Teeth that do not fitPeople are born with all sorts of differences in their bodies that may have to be dealt with for a person to be comfortable. For example, if someone is born with a much shorter leg than the other, special footwear helps the person to be balanced. A difference in leg length is definitely obvious, but not so much when teeth do not fit together right. The interesting part is that an orthotic can be used to treat both problems.

When one side of the mouth is more open than the other, it is similar to one leg being shorter than the other. If a person has this issue in his/her mouth, stress and strain is caused when he/she bites down, chews, or clinches the teeth. Because both sides do not hit at the same time, the muscles pull the jaw in all sorts of directions. This is a condition that can destroy teeth and jaw joints as well as cause headaches, ear problems, and neck issues.

A plastic orthotic that is thicker on one side is placed between the teeth so that when the person bites down, everything is even, just like with foot orthotics. With balance, the body relaxes and the teeth do not get destroyed. Ears clear, joints become more stable, and muscles relax. The persistent tension headaches often disappear.

Finding out exactly where the jaw wants to be in its balanced state is the challenge for dentists. There are conflicting theories on where that position should be.
