Attention Voters of Starke CountyThe vote center plan will be voted on February 3rd, 2020 at 9:30 a.m. C.S.T in the Annex
Building meeting room. The public is encouraged to attend.Vote Centers are being sought as a convenience to the voter. If this plan passes you will have
the option to vote at any of seven vote centers throughout the county. Check-in will be done onan e-poll book increasing the efficiency with a simple scan of your driver’s license or stateissued ID card.
Mail in ballots and travel board ballots will still be accepted. Absentee voting will still be avail-able in the Clerk’s office 28 days before Election Day. With Vote Center we will have extra in-person opportunities to vote in Koontz Lake and North Judson. Both of these satellite officeswill be open Monday through Saturday. One will be open two weeks before the election andthe second one week before the election.
The move to vote centers would increase the voting opportunities from 150.5 hours to 215.5hours.
With the move to vote centers the request for food can be accommodated.The plan will also save the taxpayers money in each election cycle by saving up to
$30,000.00 per year. This plan has been voted on twice since January 8th, 2020 and has failed to pass. It must be
a unanimous vote of the Starke County Election Board. Please make your voice heard! It failedbecause one member does not feel that there has been enough public comment on the issue.This is a chance for Starke County to move forward into the future and this will be a positivechange for the County Voters.
Please contact the Starke County Clerk’s Office to leave messages for the Starke CountyElection Board at [email protected] or 574-772-9160. You can also contact theParty Chairs: Dave Kesvormas is the Republican Party Chair and Jeffrey Houston is theDemocrat Party Chair. If you are in favor of vote centers please call and make your voices heard. This will be the lastopportunity to make this positive and well received change before the 2020 Primary Election.

GROUNDHOG DAY 2020On Sunday, February 2, the nation will watch with bated breath
as Punxsutawney Phil emerges from his burrow. It’s said that ifPhil encounters his shadow, we’ll be in for six more weeks ofwinter weather, but if he doesn’t, then spring is just around thecorner. So which will it be this year?Groundhog Day is actually rooted in astronomy. The date is tied
to the movement of the Earth around the Sun; it marks theapproximate halfway point between the winter solstice and thespring equinox! (Note: This is true for the Northern Hemisphere.In the Southern Hemisphere, Groundhog Day marks the halfwaypoint between the summer solstice and the autumnal equinox.)Originally, Groundhog Day was a Celtic festival marking theyear’s first cross-quarter day, or a midpoint between seasons.Read more about the ancient Celtic calendar here.This day has also been called St. Brigid’s Day, which stems
from a mixing of figures and traditions from pagan and Christianbeliefs. The Celtic goddess Brigantia is associated with dawn,light, and spring, which are qualities later associated with Brigidof Kildare, a Christian saint (and one of Ireland’s patron saints).Groundhog Day has a rich history based on a deeper meaning;
it speaks to the triumph of spring over winter—and birth overdeath. Again, note the appearance of light over dark with theappearance of candles and dawn—and, of course, the spirituallight of a holier presence.
What Is a Groundhog?The groundhog, also known as a woodchuck or whistlepig, typi-
cally makes its home in the brambles and thickets that growwhere forests meet fields. There, it digs burrows between 4 and6 feet deep and up to 40 feet long—removing as much as 700pounds of dirt in the process. Like its squirrel relatives, the groundhog eats leaves, grass,
flowers, bark, and twigs and climbs trees to reach tender buds orfruit. This furry animal will also go after just about any crop,favoring beans, peas, and carrot tops. It may even take a biteout of every squash or pumpkin in a row, instead of consumingjust one. See how to deter groundhogs in the garden.But the mischief-maker is not all nuisance. Its burrows allow air
and water to penetrate the soil and, when abandoned, theybecome homes for opossums and other small animals. Thegroundhog itself serves as food for larger creatures, such asbobcats, foxes, and wolves.With hungry predators on the prowl, it takes courage for a
groundhog to emerge from its hole every February to make itsforecast. It must take its job very seriously!
