Pink Floyd ExperienceMain Street Armory | Feb. 20 The San Diego-based tribute band, Pink Floyd Experience, is Zachary Throne on vocals/gui-tar, Gus Beaudoin on bass, Jesse Molloy on saxophone, John Cox on keys, and Bob Sale on drums. The tribute show is known as be-ing a huge theatrical experience with a “mind-blowing” light & video show and full quadraphonic sound.

Think Cyndi Lauper, ZZ Top, A-ha and Dire Straits played with banjo, mandolin and high lonesome vocals. The Charlottes-ville, VA based band features Jesse Harper, Adam Larrabee, Andy Thacker, Darrell Muller, Nate Leath, Jay Starling and Zachariah Hickman.

Ron WhiteAuditorium Theatre | Feb. 21 Ron White’s comic routines found great exposure while per-forming with “The Blue Collar Comedy Tour,” featuring such top comedians as Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall and Larry the Cable Guy. His career was furthered by the success of his CD, Drunk in Public and his DVD, They Call Me Tater Salad. He’s appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman, Comedy Central’s Premium Blend and had his own half-hour stand-up special for Comedy Central Presents. Known for his cigar smoking and scotch drinking comedic antics, Ron has achieved two Grammy nominations, a Gold Record, and a book that appeared on the New York Times’ Best Seller

List. His new stand-up show is titled, “A Little Unprofessional.”

Whitey Morgan & The 78’sAbilene Bar & Lounge | Feb. 21 Whitey Morgan and The 78’s hails from Flint MI. They’re a honky-tonk group that plays classic country. Whitey’s whisky-tinged vocals combined with foot-stomping beats has earned the group fans nationwide. CDs include Honky Tonks and Cheap Motels and a self-titled one.

Shinedown & Three Days Gracew/P.O.DBlue Cross Arena | Feb. 22 Jacksonville-based hard rock-ers, Shinedown, featuring guitar-

ist Zach Meyers, drummer Barry Kerch, bassist/pianist/vocalist Eric Bass, and vocalist Brent Smith blends bold guitar riffs, blues-driven vocals and cutting-edge metallic mayhem to form their signature sound. Releases include the albums Leave A Whis-per, Us And Them, The Sound of Madness and Amaryllis; with a new one just recorded. Singles include “45,” “I Dare You,” “Save Me,” “Second Chance,” “Devour,” “The Crow and the Butterfly” and “Bully.”... Little River Band Nola’s | Feb. 22 Australian rockers, Little River Band, are a supergroup made up of some of that nation’s top talent. Their hit, “Cool Change,” has been ranked as one of the top 30 Australian songs of all time and the group was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Hall of Fame in 2004. Studio albums include the classic LPs of Diamantina Cocktail, Sleeper Catcher, First Under the Wire and Time Exposure. The most recent release is Cuts Like a Diamond...Rochester’s own Tommy Brunett Band opens.

Spiritual Rez Club @ Water St. | Feb. 22 Sprung from the basements of Berklee College of Music in early 2003, Spiritual Rez is known for its unique sound and high-energy live performances. Calling themselves “the craziest Reggae dance party you’ll ever be part of,” the group writes and tours constantly. Just ImagineNazareth Arts Center | Feb. 23 Spoken narrative, interwoven with John Lennon songs and Beatles favorites are at the heart of this multi-media show as Tim Piper brings his life’s work to the stage with Just Imagine – a tribute show to John Lennon’s life and music. Backed by a live band,

Piper takes the audience through an imagined final performance with Lennon, discussing the in-spiration for many of his songs and his personal relationships.

The RevelersHarmony House | Feb. 23 The Revelers are a Lafayette, LA-based band comprised of founding members of The Red Stick Ramblers and The Pine Leaf Boys. This new project combines Cajun, country, blues and zydeco into a powerful roots sound that’s straight from southwest Louisi-ana, promising to get audiences up and moving. The group now tours in support of their Les Revel-ers CD.

