Freeland

By:Victoria Abercrombie

Friday, October 19, 12

Once upon a time, a family with many children, the Hulseys moved to a little town, named Freeeland. You see, the Hulseys had traveled to many lands and thought that ultimate freedom would be so wonderful, and so they settled in Freeland. As they began their new life in this society, their oldest child, Malachi, wanted to hunt with a gun he

had acquired from a land that they had visited.

The people had never seen such a device and it frightened them. A founding father of the city, Henry Gibbs, took the rifle away and therefore the first law was born. “No guns allowed”. Malachi wanted to stand up for his right to have the gun, but there was no such fair trial in Freeland.

Henry Gibbs decided to be the president of Freeland, so he could protect the town he loved.

The Hulseys sought to reason with President Gibbs. He just wanted peace and so he asked Damon Hulsey, Malachi’s father, to help him form a government for their town. The two became fast friends. Damon had traveled to many lands and had lots of ideas, such as, the right to bear arms.

d searched for the gun and took it.

Malachi was allowed to have a gun and any other townspeople were able to have one too. The town was able to hunt for other animals and many people were very happy. One day, there was a tragedy. The

baker, May Baxter moved her husbands gun and it accidentally went off and shot her helper Pamela in the foot. The town was upset once again. Pamela’s family thought May was to blame and should be punished. The new soldiers of the Freeland, came to

May’s house an

Henry and Damon made a court system to help decide what to do, Freeland was changing. May held a meeting with some townspeople to have them be on her side. Henry told the town that there were no secret meetings allowed. Henry and Damon fought about this until they decided that citizens should have the right to meet

peacefully, speak their own opinion, and their own religion. The new courts had a way to hear both sides of the story and the town had a new right to a fair trial. Now, every citizen would have a jury of townspeople to hear their case and a judge would be appointed to make it fair. May was kept in the jail in town until the trial. Pamela began to get very sick and her family became more upset. Pamela’s husband, Doug, had been a guard in the jail and starts punishing May by not giving her food or even being able to shower. Malachi hears about this cruel punishment and tells his father. Damon makes the new right of every citizen to not have cruel or unusual punishment. Doug gets more angry that Pamela is getting worse and may die. Freeland is divided. May goes to trial and says that she wants someone to help with her case and says she will not talk. Henry agrees and says she has rights in a criminal case. Therefore making their fourth right. The town begins to record these rights and calls them the bill of rights. Doug forms a group with some of his fellow soldiers and they begin to

storm into other citizens’ homes looking for their guns, staying in the homes and forcing the people to serve them. This makes the town frightened. Henry immediately makes two new rights for the people, rights to not be searched in their home, person, or

belongings without a paper saying it is allowed, a warrent. The other new right states that no soldier may force quartering in a citizen’s home without their consent.

May finally goes to court. The judge says her punishment should be that all her families’ riches, land and powers be given to Pamela. Joe, May’s husband pleads for his family and goes to another state to get help. Freeland has many new rights when Joe returns home, the first being the right of trial by jury shall be preserved, and not be re-examined in any other court. As well as, the right of the states to the states, meaning that Freeland may have its own rights. Freeland’s right to elect a president and also the right of the president to be in office for a limited time frame. Freeland needed order and were wanting to encourage the women in their town after the trial of May Baxter, and also invoked the rights of women to vote. The voting process also proceeded with the new right of the citizens to be able to vote without paying taxes. Damon and Henry weren’t receiving any income for their new careers as leaders of Freeland. They made an additional right for the income tax to be in force, which taxes the citizen’s income. Pamela gained her strength back, and May and her became friends again. Freeland

was changed forever and the rights were retained by the people.
