The President’s Corner – Greg WalshAs Polonius said, “Though this be madness, yet there is method in’t”.

Your Club has what I often think of as the mad task of providing a little something for everyone. In the early years, this was simple - organize Performance Driving Schools with Car Control Clinics. This was a primary reason for forming the Club and drove membership expansion for the first decade or so. The demise of Race City curtailed these events. So, seeing this coming, the Club entered into a new modus operandi in 2009 emphasizing a wider sociability and family inclusivity in all events.

This transition included the ever-evolving printed Freude am Fahren, now accompanied by the emailed Joy of Driving. We put greater emphasis on shop tours and discounts from our various supporters. Driving tours became more diversified, organized and frequent. I was appointed Event Coordinator in 2009 and redesigned the Kalender of Events to give consis-tency and predictability to social and technical events.

If you look at the Kalender, you will see a rich smorgasbord of events, which we organize at consistent times throughout the year with maximum notice of timing.

There are two major Socials - the BBQ/Show & Shine in August and the Christmas Party in November. The BBQ has supplanted the Spring Driving School as our most attended event.

We have organized Country Drives - Fathers’ Day, one optional in July and one in September. For those wanting the more exotic we added Tours-to-far-off-places like the Dolomites, Monterey and planned tours of the Appalachians and Swiss Alps, in the late summer-early fall. More recently we have taken up the scheduled CC&C’s and unscheduled Impromptu Drives .

The Spring and Fall months are allotted Technical Events such as Shop-tours, Project Cars or Guest Speakers delving into the inner and outer workings of BMW’s. These Technical Events are normally set for a Thursday evening or Saturday morning in the last half of the month. We also have an active group that organizes extended tours such as the recent Dolomites 2014 and Monterey 2016 and the upcoming Appalachians and Switzerland tours. December and January are usually reserved with no events in order to give the volunteers a rest.

This structure has evolved in response to members’ requests and observed attendance. Your ideas for new and exciting ventures will keep our Kalender relevant and vibrant. As proof of this, take note that over the last couple of years, most of our Technical and Social Events have been proposed and organized by a variety of unique individuals. Many thanks, Ladies and Gents! Keep sending in those ideas!

I close with a fond farewell to Garry Leadbetter, who is retiring as our MotorSport Coordinator. Gary has been an indispensable and highly enthu-siastic organizer, promoter and instructor in all MotorSport activities and AADS Driving Schools since the Club’s initiation. I wish Gary and Heather many happy hours sailing the Gulf Islands.

Our Club succeeds because its members step forward. Thank you all.

I wish you joy of driving a BMW.

In the year 2025 … will Zen still survive? Our March issue starts the exploration of the avalanche of

automotive technology about to hit us. Not so many years ago, magazines carried flying car articles safely forecast for arrival many years hence. The hundred years in BMW’s “The Next Hundred Years” slogan, on the surface, seems to spell out a gradual evolution.

Yet, nothing could be further from the truth. When you read this month’s articles, you will be hit with how fast new features are hitting and more importantly how a dramatic change in driving is starting now and autonomous driving may only be 4-6 years away. All this may well

impact that seat of the pants driving experience that has made us driving junkies. How we used to see the perfect lap, the spirited attack on a windy and twisty road and even the long tour that created that feeling of Zen may require a lot of redefinition.

To wit, my first BMW was a 2000 528i with Sport Suspension. All you did was grab that wheel, tap the three pedals on the floor and row that gearbox for that great seat of the pants driving. GPS was my wife with maps from AMA. A drive in the US meant adding a yellow stick-it with the mph conversion. Mr. Zen was a simple guy to get ahold of!

PassagesIt is with deep sadness that we inform you of the passing of two

valued Club Members.

Di Brown, wife of past Club Director and Secretary Andy Brown, passed away peacefully in Courtenay, BC, January 22, 2017. Di will always be remembered for her bubbling personality and warm smiles as she organized our Wine and Beer Tastings and participated to the fullest in our Tours and other events.

Colin Card died unexpectedly on February 7, 2017. Colin was the Club Motorrad Liaison, contributor of M5 technical know-how to Freude am Fahren and organizer of the popular Geocaching esca-pade. He will be missed for his thoughtful and often witty comments at our get-togethers.

