Welcome!Well, there’s no doubt that we are “in season” – Mardi Gras season, that is.You can’t escape the purple and gold, news of fancy balls and other soirees and the

abundance of red beans and rice, beads, moon pies and, of course, King Cakes. We list many of the events and parades in this edition to help you make a plan. Many

of the area business and tourist groups are putting out a welcome mat for Snowbirds with dance parties, tours, expos and other events. Be sure to check out our clubs and calendar pages.

We’ve been out shooting our Snaps and they return to this edition. We love seeing your faces and getting feedback from you. I’ve been publishing this magazine since 2006 and it’s nice when new people discover us and tell us how much they enjoy it. Thank you for that. This month we will be at the big Alabama Lifestyles Expo in Orange Beach, Ala. There are a variety of businesses showcased at this event but also 20-plus communities around Alabama on-site to get to know. Be sure to come by our booth and say hello.

Our Canadian cover couple, Timi and Tom Millar hail from Winnipeg, Manitoba, and since they spend five months here, they are considered part-time locals. The duo not only works in a bit of golf but also generously gives their time volunteering with the clubs and other organizations.

Speaking of clubs, this month there are numerous fun events that also serve as fundraisers for area organizations. In Alabama, tens of thousands of dollars are raised at the annual Brat Fest, Trivia Night, Pancake Breakfast, Low Country Boil and 8-Pin Bowling Tournament that are supported by the 10-plus state clubs. There are golf fundraisers too in Alabama and Northwest Florida and several others.

Snowbird-led theater and musical groups are profiled in this edition and they, too, give back to local organizations.

The best advice for enjoying your winter stay in one of our communities is to get involved and you can’t help but make friends. Isn’t that what it’s all about?

As always, let me know if I can help in any way. Best,Karen Your Publisher,Karen Harrell, [email protected]

Small-town Florida isn’t our theme. It isn’t a look, a style or a gimmick. Outside the fudge counter, the sidewalk leads to the river and the river flows to the beach, the zoo and the biggest fishing pier around. Call it the Canoe Capital of Florida. Call it Gulf Islands National Seashore. We call it home, and we’re willing to share.

Canadian Snowbirds Timi Millar and her husband, Tom, of Winnipeg, Manitoba met more than 25 years ago while competing in the sport of Curling.

Not sure what that is? The sport is sometimes called “chess on ice” and involves polished granite stones, called rocks. Two teams of four players take turns sliding the rocks across the ice curling sheet toward the house, a circular target marked on the ice. Each team has eight stones.

The couple has contemplated bringing their equipment with them on their next trip south to introduce the sport to locals at the ice rink at Sandestin’s Village at Baytowne Wharf.

But, chances are with their busy schedule, time on the ice might be hard to find.

The Millars are part-time locals spending five months on the Emerald Coast of Florida each year. And, they are among the most active contributors in area Snowbird clubs.

Timi has served previously as the president of the Destin Snowbird Club and is currently the 2nd Vice President of the Walton County Snowbird Club. Tom works behind the scenes but is just as active as his wife. They both are active golfers and Timi also volunteers with the Friends Guild of the Destin Library.

“We volunteer because it is our way of giving back,” said Timi who shared that she and Tom were a “team” in their volunteer pursuits.

The couple are “Life Members” of the Destin Snowbird Club and if the board progression continues, Timi will be president of the 2000+ member Walton

Snowbird Club in a couple of years. Tom had a 35 year career as a

draftsman with the Department of Natural Resources while Timi has “retired” from the field of dental hygiene, but continues to work as a dental receptionist during the non-Florida months.

“We first visited in 1988 when Tom’s parents were wintering here and simply fell in love with the area,” Timi said. “What keeps us coming back is the friends we have made, those beautiful beaches and the fact that any day can be a good day for golf. This year is our 27th trip to what has become ‘home.”

The couple recommends joining a Snowbird club as one of the best ways to meet people, find activities and enjoy your winter stay.

They’ve traveled many different routes but say that the Emerald Coast is their “very favorite place.”

