Matt Bellassai*Matt Bellassai is a writer, stand-up comedian, and winner of the 2016 People’s Choice Award for Favorite Social Media
Star. After the success of his BuzzFeed web series, “Whine About It,” Matt embarked on a solo stand-up career, performing to sold-out audiences around the United States and at least one disastrous not-sold-out audience at a casino in Palm Springs, California. He is the host and producer of his new solo web series, “To Be Honest,” and anchor of the forthcoming podcast, “Unhappy Hour.”
Gwenda BondGwenda writes young adult and children’s books. Her work includes the Lois Lane series which brings the iconic comic book char-

Fred HerschJazz pianist, composer, activist, and educator Fred Hersch is a ten-time Grammy nominee and the recipient of a 2003 Guggenheim
Fellowship in Composition. He was named a 2016 Doris Duke Artist and has twice been awarded Jazz Pianist of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association. He concertizes worldwide as a solo artist, as a collaborator, and with the Fred Hersch Trio. He was a longtime member of the Jazz Studies faculty of the New England Conservatory and now teaches at Rutgers University.

Kate DiCamillo* Kate DiCamillo was born in Phila-delphia, Pennsylvania, raised in Clermont, Florida, and currently lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She writes for both children and adults and likes to think of herself as a storyteller. Here are a few more facts about Kate: She is short. And loud. She hates to cook and loves to eat. She is single and childless, but has lots of friends and is an

Gretchen Carlson* Gretchen Carlson is one of the nation’s most successful and recognized news anchors and a tireless advocate for female empowerment. Since making the decision to speak up against sexual harassment, she sparked an international con-versation about the pervasiveness of the problem and, in doing so, discovered that every woman has a story. This past year, Carlson graced the covers of both Time and Good Housekeeping magazines and is a marquee columnist for Time’s Motto.
Will HillenbrandWill Hillenbrand is a celebrated author and illustrator whose published works include over 60 books
for young readers. In addition to his own self-illustrated titles, he has illustrated the works of writers and retellers includ-ing Verna Aardema, Judy Sierra, Margery Cuyler, Judith St. George, Phyllis Root, Jane Yolen, Karma Wilson, Maureen Wright, Daniel Pinkwater, Olivier Dunrea and Jane Hillenbrand. Will has lived almost all of his life in Cincinnati.
Lydia KangLydia Kang is an author of young adult fiction, poetry, and narrative non-fiction. She is a practicing physician who gained a
reputation for helping fellow writers achieve medical accuracy in fiction. Her poetry and non-fiction have been published in JAMA, The Annals of Internal Medicine, Canadian Medical Association Journal, Journal of General Internal Medicine, and Great Weather for Media. She believes in science and knocking on wood, and currently lives and practices in Omaha.
Loren LongLoren Long is the author and illustrator of the New York Times bestselling picture books Otis, Otis

Rafael LópezRafael López is an internationally recognized illustrator and artist. He won the 2016 Pura Belpré medal
from the American Library Association for his illustrations for Drum Dream Girl and the 2010 Pura Belpré medal for Book Fiesta. In 2012, he was selected by the Library of Congress to create the National Book Festival poster. He has been awarded the 2017 Tomás Rivera Children’s Book Award, three Pura Belpré honors and two Américas Book Awards.
Mike LoweryMike Lowery is the author and illustrator of the Doodle Adventures series. His artwork has appeared in everything from greet-
ing cards to children’s books—and Workman’s Kid’s Awesome Activity Calendar. He lives in Atlanta, Georgia, with his wife and daughter, where he also co-runs Paper Ghost Studio.