Eleven years later, the 2011 535 xi that came next was Star Trek by comparison – AWD, HUD, Run-flats, Cameras, Nav, I-Drive, Sirius, Voice Command, Satellite Radio, Adjustable Sport Modes, xDrive, Bluetooth and BMW Assist. You were now attached to and starting to depend on the Cloud. It took awhile to realize that all that increased safety and convenience and perhaps not listening to your wife’s driving instructions was changing the nature of Mr. Zen.

Five years later, the 2016 X5 that replaced the wife’s 2004 Lexus was perhaps not a huge leap forward relative to the 2011 535. It was a more incremental refinement – iDrive was more user friendly, the Nav system caught up with after market units, and - speed zones starting appearing in your Heads Up Display. Mr. Zen’s personality was getting more “cloudy”.

BMW has every ambition to stay ahead of the pack and the following articles only are the tip of what is coming. When you read the article on the M550i, Mr. Zen gets a rebuild from the power and handling side. However, the sheer wave of safety and connected technological ensures that Mr. Zen will have his head in the Cloud and BMW press releases talk about getting you ready for autonomous driving.

And perhaps the greatest and latest head fake to Mr. Zen, is BMW’s most recent announcement of the $160,000 M760Li xDrive, a 610 HP V12 flagship capable of 100 km/h in less than four seconds. Complete with every conceivable technological advancement, it also includes the Executive Lounge or “Captain’s Chair”. Your inner Captain Kirk gets a command position with maximum legroom, a footrest, heating, ventilation, plus reclining and massage functions not to mention rear screens and work tables. Methinks this is the ultimate Club Car – retiring Driving Instructors could have that last spin showing new members heading for an autonomous world, what it was like in olden times – sure beats a rocker at the monthly meeting!

Furthermore, in less than five years, BMW expects to be fully into the autonomous driving electrical car arena as indicated by our other article. Perhaps Mr. Zen’s feeling zones will now move from the seat of the pants to what can be accomplished with effective gesturing or total connection to the Cloud.

As I write this, I am on a cruise ship in the South Pacific. I have talked to a number of fellow travellers all of whom have some version of both yesterday’s and today’s vehicles. No one wants to go backwards and yet there is this quiet uneasiness about learning about and trusting all this technology. It will be a different world and, as with all change, that which matters, will endure. In some ways I feel for the manufacturers – tail fins seemed so simple and now it is so easy to over gadget and disappoint.

All this carries heavy philosophical questions. Can a cop pull over an autonomous auto? Will such cars still have a Sport+ function? How does an autonomous car get a license? Will BMW offer attitude adjustment courses to Club members? Will anyone know the true meaning of dipstick? And - will Mr. Zen become an APP?

Your comments are most welcome …

Winter Driving School 2017This year’s Winter Driving School at Ghost Lake on Saturday, January

28th was packed. Much fun and driving education was had by the group, which included family members.

Unlike the frozen experience of last year, the above freezing temperatures created some wet and slick conditions. With it being so slippery, the drivers had to work hard at feeling for that limited traction - any little bite of grip was a bonus for those who really paid attention to their car’s ability to get traction. The ones that got it were sitting “in” and not “on” their driver’s seat. To drive well, one had to drive by the seat of their pants.

The other key element was when the car started drift or slide out of control. It was all about learning to find a place to focus on as a reference. Sight lines and looking way ahead were so very crucial.

Participants learned to look for snowy or scuffed ice patches to brake, turn, accelerate or help with the rotation of the car. Once again, looking way ahead, helped with planning and anticipating where to use a positive change of adhesion on the ice surface to one’s advantage.

Also, the benefits of studded tires on polished ice surfaces became very apparent. We tend to rely on AWD, but AWD, while it can help with acceleration, is of little advantage with low grip tires when negotiating turns and especially braking. A number of people with studded tires and those that took a spin in Gary Leadbetter’s studded-tire Subaru Outback quickly saw the advantage. Last year, it was a breeze driving on the shiny ice surface;

this year it took a lot more effort to hit your marks and studs made the difference!

There were many other stories … the overall feedback was that people enjoyed the school and learned a great deal about themselves and their cars despite some initial apprehensions.

