant.

If it’s too coarse, the coffee can be watery. The grind required is

determined by the brewing method.

W A T E R

Because a cup of coffee is 98 percent water, use clean, fresh

water. Avoid water from water softeners, distilled water and

any other water with a strong taste. If you don’t like the taste of

your local water, you may want to use filtered or bottled water

when brewing.

F R E S H N E S S

Coffee is perishable. Unopened bags should be stored at

room temperature. Once the bag is opened, store in an

opaque, airtight container at room temperature. After

it’s brewed, it’s best to store coffee in a thermal carafe. Coffee

that is left sitting on the burner of a home machine will begin to

taste bad after about 20 minutes. Never reheat coffee.

hat is now certain is that coffee drinking is not an unhealthy habit for most people. W

Dazzlingyellow diamonds

Diamonds are the hardest of all gemstones and

therefore reflect light with a brilliance that outshines

all others. Among these, colored diamonds have

emerged as a favorite, particularly among jewelry

lovers who like to assert their individuality. Colored

diamonds are rare, but yellow diamonds are among

the most readily available natural colored diamonds

on the market. Yet even these are rare: for every

colored diamond found, there are at least 10,000

colorless ones.

The standard diamond color grading scale for

diamonds was developed by the Gemological

Institute of America. When the color is very intense,

it is classified as a fancy colored diamond. For fancy

colored diamonds,

the deeper,

purer and more saturated colors are usually the

rarest, most costly, and most desirable.

Yellow diamonds are brilliant and vibrant,

and stand out from the rest, which makes them a

favorite on the Red Carpet. Celebrities including

Jennifer Lopez, January Jones, and Kim Kardashian

have all worn big yellow diamonds. Even Elton John

is reported to be the owner of a 25-carat yellow

diamond ring.

Yellow diamonds are growing in popularity as

center diamonds in engagement rings as well. They

work well in vintage designs, where they sparkle

with a special brilliance that stands out from the

rest. The beauty of a yellow diamond is that, as the

most common of colored diamonds, it is affordable,

but rare enough that you won’t see one on every

woman walking down the aisle.

Natural colored diamonds are rare and therefore unique, which means jewelry containing them makes a statement about its owner

How to buy a colored diamond

Three of the most important factors impacting the price of a natural color

diamond are strength of color, rarity of color, and size.

Strength of color: The color intensity of a natural colored diamond can

be graded as Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense, or Fancy Vivid — with Fancy

Vivid constituting the highest grade. The stronger the intensity of a colored

diamond, the higher the value will be.

Rarity of color: The rarity of a colored diamond will affect its price. The

more common colors, such as gray, brown, and yellow, will generally have a lower

cost than rarer colors, such as pink, blue, green, purple, and orange, which occur

less frequently in nature. The rarest known and most expensive color of all is red.

Size: Large colored diamonds are extremely rare. This makes them exponentially

more expensive.

Prior to the early 20th century, diamonds were cut differently than today, giving off a softer glow than the brilliance we now associate with a beautiful diamond. In

1919, mathematician Marcel Tolkowsky calculated a specific set of proportions for the angles of a diamond’s facets which would deliver the optimum reflection and refraction of light. In so doing, he established the modern method of diamond cutting. His proportions became known as the Ideal cut, and they developed into an industry standard. Though cutters continue to experiment with different proportions, Tolkowsky’s formula always delivers an excellent finish. Even though Tolkowsky’s proportions are common knowledge throughout the industry, only a very small percentage of all diamonds are cut to those proportions. Both the characteristics of the rough stone and the skill of the cutter determine whether or not it can and will achieve those proportions. For all other diamonds, cut quality ranges from very good to good to fair to poor. Tolkowsky’s cousin, Lazare Kaplan, introduced the brilliant new stones to the market. Kaplan, himself one of the industry’s most renowned cutters, was born in 1883 in Russia and grew up in Belgium, one of 13 children in a family of jewelers. He immigrated to New York City on the eve of World War I, where his skill gained international regard. In 1936, he successfully cut the 726-carat Jonker diamond after more than a year of studying the stone. The Jonker — owned by famed jeweler Harry Winston — was an extremely complex diamond that would have shattered if hit the wrong way with a cleaver’s mallet. In fact, Kaplan himself would have shattered it had he not stopped himself at the last second before bringing down his mallet, because he suddenly spotted a microscopic bend on the surface of the stone that he had previously missed. He paused to study the diamond yet again, ultimately cleaving it successfully into 12 stones.