MagpieRoch. Christian Reformed Church | Feb. 23 Greg Artzner and Terry Le-onino who form the duo Magpie, are accomplished vocalists who accompany themselves on guitar, harmonica, mandolin and dul-cimer. Their styles range from jazz, blues, swing and ragtime to ballads and poignant songs of social comment. These master ar tists, who have performed from the Smithsonian Institution to the Wolf Trap Institute, offer fun, enlightening, and inspiring concerts suitable for all interests and ages.

Mandolin Orangew/Well Worn BootAbilene Bar & Lounge | Feb. 23 North Carolina’s Mandolin Orange play lyric and harmony focused tunes on acoustic and

electric guitars, fiddle and man-dolin. Their sound features a mix of bluegrass and rock and roll, with old school country thrown in for good measure...Buffalo’s Well Worn Boot is a four-piece rock and roll act that employs Wild-West themed narratives of American folklore in its show.

Jeanne JollyAbilene Bar & Lounge | Feb. 26 Singer/songwriter Jeanne Jolly has performed as a featured vocal-ist with Chris Botti as well as at the Monterey Jazz Festival and Carnegie Hall. She released her first CD, Angels, last October.

Ballake Sissoko and Vincent SegalKilbourn Hall| Feb. 26 Ballake Sissoko performs on the kora, a 21-string bridge-harp traditionally used in West Africa. Ballake has worked with Taj Ma-hal, Tourmani Diabate, his father, Djelimady Sissoko and others. The 2009 album, Chamber Music as well as his latest, At Peace are collaborations with the French classical cellist, Vincent Segal, who shares the stage at this show. Segal is known for his col-laborative and out of the ordinary projects with artists as varied as Steve Nieve, Elvis Costello, the reggae band Tryo, and Sting (on his album Winter’s Night).

Huey Mackw/OCD: Moosh & TwistClub @ Water St. | Feb. 27 Huey Mack (“Wish Me Luck” / “Bright Lights” / “Long Nights” / “Freshman Fifteen”), the nineteen-year-old hip hop artist from West Virginia, stops in town along with eighteen-year-old brothers, OCD: Moosh & Twist (“City Kids” / “Live It Up” / “The Welcome Mat” / “The Vestibule”) from Philadel-phia.

Thousand Foot Krutchw/Love and Death & The Letter BlackWater St. Music Hall | Feb. 27 Canadian Christian rockers, Thousand Foot Krutch features lead singer Trevor McNevan. The group has five CDs to their credit – Set It Off, Phenomenon, The Art of Breaking, The Flame In All of Us, Welcome to the Masquerade and The End Is Where We Begin. These multiple GMA Dove and Juno Award-nominees have achieved numerous hit singles with “War of Change” serving as the theme song for the 2012 edition of WWE Over The Limit...Love and Death, under the leadership of Brian “Head” Welch (formerly of Korn), tours in support of a new release, Between Here & Lost...The Letter Black, featuring Sarah and Mark Anthony, Matt Beal and Justin Brown, has released a full-length

What made you want to play Macon? Ithoughthehadacertainsortofwitandcharm–anenigmaticquality,whichIliked.ButIwasn’tveryclearaboutwhohe is,andwhyheis.Sinceheisamanwhohaspowertochangealotabouthimself and about his environ-ment,it’sfairlydifficulttopinhimdown,which I think is perhapshowheshouldbe.Soit’sprobablygoodthatIamnotabletoexplainhimtoomuch,yet.

At what point did you know that you were the inspiration for the character in the novel the film is based on? Is it true that you like being unprepared when you begin a project?

I used to feel that way. I’m notsureInowfeellikethat.I’vejustdone Henry IV for PBS. Mindyou, that’s Shakespeare, and Iwascompletelypreparedforthat,andIfounditagreathelp.ButIthink theway Iwouldnowaimto be is to be completely readyfor anything, which demands acertain preparation. And thenjust throw it allout.But in thisfilmIhadnopreparationbecauseIwasstraightoffapictureIwasmakinginLisbon.Thecostumeshad been made, the accent hadbeensortofdecidedon.Iasked[director] Richard LaGravenesetotellmeallyouknowaboutthischaracter.