A huge thank you must go out to the Southern Alberta SoloSport Club (SASC) who ran this school on our behalf. Reijo made a few trips out on the days leading up to the course to check on conditions. The SASC and half dozen instructors from BMWCSA / AADS added to the coaching experience. The road course (3 to 4 km long) was ideal and was very well designed to force drivers to continue to think, look way ahead, and plan their route. (We do regret that a few pylons were sacrificed in the making of this school.) Bruce Borstmayer, Brian DeBoeck and Gary Leadbetter did a wonderful job organizing our BMWCSA members. And - a special thanks to Heather Thompson - who not only rescued pylons and assisted in making sure all participants had equal driving time, but also became a pizza delivery person making the 3 km trip across Ghost Lake and into Cochrane. Participants consumed the much-appreciated pizzas while standing on the wind swept lake as the Chinook Arch continued to build. We left just before dusk far more confident in our driving skills and unfazed by the water encountered crossing Ghost Lake.

New BMW M550i xDrive with unique featuresWith the premiere of the new BMW 5 Series, BMW is introducing a

totally redesigned M Performance version with unique features not previ-ously seen in the M line. While there are the engine and suspension features and related improvements along with the aerodynamic styling expected in an M car, it is the addition of xDrive, front and rear electromechanical steering and a host of Driver Assistance and BMW Connected features that create a unique step change. The new BMW M550i xDrive can be classed as both a four-door sports car and the most dynamic business sedan around that sets the standard for its class blending supreme performance, precise driving dynamics and uncompromised everyday usability with cutting edge technology.

State-of-the-art high-performance engine melds power with efficiency.

The M Performance TwinPowerTurbo eight-cylinder unit has displacement of 4.4 liters and is equipped with two twin-scroll turbochargers, High Precision direct injection system, Valvetronic fully variable valve timing and Double-VANOS variable camshaft control. Provisional output is 340-kW/462 hp at 5,500 rpm with projected fuel consumption (combined City and Country) of 8.9-9.2/100 km (about 31 MPG Imp). Peak torque is 650 Nm (479 Ib-ft) at 1800 rpm. This propels the BMW M550i xDrive from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.0 seconds, then on to an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph) while complying with the exacting EU6c emissions standard.

Steptronic Sport transmission and BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive.

Power transfer is handled by the Steptronic Sport eight-speed trans-mission, which plays a significant role in the superb dynamics of the BMW M550i xDrive. The M Performance configuration of the shift modes has been tailored to the characteristics of the V8 engine, with distinctly sporty gear changes and more instantaneous downshifts across the entire rev range. The Steptronic Sport transmission can also be operated using the shift paddles on the steering wheel. The transmission helps to cut fuel consumption and emissions thanks to its compact design, low weight and optimized efficiency.

The BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system in the BMW M550i xDrive splits drive power between all four wheels as the situation demands - intelligently and with a rear-wheel bias. BMW xDrive is thereby key to delivering two intrinsic elements of the trademark M Performance driving experience under all conditions: superlative driving performance and extremely precise handling. And when the adaptive M Sport suspension (lowered by 10 millimeters) is added to the equation, along with either the standard 19-inch M light-alloy wheels or the optional 20-inch light-alloy wheels (both painted

in the exclusive Cerium Grey metallic matt finish), the result is tremendous handling stability and optimum traction.

In addition, the power steering with M-specific responses in the SPORT and SPORT + settings serves to highlight the crisp handling and precise driving properties. Steering commands are executed with pinpoint accuracy and the driver receives the sort of feedback that guarantees immense driv-ing pleasure when powering along twisty roads. M Sport brakes with brake calipers in Blue metallic and M badging, combine outstanding stopping power with excellent feel.

Sporty looks with exclusive M Performance equipment features.

The M aerodynamic package, with an M rear spoiler with Gurney flap on the trunk lid, accentuates the sporty, dynamic lines of the new BMW 5 Series, while optimizing the airflow around and over the car. The exterior mirror caps, the kidney grille surround, the special M Performance bars on the front air intake and the two Air Breathers at the sides all sport the exclusive Cerium Grey metallic finish, while the high-gloss Shadow Line trim around the windows gives added impact to the dynamic business sedan’s sporty appearance. An M sports exhaust system - with exclusive tailpipe embellishers in Black chrome on the left and right - is responsible for pro-ducing the unmistakable BMW M sound.

Illuminated door sills bearing the inscription “M550i xDrive” beckon passengers into the interior, where M sports seats, the latest version of the M sports steering wheel, M design floor mats and special interior trim strips and pedals made from aluminum combine to create the aura of sporting exclusivity that is a hallmark of all BMW M Performance Automobiles.

Driver assistance systems take the hard work out of routine tasks.

