Every year the Johnson County Library adds hundreds of new books to its collection. These aren’t free: the money from county property taxes, 1% tax requests and assorted state funds pays for most. But families have also set up memorial funds in honor of a loved on who enjoyed our library for years. These funds help us add extra books beyond those paid for with local taxfunds.

One of those very important funds is the Wanda

Thanks to all our guests, donors and sponsors who made Nov. 1 such a success! Let’s Build It drew about 200 attendees for a fantastic evening of food, drink, and music. Many excellent items, including dinners at local establishments and gift certificates for artisan classes, were auctioned.

Johnson County Library Foundation

The foundation was created in 1976 by patrons who saw the need to ensure the future of the library. Through donations, memorials and fund-raising, these volunteers have successfully supported special needs of the library & established a permanent endowment.

It's been a busy couple of weeks at the Kaycee Branch Library. We celebrated "Teen Read Week" October 15 -19. The teens received incentives for checking out books during the week. Teens were also asked to guess how many shredded paperbacks were in the jug. Wesley Gosney was our winner.

We had a Halloween celebration during our October 29 Story Hour. There were books, finger plays, a craft and snacks. Many of the little ones came in costume.

Our latest book discussion was about Beautiful Jim Key by Mim Eichler Rivas. Many of the participants enjoyed the parts about the horse, but found several parts of the book to be a little dry. Some even questioned if it was factual. The next book discussion will be about Truman Capote's A Christmas Memory. This is a short story. The discussion will be held January 6 at 7 p.m. here at the library. Anyone may join us.

Now we are gearing up for our Winter Reading program, "It's the Season for Reading". This will be held Dec. 1, 2013 through Jan. 31, 2014.

Patrons who checkout books during this time are eligible to put their name in the drawing for one of four baskets— Preschool - first grade: Llama Llama Basket Second grade - fifth grade: I Spy Basket Teens: Book, T-shirt, & Goodie Basket Adults: Book & $50 Winchester's Gift Card

Your library is free to use — we only need a form of photo identification and a proof of mailing address (like a piece of mail) to get you a library card. No overdue fines!

Hill memorial, named for a library supporter and book lover who moved to Buffalo from Texas several years ago. She was also a member of the Friends of the library. Her children and sister contribute to the memorial fund around every Christmas.

The Johnson County Library’s second Winter Reading Program, “Books are SNOW Wonderful,” will kick off Monday, Jan. 20.

The program lasts until Friday, March 21. Reading slips can be de-posited to enter a drawing for prizes in five reading groups: Preschool to K; Grades 1 to 3; Grades 4 to 5; Teens; and Adults. Baskets of prizes — funded by the Friends of the Library — will be awarded for each group during our grand prize drawing to be held on Friday, March 21.

Winter Reading in forecast for January

Computer classes starting soon Johnson County Library staff will start up computer assistance classes in

January. Possible topics covered will include e-reader (Kindle & Nook) use, tablet devices, e-mail, and Microsoft Office, plus databases offered by the Wyoming State Library. Contact Megan Herold or Steve Rzasa at (307) 684-5546 for more information.
