Getting ready for the Olympic Games

On July 6, 2005, London is selected for the 2012 Olympic Games. The euphoria is short-lived: the next day, 52 people die in suicide attacks in public transportation, dur-ing rush hour. Despite the grief, the organiz-ers must concentrate on building. The long transformation of a disused industrial zone starts in East London. The idea is to create a huge Olympic site crossed by navigable riv-ers with state-of-the-art sports facilities. On the long run, the park is supposed to bring these underprivileged neighborhoods back to life by creating thousands of jobs.

In 2007, the Olympic Games budget already exceeds eleven billion Euros, that is to say four times the initial amount. At the same time, the financial crisis gains ground and the successive prime ministers fight to justify the necessaries public spending.

The building schedule is respected. Next to a eighty-thousand-seat stadium, a futuristic aquatic center and a bicycle ring are rising from the ground. The site devoted to canoeing in Northern London is the first one to open in the 2011 spring. A bit earlier, a winding sculpture by Anish Kapoor is erected in the park and the former industrial and polluted landscape is (completely) transformed. The structures are set from then on and the organizers multiply competitions in order to leave nothing to chance but sports events results and the color of the sky.