Just like the other models in the latest-generation BMW 5 Series line-up, the BMW M550i xDrive also offers a wider choice of assistance systems to help the driver, if desired. These include an evasion aid, crossing traf-fic warning system and active Lane Change Warning, which uses steering inputs to avert an impending collision. The optionally available Active Cruise Control (ACC) and Lane Keeping Assistant now feature extended function-ality. And Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, which allows speed limits to be automatically imported into the cruise control system, likewise represents another step along the road to automated driving for the BMW M550i xDrive.

Forging an even closer link between man, machine and the outside world.

The latest generation of the BMW 5 Series enables close-knit connectiv-ity between the driver, vehicle and outside world thanks to BMW Connected. This new system links up devices such as smartphones, smartwatches, com-puters and tablets, as well as the vehicle’s navigation system, via the BMW servers. This, then, is highly intelligent technology. Indeed, it is capable of identifying movement patterns as well as personal preferences, turning it into a de facto personal mobility manager that helps users to overcome with ease the increasingly complex challenges of day-to-day mobility. Before the journey has even started, BMW Connected automatically factors in Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI) for route-planning purposes, and recom-mends departing earlier if a detour has to be made due to traffic hold-ups. And although BMW Connected uses the vehicle’s location as the basis for calculating the route in the usual way, it takes the

BMW driver’s whereabouts into account too. The new system also merges the functions and services of the familiar BMW Remote app and BMW Connected app. Plus, users are able to access products such as ParkNow for digitized reservation and payment of parking spaces, not to mention the intelligent On-Street Parking Information feature, which identi-fies the areas of a town where drivers are most likely to find a free parking spot. And if the optional Remote Parking system is specified, the BMW 5 Series Sedan can be maneuvered into even the tightest spaces from outside the vehicle with the help of the car key. Last but not least, once the car has been parked, BMW Connected helps to guide users to their final destination on foot.

Sportiness and everyday usability in perfect harmony.

The BMW M Performance Automobiles slot in between the top-of-the-range standard BMW models and the core M models built for maximum performance.

“We develop the BMW M Performance Automobiles for customers who are seeking very sporty driving characteristics yet do not wish to sacrifice any of their BMW’s everyday practicality,” explains Frank van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH.

“The experience and expertise garnered by BMW M in the world of motor sport and the development of high-performance sports cars are also channeled into the development of our BMW M Performance Automobiles. When you take a look at the BMW AG model portfolio, you will notice that not every model series includes a BMW M Performance Automobile. We will expand our product range wisely and close any gaps in the line-up strategically.”

The model portfolio currently comprises the 3-door BMW M 140i, 3-door BMW M 140i xDrive, 5 door BMW M 140i, 5-door BMW M 140i xDrive, BMW M240i Coupe, BMW M240i xDrive Coupe, BMW M240i Convertible, BMW M240i xDrive Convertible, BMW M550d xDrive Touring, BMW X4 M40i, BMW X5 M50d, BMW X6 M50d and BMW M760Li xDrive.

The new BMW M550i xDrive is scheduled to join the existing model line-up in March 2017.

New development centre for autonomous drivingBMW Group combines expertise in Munich’s Unterschleissheim.

The BMW iNEXT is scheduled for release in 2021 - self-driving, electric and fully connected. A whole range of highly automated models from all BMW Group brands are set to follow. To achieve this aim, BMW is pooling its development expertise in vehicle connectivity and automated driving ,currently distributed across several different locations, at a new campus in Unterschleissheim near Munich. More than 2,000 employees will work on the next steps towards fully automated driving, from software development to road testing, at the new location.

Agility is seen as a core competence. New forms of collaboration are key - small teams of specialists with a high level of individual decision-making authority for rapid response and collaboration across the company are needed for success. The new work structures will be characterized by agile teams and short distances - and, above all, short decision making

processes. At the new campus, software developers will be able to take the code they have just written across the way for testing in an actual vehicle.

BMW expects that by combining the advantages of a start-up, such as flexibility and speed, with those of an established company, like process security and industrialization expertise, will enable launching the BMW iNEXT, the first self-driving BMW, onto the market in 2021. The BMW Group aims to start testing highly automated vehicles in the urban environment, in Munich, as early as 2017.

