What clearly makesFresh Start unique isthat the ministryfocuses on your heartrather than yourcircumstances or theeffects of your losschanging. This is a veryeffective focus, because itmakes it about your heart,something you CANinfluence or change.

Fresh Start meets everyTuesday night at CovenantPresbyterian Church, 150thandBlondo, from7pm to 9 pm.The environment is safe andcaring.

The first hour is a groupexperience split into twoexpressions: the maingathering and Fresh StartNOW. The main gatheringfeatures a person's Fresh Start"story" or a unique message onsome aspect of forgiveness.

The Fresh Start NOW group isfocused on high school andcollege, young people ages14-25. It is high energy andinteractive, with groupdramas, games, and also

opportunity todiscover issues ofoffense, hurt, and loss.

The second hour of the mainFresh Start gathering is focusedon the Freedom Series—moretruth and perspective,examples on forgiving oneanother, and identifying otherhindrances to relationalwholeness.

"Fresh Start is a purposefulpath, as well as a process," saysSteve Peterson.

There are actually six partsto this purposeful path.

Everyone, at somepoint in theirlives, experiences some sort ofoffense, hurt, or loss. StevePeterson, founderofFreshStartfor All Nations, met with SaltMagazine to sharewith us howthis ministry provides peoplewith tools to deal with thoseissues of our heart that affect usdaily.

"We love to help men, women,and young people become freefrom the effects of offense, hurt,and loss.Whenyou thinkaboutit, who hasn't been hurt? Whohasn't been offended? Whohasn't experienced a loss? Itmight be relational, financial,environmental, in their home,family, a tsunami—anynumber of things. A lifestyle offorgiven and forgiving—that iswhat is powerful, and theresulting freedom in JesusChrist that follows," says Steve.

Fresh Start ~It's NEVER too late!

What happens atFresh Start?

First, youidentify who or

what hashurt you, oroffendedyou, orwhatloss

you'veexperienced.

Secondly, youdiscover how you

have been affected by theoffense, hurt or loss.

Third, you consider how youhave responded—what youhave said, done, or decided.

The fourthpartonthispath is topour out your heart to God.This could include reallygetting REAL with God, evenpouring out your complaint.

You don't want to stay in thefourth part, of course. Duringthispart of theprocess, youalsolearn how to actually givethanks, no matter what thecircumstances or prospect forchange.

The fifth part is, finally, whenyou actually FORGIVE thepersonwho has hurt, offended,or wronged you.

Finally, in the sixth part youconclude the process byreleasing that person to Jesusand choosing to pray for andbless them. You "CANCELTHE DEBT" they owe you.

brings his experience of workingwith youth to this awesomeministry at Fresh Start.

Joe says, "We try to show peoplehow a biblical view, a real, true,Christ-like model of forgivenesscan really change lives. Romans12:2 (NIV) says, ‘Do not conform tothe pattern of this world, but betransformed by the renewing ofyour mind.’

It's never too late… but why wait?

"We're trying to transform people;we're not trying to make people gothrough an anger managementclass."

Fresh Start NOW allows youngadults to have deep conversationsabout their hurts, offenses, or losses(in groups of all guys or all girls) andto go through the Fresh Startprocess. Coaching is common, butnot counseling; the goal is not toprovide an immediate "answer" toyour situation, but rather to dig deepinto how your heart was affected byyour hurt or loss.

While disclosing a story from hischildhood, Joe explained theswimming concept of “bobbing.”This swimming exercise is a way ofpracticing holding your breath byslowly exhaling until you reach thebottom of a pool and pushing off ofit to reach the surface again. It mightbe fun, but you never really goanywhere. Many of us are goingthrough life this way, just survivingbreath by breath, whether it is at ajob, in school, with friends orparents, etc.

"I believe the youth of America arepowerful, passionate, motivated,energetic, and excited, but we don'tknow where we're going." says Joe.Joe's goal at Fresh Start NOW is toprovide that purpose and directionfor this youthful generation—tohelp bobbers become swimmers,purposely going in a direction, using

the water of their circumstances tofulfill their purpose and gosomewhere in life.

A bible verse dear to Joe's heart isProverbs 4:23 (NIV): “Above allelse guard your heart, for it is thewellspring of life.” Correspondingwith this verse, Joe has come torealize that everyone, especiallytoday’syouth, are inadeadlywar fortheir hearts, making the concept ofguarding one’s heart essential tolife. Fresh Start NOW gives youththe tools necessary to experiencefreedom while they are young, andnot wait to realize it until they aremuch older (i.e., in their 50’s or60's). That's why it's called FreshStartNOW!Joe's heart is focusedonsaving youth from experiencing a“mid-life crisis” due to misplacedcareer efforts and hard hearts theycould have been freed from whenthey were a teenager.
