Human trafficking in Waushara County When most people think of “Human Trafficking” they think of slavery, auction blocks, bid-ding wars and people being brought to a foreign country against their will. Unfortunately, Human Trafficking has a mod-ern twist and is happening here in Wisconsin and those of us living in rural areas near a main highway thoroughfare are even more at risk. Some rough estimates of the scope of the problem: •$32 billion dollar business-second only to drug trade-and usually intertwined. •Average ageof a traffickedchild is between 8-14 years. •Halfofallsextradevictimsare children. •50percentarerunawaychil-drenand50percentofthosearemales. •In the U.S. 18,000-20,000women and children are traf-ficked annually, plus thousands of men. Rural areas with a lot of pov-erty are at high risk for human trafficking due to desperation in families, drug use and abuse, false promises of dealers that leads to young people being duped, tricked and preyed upon. The use of alcohol is decreas-ing among teens in Wisconsin, but the use of marijuana, pre-scription pain killers and heroin are on the rise. Once a person is addicted to any substance,
they are even more vulnerable to trafficking or being used as a sex slave because they will doanythingtoget theirnextfixofthe drug. As of July 2014, Wisconsinhas passed state laws to pro-tect victims, and 43 traffickerswere incarcerated in Wisconsin. Local communities are estab-lishing Task Forces to address the problem. Waushara County is more at risk for human trafficking due to Interstate39onthewestendandHighway 41 east. The citizens of Waushara County are invited to a Family & Community Town Supper to learn more about this problem on April 18 at Grace UnitedMethodist Church, Wautoma, from 6-8 p.m.
A light meal will be servedand a panel of experts willshare their knowledge with us. Participants must register, but it is free of charge. For more information and to register, con-tactHumanServicesat920-787-6600.

Pleasant Lake resident brings happiness to children of all agesA child’s eyes often sparkle as they receive
their first American Girl Doll. To a little girl, the dolls are special and often become one of their most cherished possessions. This is where June Millard, Pleasant Lake, can become your daughter or granddaughters first seamstress.
June’s Stitches & Time Doll Clothes features clothing for 18-inch dolls in an array of styles and colors. Whether a child is looking for a beautiful dress for her doll or a dance outfit that resembles her own, June will most likely have what they are looking for.
The story of how June began making doll clothes is similar to an American Girl Story, with ups and downs and lessons learned. “I am originally from Virginia but moved to Wisconsin with my husband, Irving,” said June. “My husband loved the hunting and fishing and had family here, so we moved, originally we lived in Milwaukee.”
Her sister, Jerryann Hall, a teacher who loved to attend craft shows, initially enlisted the help of June when she needed to prepare for the shows she attended.
“She sewed all different kinds of items, Amish
dolls, stuffed pigs, cows, rabbits, and cats. She was a school teacher and so she asked me to help her make the bodies and send them to her in Virginia, so she could get items complete for the craft shows,” she said.
While raising her boys, June never thought about making doll clothes until her mother, DeMarcy Payne, made the suggestion. “I had never sewed for girls and sewing was something I
loved to do,” she said. “She encouraged me every time we talked on the phone.”
Soon after Jerryann came to visit her sister the two decided to attend a craft show together at the State Fair Park in West Allis. “It was the first time that I had sold my doll clothes. The amount of people who were interested and bought my items was incredible,” she said. “It was my first experience and I loved it.”
Having spent time working and perfecting her doll clothes, June entered the Marquette County Fair Home Community Education (HCE) competition with doll clothes she made completely from recycled items in 2015. She took home a first place blue ribbon at the county level as well as at the Wisconsin State Fair.
Most recently, June offers her clients mix and match outfits. This collection features five or six different pieces of the same color scheme, allowing the child to intermingle the pieces to make several different outfits by combining leggings, a skirt, top, and other pieces. The clothes are interchangeable and can lead to hours of fun changing the look of the doll by simply changing one piece.
With an understanding that many girls feel it is important of accessorize, June leaves no detail out, including headbands, underclothes, scarves, purses, tights, jackets, ponchos, shoes, and sandals. She also offers parents and grandparents the opportunity to help put a smile on a young girls’ face by giving the gift of matching pajamas.
“I have several different sizes where there are matching pajamas for both the doll and the girl,”
said June. “It makes them feel special to dress their doll the same as themselves.”
While living in Milwaukee, June was lucky to have help from her husband who was always willing to help her set up on the weekends, including loading the trailer with all of her items to sell. In 1995, the couple moved to their home on Pleasant Lake and worked at rebuilding the house into what it is today.
June has her own work area, filled with fabric, notions and other items that can be transformed into doll clothes.
When you enter June’s workshop it is like entering a land of little girl’s dreams. If her 30-year-old Pfaff sewing machine could talk, it would tell stories of girls now grown who bring their own little girls to get clothes for their dolls.
“I will be 79 this year and I still love making the clothes and going to the craft shows,” she said. “Nothing beats seeing the happiness on a girls face when she chooses clothes for her doll.”
“Since my husband passed away I haven’t been able to load up as much or go as far for craft fairs, but I enjoy going to the Coloma Area Historical Society (CAHS) Flea Market every month and the Taste and Tour at Thal’s
Acres every year,” she added. Not only can customers see June’s items on
display at the CAHS Flea Market, they can also arrange to view her items at her house, and she will create special order items upon request. “The flea market allows the young girls to peruse the clothes with their mom or grandma and choose exactly what they want,” added June. “It’s often amazing to see how much thought a little girl puts in to what clothes she will choose for her doll.”
“I love the way a child’s face lights up when they find that perfect outfit for their doll,” she added. “Often it is not at all what the parent would have thought they would have chosen.”
To learn more about Stitches & Time Doll Clothes or to to make a special appointment, please call June at 608-296-1469 or email [email protected]. June will also have a booth at the CAHS Craft & Flea Markets the first Saturday of every month this summer at the Coloma Community Park. June Millard, Pleasant Lake, works on a new outfit in her
workshop. “I will be 79 this year and I still love making clothes and going to craft shows,” she said.
by Deb Sadowski
June’s mix and match doll clothes allow for a variety of styles from just a few doll clothes pieces.
June took home first place at the Marquette County Fair and the Wisconsin State Fair for her doll dress made
from recycled items.
June Millard, Pleasant Lake, creates a variety of doll clothes in many styles. June’s Stitches & Time Doll Clothes can be found at the Coloma Area Historical Society Craft & Flea Markets the first Saturday of every month this summer at the Coloma
Community Park. “I love the way a child’s face lights up when they find the perfect outfit for their doll,” she said.