As the originator of the Ideal cut, Lazare Kaplan was the first diamond company to brand its stones and, later, the first to use a patented microscopic laser inscription to put a unique identification number and the Lazare logo on each diamond. More recently, the company was the first De Beers sightholder to develop a diamond-buying app for iPhone and Android devices. “Lazare changed the value proposition in diamond cutting from weight to beauty,” says company vice-president Marcee Feinberg. “As he dedicated his company to this standard, he established a reputation for consistency and precision that still endures today.” After World War II, Lazare Kaplan moved from lower to midtown Manhattan, near the city’s famed diamond district. Many jewelry industry honors and accolades followed for Kaplan and his sons, Leo and George. In 1984, the Kaplans sold the majority of the company to the father-and-son team of Maurice and Leon Tempelsman. Like Lazare Kaplan, Maurice Tempelsman grew up in the diamond business and immigrated to New York from Belgium, to escape the Nazis in World War II. Because diamonds were considered a critical material for defense, Tempelsman saw a tremendous opportunity in building the U.S. government’s stockpile in the days before synthetic diamonds were a viable option. Through his work, he became a renowned global statesman with significant political influence in both the United States and abroad. Today, Maurice is chairman of Lazare Kaplan International, and Leon is president. The late Robert “Bob” Spiesman, Maurice’s son-in-law and Leon’s brother-in-law, was executive vice-president until his death aboard American Airlines Flight 77, which crashed into the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.

Lazare Kaplan died in 1985 at age 102. Leo Kaplan died in 1984, but George Kaplan remained active in the business until his retirement a decade ago. He recently died at age 97. The only remaining Kaplan in the business is Paul Kaplan, Leo’s son, who works in the company’s division in Antwerp, Belgium. While any company can use Tolkowsky’s proportions for cutting, the difference is the dedication required to cut all diamonds to the quality of the original ideal proportions, says Feinberg. “Lazare has a big head start and a great technical advantage in perfecting the process. In our 112-year history, we have had only three quality control managers.” The company is also an industry leader in responsible business practices. “LKI fully supports and complies with policies that protect fundamental human rights and the dignity of the individual, prohibit the trade in conflict diamonds, prevent money laundering, combat the financing of terrorism, and ensure business is conducted in an environmentally responsible manner,” says Feinberg. “We have a full-time compliance officer to oversee all global business efforts and ensure that our corporate and ethical responsible diamond standards are upheld by every company division and associate.” But Lazare Kaplan International believes that just doing no harm isn’t enough. LKI was one of the first major diamond companies to establish a cutting factory in Africa to provide training and employment to communities in diamond-producing regions. Its Okahandja factory in Namibia is staffed with highly skilled, locally trained diamond cutters, with several Namibians in managing positions. Lazare also supports the Five Rand School in Okahanjda with funds, clothing, and school supplies and supports multiple other organizations dedicated to African development and education.

b y S Y L T A N Gcelebrate youth

Jewelry brands have recently started catering to a younger demographic with hip, scaled-down jewelry collections that are more accessible and more eclectic than their regular fare. The designs are aimed at a modern generation that may be wearing jeans or simpler dresses to work. Designers are drawing on hipster elements— mixing metals, using nontraditional gems such as champagne diamonds and moonstones or incorporating boho elements such as feathers. The casualization of dressing for work has inspired jewelry designers to experiment with new looks and new materials. Designer Emily Armenta, for example, mixes oxidized sterling silver and 18k gold and has had success with items such as her horizontal black diamond bar necklace. White and champagne diamonds and white sapphires decorate an open feather wing necklace, and a bone feather charm is set with white and champagne diamonds. Stephen Webster, the British designer who introduced a rock ‘n‘ roll aesthetic into higher end jewelry, offers soft

