Volkswagen has sim-ply added extra boot spaceto the ballistic Golf R, andit might have just made abrilliant everyday perfor-mance car even better.

egant, classic silhouette.Our feelings are that theoptional (but more at-tractive) five dual-spokewheels are worth adding.

Adding an impressive225 litres of boot spaceis only part of the story.As an estate this versiongivesyoutheoptionto slotthings like household ap-pliances in without neces-sarily having to drop theback seats.

To add the estate boot isa mere £695 box-tickingexercise, so why wouldn’tyou?On the other hand, italready costs more than aBMW M135i.

Make no mistake, theGolf R estate is a laugh-out-loud marvellous eve-

ryday car. It ticks mostof the weekday boxeswith ease and laps uphigh-adrenaline action oncountry roads or the racetrack at the weekend.

Modernised but its cramped in the bacAT LONG last the C-Max, Fordof Europe’s third-best-sellingmodel, has been brought intoline with the One Ford pro-gramme, so there are newlooks, new technologies and asimplified cabin.

This, the seven-seat GrandC-Max, has had the same up-grades. Smaller revisions have

made their way in too, likethe reinstatement of a sparewheel in lieu of the (generallyuseless) tyre repair kit.

The Grand C-Max loses someof the five-seat version’s looks,for which you can blame thehigher roof line and metalchannels to allow the reardoors to slide backwards.

Despite the brilliantly prac-tical sliding rear doors thingsarerathercramped inthe veryback.The middlerowcan slideforwards to expand the non-existent foot space back there,but then that cuts down onspace for those in row two.

There are two overwhelmingand lasting impressions froma drive in the Grand C-Max.The first is how pleasantlywell connected it feels to theroad.

The second is there is toomuch interference from thenew active safety systems.Graphics blink away withreadouts of your proximityto other cars, steering wheelvibrations warn you whenyou’re at the edge of your laneand annoying beeps and flash-ingwarnings tell you whenthecar thinks you’re going to hit

something, which, invariably,you’re not.

The pricing structure cen-tres around a core of likelyvolume-sellersbetween £21,000and £25,000, making it a rela-tively affordable route into awell-specified seven-seater.

Clearly, families are the tar-get market. Generous parents

with only two kids will appre-ciate the ability to ferry extrayoung ‘uns around, and pro-ductive mums and dads withlimited parking space at homewill appreciate the Grand C-Max’s neat dimensions.

This car summed up in a sin-gle word – advanced.

If this car was a car designerit would leave itself largely asitis, butit mightditchsomeof the electronic interruptions.