Todd (Elvis) is In The House!Todd Allen Herendeen  Indiana native and popular tribute (Elvis and others) artist Todd Allen Herendeen is a well-known musician in the Panama City Beach area. Herendeen regularly performs this winter at the Boardwalk Beach Resort and select dates at Gulf World Marine Park and other locations. This March he will take to the road in central Florida. We took the opportunity to ask him a few questions.

Q. What is your background in music?A. I am self-taught in music. I don’t have any kind of musical background. I didn’t even realize I could sing until 1995 and that was a fluke then. It started as a talent show joke. Then I got the singing bug :)

Q. This year you are performing at several venues from Destin to Panama City Beach to Apalachicola to farther south into central Florida. Most of these are Tribute shows and most are performed for our Snowbirds. Tell us about that experience.

A. I love the Snowbirds or Winter Residents! They come south to get out of the cold and are so appreciative of our show! We perform the music they grew up with so it takes them back to a great time in their life. Makes them feel young again! Brings out the young that is still in them!

Q. I see you also have a revival show coming up. Can you tell us about that?

A. We have a program we call “God and Country.” We hold it under our huge red, white and blue tent. We sing all gospel and patriotic music and we honor each and every veteran or current service member with a beautiful certificate “For Serving One Nation Under God.” A thank you for their service! People who attend absolutely love it and it is gaining great momentum.

Q. Finally, I see that your fans have a chance to cruise with you next year. Tell us about that experience. A. Yes we are doing a 2016 cruise Jan 23-28, 2016 to Grand Cayman and Cozumel aboard the Carnival Paradise! My band and I will be performing three shows during the cruise. One day we will perform our Tribute to the Legends Show, another day we will perform our Elvis show and another day we will perform our God and Country show. We also hold a special meet and greet VIP party for all of our sign ups. We have a great time vacationing together! To learn more check out his website at www.toddallenherendeen.com.

When it comes to beach communities along the Florida Panhandle it is often hard to tell where one county begins and another one ends.

Tucked on the western edge of Panama City Beach (Bay County) and east of the string of beach communities in Walton County/30A, near Phillips Inlet lies a state park jewel.

Camp Helen is bordered by the Gulf of Mexico on three sides and Lake Powell, a rare freshwater coastal dune lake. Camp Helen started in 1928 as a 185-acre private family retreat and later a resort destination for Alabama-based Avondale Textile Mills employees and in 1996 became part of the expansive Florida State Parks.

While the Florida State Parks system handles staffing and maintenance, the park also needs volunteers and donations to bring programs and services to the public. In 2014 the Friends of Camp Helen State Park launched the Americana Music at the Lodge, a free six-concert singer-songwriter-style series music created to help serve and engage the winter visitor crowd.

There are three concerts this winter including Feb. 7 – The New 76ers, Feb. 21 Granville Automatic and March 7 – Scott & Michelle Dalziel. Donations are encouraged and guests are served complimentary drinks and snacks. The concerts saw immediate success with regular attendance of more than 200 people.

Sasha Craft, park manager, said the park normally is only open in the daytime and experiencing the grounds and the lodge at night is a special treat. The Friends of Camp Helen has a special Snowbird membership rate of $10. Craft said the concert series has helped bring in new members, volunteers and daytime visitors who express that they had no idea the hidden gem existed.

Migrating from many cold-weather states, Snowbirds with a penchant for the arts invite everyone to attend this winter’s Gulf Coast performances of acting and signing.

Fluffing their feathers The 18th annual snowbird production at South Baldwin Community Theatre in Gulf Shores presents Neil Simon’s “Sunshine Boys.” Show dates are Feb. 11-15 and 18-22. Curtain times are 7:30 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday; Sunday matinees are 2 p.m. Tickets cost $15. Purchase tickets between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday through Friday at the South Baldwin Community Theatre Box Office, 2022 W. 2nd St., Gulf Shores, Ala. You can also purchase tickets online at www.sbct.biz. “The South Baldwin Community Theatre has always welcomed the Snowbirds, retired people escaping the winter weather up north, for the last 18 years,” says Carol Bitzer of Indiana, who assists with public relations and other tasks for the annual theatrical venture.