The BMW Group currently employs around 600 people in development of highly automated driving. The majority are software developers - and their number is increasing. “We still do our own programming here and are responsible for implementing our own ideas,” explains Andre Muller, a software developer in the autonomous driving team. “We use the latest technologies, such as ROS (Robot Operating System), and are able to see the results quickly and directly in the vehicle.” (Editor’s note: The Robot Operating System (ROS) is a set of software libraries and tools that help you build robot applications. ROS is open source and has drivers, state-of-the-art algorithms, and powerful developer tools.)

To advance this ambitious effort, BMW Group is looking for IT special-ists and software developers in the areas of artificial intelligence, machine learning and data analysis.

Motorsport passion in the business class: the new BMW 5 Series Sedan with BMW M Performance accessories. With model-specific accessory components, the sportiest and most innovative sedan in its segment offers made-to-measure dynamic performance and individualized athletic flair.

The new BMW 5 Series Sedan, the most athletic and innovative business sedan of its segment, goes on the road in February 2017. BMW M Performance accessories will be available for all variants of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. These components, developed especially for the new 5 Series, cover drive, suspension, aerodynamics and cockpit, enabling an individually tailored enhancement in terms of athletic visual style, agile driving response and sporty interior design.

For the 540i and 540i xDrive, a BMW M Performance Power and Sound Kit will be available which increases the output of the 6-cylinder engine by 15-kW/20 hp to 265-kW/360 hp and the maximum torque by 50 Nm to 500 Nm. This in turn increases response, sprint capacity and pulling power without in any way affecting fuel consumption and exhaust emission figures according to the EU test cycle. This additional power is combined with a matching silencer system that makes for a striking, sporty sound. Tailpipe trims are finished in chrome or carbon fibre.

There will also be a BMW M Performance silencer as a separate retrofit option for the 540i, 540i xDrive, 530i and 530i xDrive. In addition to powerful engine acoustics, the stainless steel sports silencer adds a visual accentuation at the rear of the vehicle, where it is combined with either circular or trapezoid tailpipe trims in chrome or carbon fibre, depending on the engine variant.

The BMW M Performance sports brake system offers optimized braking through a particularly high level of thermal resilience, thereby ensuring constant deceleration even in highly dynamic situations on the road. It includes inner vented, perforated, lightweight construction brake discs with 4-piston fixed caliper brakes made of aluminum on the front axle and single -piston floating caliper brakes on the rear axle. Their exclusive appearance is further enhanced in that the brake calipers are finished in red.

Suspension upgrades include 20-inch BMW M Performance light alloy wheels in a two ¬level, double-spoke design. The weight-optimized forged wheels are available entirely in the colour Orbit Grey as well as in a Bi-Color finish. An especially striking feature is the combination of milled elements and burnished finish on the edge of the rim. The two-colour wheels undergo a separate milling process after being finished in matt black, which means that the aluminum surface becomes visible again. The BMW M Performance light alloy wheels are combined with mixed tires in the sizes 245/35 R20 on the front axle and 275/30 R20 at the rear axle.

Model-specific BMW M Performance aerodynamic components are available to supplement the M sports package; an ex works option, and the M aerodynamics package, which is a retrofit option. The range includes attachment parts for the front bumper, a rear diffuser and a rear spoiler in carbon fibre finish. As supplementary features, there is also a choice of black

side sill attachments and - as an alternative to the carbon fibre version - a rear spoiler and rear diffuser made of polyurethane (PUR). The components made of the light high-tech material carbon fibre are elaborately crafted by hand.

The M Performance aerodynamics components not only highlight the car’s sporty appearance, they also optimize its drive response. Further visual highlights can be added in the form of BMW M Performance exterior mirror caps in carbon fibre, the black BMW M Performance radiator grille, black BMW M Performance bars for the brake air channels, side sill stickers with M Performance inscription and BMW M Performance accent strips.

For a racing-inspired cockpit ambience there is a BMW M Performance sports steering wheel in Alcantara with red central marking in the 12 o’clock position and silver-grey cross-stitch seam: this is expected to be available in summer 2017. The BMW M Performance sports steering is also combined with shift paddles in vehicles fitted with an 8-speed Steptronic sports transmission.

These products all form part of the Original BMW Accessories program offered through the BMW dealer network, the BMW sales subsidiaries and BMW Service Partners. All BMW M Performance components comply with the uncompromising BMW Group quality standards in terms of materials, design and craftsmanship. Retrofitting these items has no impact whatsoever on the warranty terms as applicable to the vehicle in question.
