This issue we feature the work of the talented young floraldesigner Natalie Stanyer. At a champagne reception in JuneNatalie unveiled her new shop, ‘Natalie at Elizabeth’s’ in

Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire. At this year’s Chelsea Flower Show the floristry competition was all about floralhats, and stunners they were too. Congratulations go to OASIS® Ambassador NeilWhittaker, his romantic hat won him the title of ‘RHS Chelsea Florist of the Year.’ Inthe young florist category OASIS® Academy runner-up, Joe Massie scooped thetop prize of ‘RHS Chelsea Young florist of the Year,’ with his amazing coolie hat.

Both Neil and Joe are now about to take on the world. Neil Whittaker will berepresenting Great Britain in the Interflora World Cup to be held in March 2010 inShanghai, China. Joe Massie is Great Britain’s competitor in the World Skillscompetition to be held in Calgary, Canada in the autumn. They are the perfectambassadors to show off Great Britain’s professional floristry skills to the world.

Spring and soft stemmed flowers need a different treatment to other flowers. Their stems are delicate and break easily. OASIS® ClassicFloral Foam is made especially for soft stems and with a lighter density it is perfect to hold fragile stems. Leaf yellowing often spoils the look of anarrangement first, and particularly incontract work, where flowers and foliageare in hot conditions for up to a week. At 22, Natalie Stanyer has already had theworld at her feet. She could not haveimagined, even in her wildest dreams, thatwhen she started as a Saturday girl, at the ageof fifteen, at ‘Elizabeth’s’ in Newcastle-under-

Lyme, that she would come so far, in such ashort time. In 2007 Natalie represented GreatBritain in the World Skills Floristry competitionthat was held in Japan. She finished fourth outof sixteen competing countries and she wasawarded a Medal of Excellence. When talkingabout the experience she stresses that theexperience of competing in the UK and theWorld Skills was the most phenomenalexperience, and a pivotal moment in herdevelopment as a floral designer.

Natalie then went on last year to win theprestigious OASIS® Academy competitionconfirming her place as one of Great Britain’smost talented young florists. Natalie’soutstanding success has now culminated inthe purchase of the shop where she startedwork seven years ago, as an apprenticeflorist.

Now Natalie, with her sister Jo Searle, havetransformed the double fronted shop in theheart of The Potteries, Staffordshire andcommercial success is bound to follow. Thewide display windows are perfectly designedto showcase the visually arresting floristry

that has Natalie’s artistic signature stampedall over them. In a corner of the shop a newlydesignated make up area means thatcustomers can watch the florists and becomeuniquely involved in the creation of their floralgifts. Upstairs on the light and airy first floor, aspecial quiet seating area means that Natalieand her team can concentrate on takingbridal and sympathy flower orders, away fromthe hustle and bustle of the shop floor. Everyaspect of the shop and its image has beenmeticulously thought out to give thecustomers a great buying experience.

Simon Bartley, the chief executive of UKSkills, summed up Natalie’s achievements inhis speech, at the launch of her newenterprise by expressing his delight at seeinga shy young student blossom into a selfassured young woman, powering her way tothe top of her profession. Natalie is a fabulousrole model for fledgling florists and anemerging young talent.

On a chilly evening at thebeginning of June the sleepytown of Newcastle-under-Lyme came alive with florists.

As the light began to fade, a florists shop stood out like a shining beacon, Natalie Stanyer was celebratingthe launch of ‘Natalie at Elizabeth’s’. Friends, customers, floristry royalty, high flying executives and thefloral elite all converged on the revamped shop to toast the young florist extraordinaire, and to join in theexcitement of Natalie’s new venture.

1. Float soak theOASIS® Floral FoamNetted Sphere forhanging designsand then leave todrain away anyexcess water. Donot over soak as this will make the Sphere too heavy.Secure a long wire or tie a strong ribbon to the top ofthe Sphere for hanging designs. Secure the bottompiece of netting into the Sphere with a Mossing Pin.

2. Fill the ball withshort pieces ofGypsophila,ensuring that thestems push wellinto the floral foamfor security and toabsorb water. Space the Roses evenly around theSphere and again push the stems firmly into the floralfoam. Add a Diamante Pin to the centre of each Rose.

3. Make a longgossamer garlandby using severalstrands of MetallicWire. Then twisttiny pin wheelsalong their length.Thread Beads onto a long wire. Add some narrowOrganza ribbon, wire all the strands together and usea pin to secure the garland into the foam Sphere atone side. Add trails of lace also if desired. Spray withwater and suspend securely.