“We love to keep busy during our stay in Alabama, and the theatre is a great place to do that,” Bitzer says. “Our volunteers come from Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, South Dakota and North Dakota. “Many have had experiences in their hometown community theaters,” Bitzer says. “ Others give their time in set construction, painting, lights, sound, publicity, ticketing and hosting.” Hailing from Michigan, Gene Beach directs this year’s all-snowbird cast. Beach says “The Sunshine Boys” is presented through special arrangements with Samuel French Inc. Al Lewis and Willie Clark were top-billed vaudevillians for over 40 years, and now they aren’t even speaking. When CBS requests Lewis and Clark to perform for a “History of Comedy” retrospective, a grudging reunion brings the two back together, along with a flood of memories, miseries and laughs. Beach, a seasoned director, is assisted by Rosemary Brown, who has performed in 12 of the snowbird plays and assisted the director in four. Leading actors are Leigh Sherman as

Flocks of talent entertain in February

Willie Clark, Dennis Bohac as Al Lewis, and Gordy Halloran as Ben Silverman. Minor parts are played by Tom Kennelly as the patient, Larry Rebert as Eddie, Elaine Kennelly as the nurse and Marcia Forrester as the RN. The cast and crew put in hundreds of hours in rehearsals. “These actors are very committed and do this every year without understudies,” Beach says. Don’t wait to get a ticket because snowbird shows are always sold out, usually in the first couple of days after going on sale, Bitzer says. “At $15 per ticket, this is the best entertainment in the area” says snowbird George Robson of Michigan. The proceeds, which are normally more than $16,000 each year, are donated back to the South Baldwin Community Theatre, Bitzer says. For more information, call the Box Office at (251) 968-6721.

Songbirds Harpist Katie Ott’s voice bubbles with excitement as she chats about the upcoming Walton County Snowbird Singers Concert. The hour-long event is 4 p.m. Feb. 13 at Santa Rosa Beach Community Church, 3524 U.S. 98. “The group is made up of about 50 singers that come from all over the United States and Canada,” Ott says. “They come late December and early January and start rehearsal soon after to put on a program for the community. Some are retired music

performers and educators or people who have enjoyed singing at church.” Director of the Snowbirds’ concert for three years, Ott is principal harpist with the Mobile Symphony Orchestra/Alabama, Pensacola Symphony Orchestra and Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra/Mississippi, as well as with the Mobile Opera and Pensacola Opera. Walton County Snowbird Singers concerts always treat the audience to a wonderful variety of music, Ott says. “Highlights from the concert will include music of the Beatles, ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow,’ ‘You Raise Me Up’ and even some gospel music,” she says. “My personal favorite on the program is ‘I Bought Me a Cat’ written by American composer Aaron Copland. This year marks 115 years from his birthday, so we thought it would be great to sing one of his works. “The concert will also feature flutist Robin Horne and some fantastic flute and harp duets,” Ott says. “We will perform works by Ibert, Hasselmans and everyone’s favorite, Clair de Lune by Debussy. “It is truly a treat for me to play with Robin and the combination of harp and flute is just heavenly,” Ott says. The concert is free, but “love offerings” for a local charity will be collected. “The singers don’t expect our community to cater to them, they give a lot back to the community,” Ott says. “We are giving to Caring & Sharing this year.” Caring & Sharing of South Walton is a non-profit organization that provides food and monetary support to families in the local community. This goal is achieved through donations and selling of donated goods. For more information, call Ott at (850) 687-0730.

Tens of thousands of Snowbirds pass through the state of Alabama each year on their way to the Gulf Coast.

Many are from the Midwest, some are Canadians, while others are from the Northeast corridor and buck the I-95 trend to land on the Gulf Coast.