Brian Alexander An award-winning journalist, Brian Alexander has written about American culture for decades. He is a two-time finalist for the National Magazine Award. He has also been recognized by Medill School of Journalism’s John Bartlow Martin awards for public interest journalism, the Association of
Healthcare Journalists, and other organizations. He grew up in Lancaster, where his family’s history is entwined with Anchor-Hocking.
Lauren Oliver Lauren Oliver is the New York Times bestselling author of the YA novels Replica, Vanishing Girls, Panic, and the Delirium trilogy. Before I Fall is now a major motion picture and opened in theaters in March, 2017. The sequel to Replica, Ringer, is her most recent novel and will be released in October. Lauren’s novels for middle grade readers include The Spindlers, Liesl & Po, and the Curiosity House series, co-written with H. C. Chester. She has written one novel for adults, Rooms. She divides her time between New York, Connecticut, and a variety of airport lounges.
Stephanie Powell Watts Stephanie Powell Watts is an associate professor of English at Lehigh University, and has won numerous awards, including a Whiting Award, a Pushcart Prize, and the Southern Women’s Writ-ers Award for Emerging Writer of the Year. Her debut novel, No One is Coming to Save Us was the In-augural selection by Sarah Jessica Parker for the American Library As-sociation’s Book Club Central and was named one the best books of 2017 by Entertainment Weekly, W Magazine, and The Chicago Review of Books.

Susannah MaynardSusannah Maynard is a lifelong animal lover, animal rescue advocate, and pet photographer. She has spent the last several
years honing her skills as a pet photog-rapher by photographing hundreds of rescue and client pets. When not out photographing other people’s pets or donating her time to rescue organiza-tions or other pet charities, Susannah spends time with her own pet family of rescue dogs and a rescue cat.
Stepfanie RomineStepfanie Romine is a journalist turned plant-based recipe developer, health coach and yoga teacher who writes about
natural health and wellness. She lives outside of Asheville, N.C., with her husband and their three cats. During Romine’s six years in Cincinnati, she worked as a copy editor and business reporter at the Enquirer. She also spent several years with SparkPeople.com, where she co-authored The SparkPeople Cookbook and The Spark Solution.
Douglas SmithDouglas Smith is an award-winning historian and translator and the author of Rasputin, Former People, and
other books on Russia. Before becoming a historian, he worked for the U.S. State Department in the Soviet Union and as a Russian affairs analyst for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty in Munich. He lives in Seattle with his wife and two children. Mr. Smith’s appearance at Books by the Banks is sponsored by the Havi-ghurst Center for Russian and Post-Soviet Studies at Miami University.
Louis Stokes Louis Stokes was raised in Cleveland’s projects, the son of a single mother who lost her husband when Louis was three. He was also the
brother of former Cleveland mayor, Carl Stokes, who, before being elected as Cleveland’s first African American mayor, was elected as the first African Ameri-can Democrat in the state legislature. Louis Stokes died at the age of ninety very shortly after finishing this autobi-ography. Angela Stokes, daughter of the Honorable Congressman, will represent her father at Books by the Banks.
Jessica StrawserBy day, Jessica Strawser is the Editorial Director of Writer’s Digest, where she has penned interviews with such luminaries as David
Sedaris, Alice Walker and Anne Tyler. By night, she is a writer with a debut novel, Almost Missed You (named to Barnes & Noble’s March shortlist of “Best New Fiction” and PopSugar’s “Best Spring Reads”), another novel to follow in 2018, and bylines in such fine venues as The New York Times Modern Love. And by the minute, the OU alum is a proud wife and mom of two in Cincinnati.

Ben Clanton Ben Clanton is the authorstrator of the Narwhal and Jelly early graphic novel series as well as many picture books including It Came in the Mail, Vote for Me!, and Boo Who. He also is an editor-at-large for the Little Bigfoot Imprint of Sasquatch Books. Ben lives in Tacoma, Washington with his wife, son and goldendoodle pup.
Chris Grabenstein Chris Grabenstein is the author of the New York Times bestsellers Welcome to Wonderland: Home Sweet Motel, The Island of Dr. Libris, Escape from Mr. Lemoncel-lo’s Library, and Mr. Lemoncello’s Library Olympics. Alan Drew Alan Drew is the author of the literary thriller, Shadow Man, which was published in 2017. He is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where he was awarded a Teaching/Writing Fel-
lowship. An Associate Professor of English at Villanova University where he directs the creative writing program, he lives near Philadelphia with his wife and two children.
