French Geography• During the 16th and 17th century, corn
cultivation spread eastward around the Mediterranean and was a popular meal for the poor around Italy and southern France by 1700. Potato cultivation expanded slowly often because the government wanted to fix the famines and increase the population rate.
• New Netherlands attracted emigrants from France because of the religious tolerance and ethnically mixed colony.
• If religious conflict and economic suffering caused to push colonial emigration, the French would have over ruled the English and the Dutch.
France
• In 1688 the Dutch encountered a renewed war with France, under the strong rule of Louis XIV.
• English had to build a larger and more professional army and navy to overcome France who was the strongest kingdom at the time in Europe. England was able to manage by a state bureaucracy and funded by higher levels of taxation.
• The lightest taxed people in Europe were the English, who joined France, and the Dutch were the most heavily taxed.
• The French sailors and officers could not match the sailing and combat experience of the British. France avoided the naval battles and favored their army better.