chain bracelets and bangles, and nature-inspired earrings shaped as branches. The delicate, easy pieces allow for layering, a way of dressing that has come into fashion in recent seasons. Understanding the style and budget of her peers may be one reason Ivanka Trump’s jewelry collection also resonates with these shoppers. Her Les Petites range features whimsical pieces such as purse, lock, and shoe charms, as well as initial charms. All styles are available in 18k rose, white, and yellow gold. The pieces are perfect for shoppers just starting to build their jewelry collections. Indeed, starting one’s own collection is something more and more women are doing as they come of age. A 2012 Mintel study showed that more than 50 percent of 2,000 women interviewed purchased jewelry for themselves. It may have been De Beers who started the trend, with its campaign for the right-hand ring (“left hand is we, right hand is me”), kickstarting the belief that buying for oneself signifies independence and power.

Perhaps no brand is better poised to understand this potential than David Yurman. Having long marketed to young women of style, the company recently celebrated a 30-year anniversary with its collectible cable bracelets. Since the launch of its pavé and signet pinky rings and its Starburst collection, a whole new demographic has flocked to the label. As with the other designers catering to young millennials, the company has endeared itself to a new generation of shoppers. At a recent flagship store opening, model Selita Ebanks, DJ Mia Moretti, and Christina Hendricks of Mad Men fame could all be seen enthusiastically shopping. Piaget, a luxury jeweler established in 1874, is likewise catering to the young and hip. At a recent garden luncheon in New York City, a bevy of young celebrities — including TV personality Alexa Chung, DJs Alexandra Richards and Harley Viera-Newton, and model Hanneli Mustaparta — played with delicate bangles and Possession rings while chatting about travel plans. In creating pieces with petite diamonds and starting the pricing at just under $2,000, the brand has managed to find a new kind of success among youthful influencers.

6CANADA!oh

Alberta, Canada, is one of the best places in the world for avid skiers. The Alberta Rockies are home to numerous fantastic ski resorts that anyone can enjoy. With a ski season lasting from mid-November until mid-May (although dates can vary year-to-year), you have plenty of time to get out to the slopes. If you’re wondering where you should go, then here are some of the very best ski resorts in the province:

Nakiska Home to the Alpine events in the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics, Nakiska is the closest of these 6 resorts to the city of Calgary. This resort’s proximity to the city isn’t the only great thing about it, however, as it also home to 71 marked trails and 4 lifts. The trails provide a good balance between beginner, intermediate, and advanced, making it one of the most family-friendly resorts around.

Castle Mountain Iconic Castle Mountain, which was host to the 1975 Canada Winter Games, is located about two and a half hours outside of

Calgary. The resort is geared slightly more towards intermediate skiers, but there are plenty of trails for beginners and experts as well. Castle Mountains is particularly known for its long and steep runs, and has a skiable area that includes 2 mountains, 8 alpine bowls, 78 trails, and 6 different lifts.

Mount Norquay Just a quick drive from the town of Banff, you will find the Mount Norquay Ski Resort. Though it has the smallest skiable area of all of the resorts on this list, it is also the only one where you can buy hourly lift passes. Mount Norquay has 34 trails, 6 lifts, and a good mix of beginner, intermediate, and advanced runs. The resort also offers snowshoe trails, tubing, and fully lit nighttime skiing!

Marmot Basin Marmot Basin is the closest of these 6 ski resorts to the city of Edmonton. Located in Jasper National Park, Marmot Basin offers very well-balanced terrain and plenty of runs to try out, as there are a total of 86 trails and 7 lifts. One of the best things about the resort is that, due to its distance from Alberta’s major cities, it is usually not as crowded as the other resorts on this list.

Sunshine Village Sunshine Village is a very popular ski resort located a mere 10 minutes from Banff town. Its popularity doesn’t stem solely from its proximity to Banff, however, but also because this particular resort is home to 12 different lifts, the most in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. These lifts can bring you to a total of 126 different trails, which enjoy an annual snowfall of 360 inches!

Lake Louise With the largest skiable area in the entire Canadian Rockies, Lake Louise Ski Resort draws skiers from far and wide. It also offers 10 lifts and 139 trails, the highest of the resorts on this list. Furthermore, Lake Louise is a fantastic resort for snowboarding, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing. Located just 60 km from Banff, you can’t afford not to go if you are in the area.