But all have the opportunity to find hidden treasures - if they take the time to enjoy the journey in their quest to get to and from their destination.

The Alabama Lifestyles Expo is one of the best ways to discover more about what lies beyond the state’s interstates. Staged from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. Feb. 5 at the Caribe Resort in Orange Beach, the free event features 50+ vendors representing a variety of products and services, including more than 20 Alabama communities scattered throughout the state. There will be an additional question and answer session at 8 a.m. Feb. 6 at The Caribe for people who want more time with the community representatives.

Teresa Todd represents the Athens (Ala.) Chamber of Commerce. A small community tucked in Alabama’s northwest corridor less than an hour from the Tennessee line and a mere 20-minute drive to the bustling high-tech community of Huntsville, world-renowned for its NASA Redstone Arsenal Space and Rocket Center.

But what Todd wants you to know is her Limestone County community boasts the natural resources such as rivers and trails, historic buildings, small mom and pop restaurants and specialty stores (goat cheese creamery anyone?) that modern-day Snowbirds often seek.

“Seniors today are not really seniors just a little bit older juniors,” said Todd who shared that some hotels now offer “Snowbird” rates. “They don’t act it and they don’t look it. They are healthier now and they want to keep that up.”

Longtime Expo director Bill Meadows said many Snowbirds also are looking for a place to retire full-time or maybe to start a small business.

“Many Snowbirds are looking to downsize and maybe utilize their special skills,” Meadows said. “Alabama has very low taxes and is very affordable to live.”

One of the best ways to find out more is to visit the Expo so you can talk to the community representatives but more information also is available at the state website: www.alabamaadvantage.com.

The history of the Eglin Golf Course, located in Niceville, Fla., goes back to the 1920s when the original course was built by a Chicago businessman, who used it as a place to entertain his Chicago gangster friends in a warmer climate.

Fact or fiction?“There’s probably some myth and some truth that gangsters were down here,” says

Derek Turner, Eglin Golf Course General Manager. “What we found is the names associated with Al Capone.”

Now, we assume, the only ones who comes down from Chicago and other northern places during the winter are Snowbirds … and that’s not a gang name.

Eglin Golf Course now has two 18-hole courses, the Eagle and the Falcon. It is part of the Florida Historic Golf Trail, a collection of more than 50 golf courses from

Pensacola to Key West.It includes public, semi-private, military and resort golf courses. Most of these historic golf

courses were built during the “Golden Age” of golf course architecture from the early teens through the late 1930s.

The website provides historical background on all the courses. In 1949, the Chicago businessman sold the course to the government and the course was

renovated and re-established as an 18-hole course near what is now known as Eglin Air Force Base. The Falcon course is the more challenging of the two courses. “Both courses have a real scenic beauty,” Turner said. “The landscape is unique. It’s

not flat with lots of palmettos. It’s one of the hilliest spots in Florida. From tee to green it undulates.”

The Falcon is not real conducive to walking. However, the Eagle course is more recreational for those who don’t have as good a game.

Turner says they are trying to “tame” the Falcon course. Some tee boxes have been moved forward and they have trimmed back some areas where nature took over during the years.

Still, there’s a lot of wildlife on the course, from deer to coyotes, to wild boar to an occasional bear.

“People are always amazed at the layout here,” Turner said. “There’s a lot of pitch and roll here. We enjoy having the Snowbirds come here and play.”

Eglin Golf Course is one of six of the golf courses in Northwest Florida as part of the Florida Historic Golf Trail. Other nearby courses included are also military, including A.C. Read Golf Course at Naval Air Station Pensacola and Whiting Field Golf Course in Milton.

The trail was launched in 2014 by the Florida Department of State.According to VISIT FLORIDA, there are nearly 1,300 golf facilities in the state, which

employs more than 167,000 workers and generates $13.8 billion in economic impact.Golf legends Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer joined the Florida Department of State in

introducing the trail last year.“One of the wonderful aspects of the game of golf is its rich traditions,” Nicklaus said last year.

