Freedom on the Anacostia !e Act of Csion The Addison family is one of the oldest families in Maryland and Washington, DC dating back to the colonial period of the 1600’s. They are originally from the Addison plantation on the Chichester between Anacostia and Congress Heights on the Eastern Branch of Washington, DC. U.S. Senate Chaplin Walter D. Addison lived on the Oxon Hill Manor (National Harbor) plantation for many years alone with his 20 Addison slaves. He freed them 65 years before the end of slaver in the year 1800 and went on to become the rector of his great grandfather’s parish called Saint John’s. The only slaves who survived him were “Aunt” Rachel and Robert Addison. As Walter’s self proclaimed legacy in his last will and testament, Rachel was a pensioner and Robert was an overseer. Their descendants went on to establish their own place in history, fighting for the prosperity of America while influencing the region into equality. The results of their work along with others like President Lincoln, General Stanton, Frederick Douglas, General Howard and Jacob Moore the Teamster would go on to establish our Freedom on the Anacostia.
