The Huerto Project will allow impoverished

people in Murcia to have access to locally grown,

organic vegetables. We will cultivate land which

belongs to a local environmental association and the

harvest will be donated to charities and those in

need.

About the Land and the Project

➲ The land in the area was terraced by the Moors in the 9th

century and had been left uncultivated for many years.

➲ The farming at the association is all organic and there is an

open plot of uncultivated land for us to use for the Huerto

Project.

➲ The association is 100% environmentally sustainable and

uses windmills, a natural spring , and reservoirs for energy

and water.

➲ We plan to introduce many indigenous plants to the

cultivated land alongside the fruit and vegetables, helping

to conserve biodiversity in the area.

➲ The project will also provide the opportunity for volunteers

to learn about organic farming and its environmental and

health benefits.

Here are the first

irrigation pipes going in at the

farm and an organic

cucumber, just one of the

many vegetables that will

grow on the plot.

in water conserving straw covered beds.

In addition to the

environmental and

nutritional benefits,

many people feel that

organic vegetables like

these taste better.

The farming technique

will aim to enhance

the local ecosystem,

enrich the soil,

conserve water and

produce a variety of

high quality

vegetables

with natural manure.

We will bring our vegetable harvest to local food banks that are currently feeding people in need in Murcia. The three local organizations pictured below have been pre-approved for this project.