Do you have any advice for young actors? Don’tgiveup.You’realwaysbe-ingslappeddown,you’realwaysbeingrejected.You’realwaysbe-ingmadetofeelyoucan’tdoit,andtheoneswhosucceedaretheoneswhodon’tgiveup.

Did you have a mentor who said that to you? Iwastoldthatbytheprincipalatmytheaterschool.Iwaswork-ingdownattheOldVicinBristol.Itwasaround12o’clockatnight,wewerechangingoveroneplay,andanothersetwascomingin.Itwasanoldtheater,therewasalotofdust,andIwasalwayswheez-ing. I wasn’t getting any rolesonstage.Iwasdoingallthisstuffoffstage,workingverylonghours.Iremembercallingtheprincipalandmoaning,sayingI’mnotsureIcandealwiththis.Andontheother end of the line, he said,“Soldieron,Jeremy,soldieron.”

What have you got lined up in acting? Nothing right now. I’m prob-ably going to do another seriesof The Borgias. But in the pasttwo years, I’ve made four films,twoseriesofThe Borgias,andtwodocumentaries.I’msortoffeelingrightnowthatI’dquiteliketostopforalittlebit.

Forashortwhileaftersittingdowntowatchthisgothic-tingedstory of young love, you justmightgetthefeelingthatyou’veseen itbefore, inanotverydif-ferent form.Aboymeets a girl,andthey’re“different”fromeachother,buttheydon’tletthatgetinthewayofromance,eventhoughlots of people around them dotheirbesttobreakitup.Ah,yes,there was that franchise thatstartedwithTwilight.Andjustacoupleofweeksago,wehadWarm Bodies. So yeah, this new one,like itspredecessors, alsobased

on a novel, may sound similar,but it comes from and goes offinto many other directions. It’scertainly the most properly su-pernaturalofthebunch.Andit’smuchclassier. When we meet 17-year-oldSouth Carolinian Ethan (AldenEhrenreich), we find out rightawaythathe’savoraciousreader(Vonnegut’shis current choice),is kind of a loner, and is beingbroughtupbyhiswidowerdad. He’s also having some prettyweirddreamsaboutagirlwhosefacehecan’tquitesee. Holdon,there’sanewgirlintown and at school, 15-year-oldorphan Lena (Alice Englert),who’s come to live with herwealthy, fashion conscious, andvery mysterious Uncle Macon(Jeremy Irons)at thecreepyoldRavenwoodplace.She,too,lovesto read (Bukowski’s her presentfave). Could she be the “girl of hisdreams?” There’s nothing likeloveatfirstsightbetweenthem.He shows some interest, partlybecause she has an outspokenattitude, but likely because ev-

TherearelotsofspellscastonlotsofpeopleinthislittleSouth-erntown.Andwhilethestoryismostlyabouttheslowlyformingattraction between Ethan andLena, the parade of charactersaround them gives the film anundeniablerichness.ViolaDavisplaysAmma, local librarianandlongtimefriendofEthan’sfamily(separatecharactersinthebook),awomanwithplentyofherownsecrets. Watch out for EmmyRossum(currentlyinShowtime’sShameless)asRidley,aslinkysor-ceresswholikestohaveherwaywithunsuspectingmen.But thefilm’sbestscene-stealinggoestotheever-surprisingEmmaThomp-son,takingontworoles:thebible-thumpingMrs.Lincoln,andthefearsomeandextremelypowerfulSarafine.Thompsonmanages tomakeherpartsbothfrighteningandover-the-tophilarious. The plot ends up gravitatingtowardthealwayspopularbattlebetween the light and the dark,aswellastheoldShakespearianchestnutofforbiddenlove,inthiscasebetweenaCaster(somethingthatLenawillsoonbecome)andamortal.Betweenplentifuldosesof creepiness, visual effects, a(literally)swirlingsequenceaboutfamilydynamics,andaquickdipintomelodrama,thisisafilmthatwillpleasetheyoungviewersit’saimed at, and still keep olderaudiences who couldn’t handletheridiculousnessoftheTwilight serieshappilyengaged.
