Paper by Dr. Stephen Messer from Taylor University, along with a syllabus and itinerary for his “On the Road with the Freedom Struggle: A Civil Rights Movement Study Tour.” Dr. Messer led students on a two and a half-week trek through the South to visit sites of significance to the Civil Rights movement. It also includes an article from the Fall 1995 issue of Race and Democracy newsletter detailing Dr. Messer’s tour. Surely, Dr. Messer was an inspiration for Dr. Lamon and the IU South Bend Freedom Summer Tours.

One features an article written by Tribune staff writer Tim Harmon about the inaugural Freedom Summer 2000 tour, and another an article written by Tim Harmon entitled “Reliving ‘Bloody Sunday’” about Freedom Summer students walking across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. The bridge was the site of the infamous 1965 “Bloody Sunday” march where people protesting in favor of civil rights were met by violent opposition from local police.