The Rolex CelliniS E T T I N G A S T A N D A R D O F L U X U R Y

When people think of Rolex, they often think of the iconic sports

watches that have brought the company global recognition — the

Oyster series of chronographs, regatta timers, and record-setting

dive watches. But Rolex has another, more classical side: the Cellini.

This collection of dress watches is a contemporary interpretation of

classic watch design that combines the best of Rolex know-how and

the refinements of timeless design. The name of the collection is

inspired by Italian Renaissance artist Benvenuto Cellini, who was a

goldsmith and a sculptor to the popes. The designs pay tribute to the

clean lines and harmonious proportions of monumental architecture.

The 39mm cases in the Cellini collection are made of 18k white

or Everose gold, cast by Rolex in its own foundry. A characteristic

feature is the double bezel, domed on the inside and delicately

fluted on the outside.

Vintage features include the slightly domed caseback and the

flared shape of the screw-down crown. The dials are either lacquered

or embellished with a black or a silver-plated classic “rayon flammé

de la gloire” guilloché motif and adorned with gold applique hour

markers.

b y C A R O L B E S L E Rtime zone

Page 39: Fredric Rubel Jewelers Magazine

F R E D R I C H . R U B E L M A G A Z I N E [39

There are three models separated according to

function. Cellini Time models track hours, minutes, and

seconds. The Cellini Date includes an added date window

to the mix, in an elegant subdial. Cellini Dual Time

models feature dual time zones and a day/night indicator.

All contain high-precision automatic movements

manufactured by Rolex, and all are chronometer rated,

which means they have passed a series of tests that

guarantee the ultimate accuracy and reliability.

Nothing about the Cellini line is over-embellished or

over-sized. They are available only on alligator leather

straps in either black or brown. The dial is restricted to the

timeless codes of fine watchmaking, including elongated

Roman numerals, stretched applied hour markers, and

two-edged, sword-style hands. The minute track has been

moved closer to the inside of the dial, intersecting the

numerals at the halfway point, to make the time easy to

read. All of these elements combine to make the Rolex

Cellini the ultimate watch for daily wear.

DESIGNER HOOPS

We could give you the historical tour — how earrings have been around

for over five millennia; how it has been discovered that not less than five

different styles of silver hoop earrings adorned the ears of Canaanite

women 3,200 years ago, long before minted coins were invented; or

how even the oldest mummy uncovered was found sporting a fine pair

of studs.

We could go over the social reasoning with you, talking in depth

about the way hoops have been associated with the wearer’s status or

wealth ever since King David himself tried on the style.

Or we could set the stage for the beautiful claim that hoop earrings

have been superstitiously worn for their alleged power to change our

lives for better. Wouldn’t that be nice?

first thing hoops bring to the modern genderless mind is the fact that

they embody the adventurous spirit of the pirates (oh, so charmingly

used to wear hoops as a mark of their travels and voyages, as a

Hoops say something about us very few other

accessories know how to say: that we are adventurous and confident, as our

elegance has its own story and history. That we’ve had our firsts and remember

Body Sculpture David Yurman’s background

as a sculptor is evident in

his new collections for fall.

The new pieces express

a movement and a three-

dimensionality that few other

jewelry designers achieve. The

curves in the Belmont Curb

Link collection are an example

of the signature David Yurman knack for creating

wearable jewelry that complements the human form and

takes its inspiration from the enduring motifs of everyday

life. Inspired by David’s love of horseback riding, the new

Belmont Curb Link collection takes its inspiration and

name from the chain that runs under the horse’s chin.

Each Belmont link is sculpted and assembled by hand,

creating a fluid chain that lies comfortably flat against

the skin. These designs perfectly capture the effortless

American luxury of David Yurman.

The Petite Chatelaine collection, also new this fall, is a

scaled-down version of the Chatelaine collection, which

expresses the emotional essence of color in bold designs.

The new petite additions capture the same energy in

pieces that are made for everyday wear. Delicate cable

details create an elegant feel and a signature DY look.

This season also marks the collection’s first introduction

of slim, stackable bracelets.