“As a proud Floridian for close to 50 years, I know the state of Florida has its own storied history in our game. … The Florida Historic golf Trail includes important chapters to our golf story.”

The massive kiln can hold up to 800 pieces at a time, requires round-the-clock monitoring and takes about a week to cool. In the interim years a variety of artists – including many renowned artists and instructors – have participated in the annual kiln walk event. Visitors are encouraged to visit in the weeks leading up to the main event where they can talk to many of the artists helping monitor the kiln. The pottery will be for sale after the kiln is unloaded. The founding Stokes family operates a gallery and workshop next door at Holley Hill Pottery. Canada’s Betsy Ross

Known as the “Betsy Ross” of Canada, Joan O’Malley knew 2015 was going to be a busy year for her and husband, Brian.

The couple, who hail from Ottawa, are Panama City Beach, Fla., Snowbirds where they lead the annual flag procession into the annual Canada Day. This year the celebration is set for Feb. 15 – the 50th anniversary of the unveiling of the official “Maple Leaf”-designed national flag familiar around the world.

“I’m so excited that the (Canada Day) party is the actual anniversary,” O’Malley said. “It’s just perfect.”

Fifty years ago there was heated debate about the need for a national flag. O’Malley was just 20 years old and a newlywed when she got an urgent request from her beloved father, Ken Donovan who worked in Department of Trade and Commerce. The new minority-party Prime Minister, Lester Pearson, had promised a national flag, if elected as a symbol of unity and three designs where approved.

More than 6000 designs were submitted and after 300 debates in Commons, the choices were narrowed down to three. Donovan enlisted his daughter, an amateur seamstress, in a desperate late-night phone call to sew the three designs for Pearson to unveil at Parliament.

The rest, as they say, is history. O’Malley will proudly carry the flag into this year’s celebration followed by representatives

of Canada’s 10 provinces, three territories and the United States. Tickets for the event are $22 and include dinner, dancing and door prices. They will be available in a one-day sale 9 a.m. – Noon Feb. 4 at Bay Point Resort, 4114 Jan Cooley Drive, in Panama City Beach, Fla.

If you’ve visited Florida for many years you probably remember a theme park called Cypress Gardens but did you know it now has new life as Legoland Florida?

First opened in 1936, Cypress Gardens was world-famous for its water ski shows and large botanical gardens.

Today at 150 acres, the gardens have been left largely intact and are a peaceful escape from heat and crowds. And there still is a family-friendly water ski show produced by Legoland called Pirates Cove Live Action Water Stunt Show.

The Gardens area features lush foliage and diversity of plants is astounding. Paved paths wind through the gardens, past towering century old banyan trees, across flowing streams, and waterfalls cas-cade around every turn. There is plenty of shade and benches, making this area a good option to explore in the heat of the day.

But don’t miss out on what Legoland has to offer.Park officials recently announced the impending mid-May opening of a resort hotel on property

and a planned girl’s area called Heartlake City targeting girls ages 6 to 10 scheduled to open in summer. Hotel guests will have the option of working with Legoland’s master model builders.

At the park, adults will be just as amazed as children in an area called Miniland. Each area features a 1/20 scale diorama of real cities and other locations. There are models of Florida cities, including Miami, Key West, Tampa, St. Augustine and Tallahassee and iconic attractions such as the Kennedy Space Cen-ter. Large American cities including New York, Washington, San Francisco and Las Vegas.

Kids are thrilled by the interactivity of the attractions. The main ride attractions area is where kids, of course, are the focus. But many of the rides are big enough to thrill teenagers and adults while still able to be ridden by young children over 42 inches tall, which is about the average height of a 5 year old. Various non-thrill attractions allow smaller children to play safely, while giving parents and grandparents a chance to just sit back and enjoy watching them have fun.

If you visit in the heat of the summer, bring a bathing suit and enjoy the water park. A lazy river full of floating Legos winds throughout the area. The centerpiece is a large wave pool with poolside lounging. And of course it boasts large assortment of water slides of multiple sizes to keep kids playing for hours.