Since its founding in New York in 1980, David

Yurman has become known as America’s leading fine

jewelry and timepiece brand. It features a range of

signature gold and silver designs, as well as diamond,

pearl, and gemstone jewelry.

classic time Every woman’s watch wardrobe should contain at least one classic timepiece, a go-to watch that can be worn every day, with any outfit. Our expectations for a classic day watch demand that it do dou-ble duty, taking us into the evening as well. Diamond accents, mother-of-pearl dials, and bracelets (instead of straps) make to-day’s classic watches versatile and wearable around the clock. Diamonds on an every-

day watch should be positioned as accents only — markers on the dial or set around the bezel, rather than as full pavé, as in a jewelry watch. The classic day watch should also be of the highest quality, sturdy enough to take daily wear and to remain scratch-free and fully functional for most occasions. Each of the classic watches we feature here is made in Switzerland and represents the highest quality in timepiece manufacturing.

Scotland makes a wonderful holiday destination at any time of

year, and Dumfries, a short drive west from Gretna Green and the

Scottish Borders, is a great choice both for summer holidays and

out of season breaks. The Dumfries and Galloway region is often

talked about as a whole, but it does actually cover quite a large

area, so choosing the right base from which to tour is essential.

The countryside and coast around Dumfries is spectacular, and is

a place where you can ramble amongst the hills, admire dramatic

castles, and watch migrating birds on the Solway Firth.

Directly south of Dumfries, the area bordering the River Nith’s

estuary is a very interesting place to explore. Take the B725 to

Caerlaverock to see the castle, nature reserve, and mudflats. You can

either go directly to the castle or head into the nature reserve and

park in one of the car parks marked National Nature Reserve. The

latter can be more fun as you can explore the nature reserve and then

happen upon the castle, which is well hidden by the woods.

The first signposted car park is set by a farm, and the path

eventually takes you into the heart of the nature reserve. From

here there is a reasonable length walk which approaches the castle

from the east. Stout boots or wellingtons are needed for this, and

it is not suitable for the less able, or those with prams, as you leave

the wooden boardwalks that lead into the marshes (merse on the

ordinance survey map) and follow a path across uneven boggy

ground. The network of boardwalks, however, allows easy access

out into the merse, and this is a great place to see migratory geese

in the autumn. The second car park is right on the estuary and

allows for a shorter walk through Castle Wood to the castle.

Caerlaverock Castle itself is a fantastic place to visit and has

a very colourful history. Its setting is particularly romantic, as

it is a triangle-shaped ruined castle surrounded by a moat and

framed by woodlands and pristine lawns. Do not visit without

your camera!

The opposite bank of the River Nith is dominated by Criffel,

a summit that commands fine views of the surrounding area, and

which can been seen across the Solway Firth from Cumbria. The

summit is around 570m, so it is a modest, but steep, climb.

The village of New Abbey, just north of Criffel, is a must if

you are heading in this direction. Sweetheart Abbey, a ruined

abbey which dates back to the 13th Century, sits in the centre of

the village and is looked after by Historic Scotland. You can set

off for Criffel from here. If, however, a shorter walk is the order

of the day, after half a mile or so the track branches off to the

right and you can climb up to the Waterloo Monument instead.

This is still a steep ascent, but not a lengthy one. Either summit

will give wonderful views across the Nith Estuary on a clear day.

It is great to find a location like Dumfries, where it is possible

to experience hill walking and, at the same time, enjoy coastal

scenery. The Solway Firth is an evocative place. It is easily

accessible, yet it feels remote and unspoilt. It is a great region to

explore and one that many visitors return to again and again.

for Anniversary Milestonesgifts

The big day is coming. You find yourself searching for the perfect gift, and the stress

starts to mount. But this is supposed to be a happy occasion. Trepidation probably isn’t

the ideal reaction to the realization that you and your partner are preparing to celebrate

a significant milestone in your relationship. But let’s face it, it’s often the reality. And it’s

not really a negative reaction — you are simply feeling the weight of finding just the right

expression of a very deep love for the most important person in your whole world. That’s

perfectly understandable, and it’s a good thing. All you need is a little guidance.

Our first piece of advice is to forget about the traditional milestone anniversary gifts.

While they are good as guidelines, unless you are the overly creative type, you are going

to have a near impossible task

of determining the perfect paper, tin, wood, or other material inspired gift.

Instead, the easiest thing to do is to go classic. All women love jewelry, flowers, and

romantic date nights. As Marilyn Monroe said, “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.” You

can’t go wrong taking that advice, so here are a few dazzling ideas she will always love:

anniversary ideas

First Anniversary Celebrating your first year of marriage is almost as exciting as

celebrating your tenth. You have adjusted to married life after

the honeymoon, and you have learned a whole lot about your

partner, so you want to celebrate this exciting and important

first year of your life together as a married couple. Diamond

studs are a great option. They are classic and beautiful and can

be worn every day.

Whether you are celebrating your first or fiftieth year of marriage,

the most important thing to remember is, it’s the thought that counts.

Think about her and what fits her style and personality, and she will be sure to love it.

Fifth Anniversary After 5 years of marriage, you certainly have

something to celebrate, so you want to commemorate

this exciting milestone with a gift that shows her how

much she means to you. A diamond pendant necklace

will make any woman feel loved.

Tenth Anniversary Celebrating 10 years of marriage is a big deal. You

have spent an entire decade together. While there may

have been ups and downs, you still love her as much

as the day you married her. A diamond band to add to

her engagement ring and wedding band is a great gift to

commemorate this amazing milestone.

current styles

Gold is back! The preferred metal of the disco era in all its glittering glory is back in style, particularly in shades of yellow. Designs are more modern, and in some cases more subdued, than they were in the 1980s, of course, with fewer high-polished surfaces and a greater concentration on hand-finishing. The newest way to wear gold is to don multiple pieces at once, mixing sizes, styles, colors, and textures for a look that is as individual as you are. It’s all about mixing, matching, and layering. From several dainty chains to one bold piece of yellow gold jewelry, anything goes. Here are five looks in gold jewelry that are trending right now.

Yellow gold cuff bracelet from the Golden Gate collection by Roberto Coin, constructed by hand to resemble San Francisco’s Golden Gate bridge.

1Yellow goldSoft yellow gold is the ultimate feminine jewelry statement, classic and timeless. It works with vintage styles and dresses, which is important for bridal wear, because vintage-themed weddings are in style right now. Yellow gold can, at tmies be more subtle than other gold hues. And because yellow is nature’s choice for gold, it has an authentic quality that just feels right. Given a high polish, yellow gold glitters beautifly, and is dominating red carpet fashion this fall.

Stacks and layersThe hottest look in jewelry right now is to stack multiple rings or bangles or layers of necklaces. Layering gold pieces in a variety of textures, finishes, colors, sizes, and gemstone accents is a great way to create a look that is a true expression of individual style. The same pieces can be used to change your look on a daily basis, depending on what you’re wearing. This is your chance to be creative and go from bling to delicate or anywhere in between.

Roberto Coin and Kwiat diamond bangles combine to make a beautiful layered look.

3Links Large-linked gold bracelets and necklaces are part of the comeback to big looks in gold. Links are one of the most versatile elements in jewelry, because they can be made in so many different sizes, shapes, and finishes. There is a trend toward square, rectangular, and irregular-shaped links. Hand finishing is important because links are larger, and a bit of texture offers an alternative to a high polish, which is very bold. Fortunately, the bigger sized links also leave lots of room for setting diamond accents.

Mixed colorsThe three most common colors of gold — white, rose, and yellow — are all equally popular right now. You probably already have jewelry and watches in your wardrobe in all three colors, and now it’s acceptable to wear them together. This year, designers are including all three colors in the same pieces or in one collection, with designs that are meant to be mixed together in stacks or layers.

Two bracelets by Roberto Coin, the rose gold and mother-of-pearl bracelet is from the Primavera collection and the white gold and diamond bracelet is from the Classic Diamond collection.

5Open spacesOpen-worked pieces have been popular for a couple of years but are now especially important as the trend moves toward larger, often hollow pieces that might be uncomfortably heavy if they were solid. The latest variation on this concept is to design the open spaces with an architectural feel. The Roberto Coin and Ivanka Trump pieces here are inspired by iconic architectural styles in Paris, New York, and San Francisco.
