WELCOMEfrom the Producing Artistic Director

The Arden fi rst performed at the 80-seat Walnut Street Studio Theater starting in 1988. Two years later, we co-founded the 150-seat St. Stephen’s Alley. And in 1995, we made our move to this building in Old City, a move that transformed both this company and the neighborhood we are proud to call home.

Between our two stages--the Haas and Arcadia--we now have over 450 performances each season, reaching over 110,000 people. Not only did our move to this building inspire an expansion of our artistic vision, but it allowed us to launch new programs such as Arden Children’s Theatre, Arden Drama School, The Writers’ Room, and Arden First Fridays. This growth has necessitated a need for more space and, over the past two years, we have been taking steps to expand.

I am proud to announce that construction has begun on renovations for the Hamilton Family Arts Center, three doors down the street from our theater. This new facility will house seven classrooms, a spacious rehearsal hall, support space for our artisans, and an 80-seat studio theatre. Like the Walnut Street Studio Theatre where we fi rst performed, our studio theatre will also be used by new theater companies who are looking to make their mark on Philadelphia. The Hamilton Family Arts Center is a place for new companies, new plays, and new ideas. Construction will take place over the next six months and we will open our new building as part of the 25th Anniversary Season.

This season also marks the 15th anniversary of Arden Children’s Theatre. We bring the same artists, resources and artistic passion to our work for kids as we do to our plays for adults. For example, Grace Gonglewski played Barbara in August: Osage County (and will play Desiree in our upcoming A Little Night Music), but was also Chester the Cat in Bunnicula. Scott Greer, who will play Hamm in Samuel Beckett’s Endgame, was The Flea in our production of The Flea and the Professor (opposite Rob McClure who is currently receiving raves playing the title role in Chaplin on Broadway).

Our next Arden Children’s Theatre production is a new version of Cinderella – one that is great for both boys and girls and features a court musician by the name of Wolfgang Mozart. Trust me; there is no better way to introduce young kids to the power of live theatre. And if theatre in Philadelphia is going to continue to grow and fl ourish over the next 25 years, we need to make sure the next generation of artists and audiences are exposed to the very best we have to offer. If you have kids, grandkids, or want to be reminded what it’s like to be a kid, come check it out.

Thank you for joining us. Thank you for being part of the Arden.

P.S. The Hamilton Family Arts Center is one of several new performance spaces that are being created in this region. Theatre Horizon (theatrehorizon.org) has just opened a new 120-seat theatre in Norristown and The Philadelphia Live Arts Festival (livearts-fringe.org) is hoping to break ground later this year on renovations for their new building at the corner of Race Street and Columbus Boulevard. The arts in Philadelphia are continuing to thrive.

DIRECTOR’S Notes

Sitting down to write a director’s note is new for me. I have to admit that it is challenging to fi gure a way to write about something that I have been inside of now, intensely, for months. Trying to go back to the “why this play,” “why now” kind of questions at this point in the process is diffi cult. So, I think I will just say what it is about this play that affects me.

My fi rst experience with Freud’s Last Session happened in Summer Stock in Peterborough, New Hampshire in 2010. I was told I would be performing in a two-hander (meaning just two actors for you lay-

persons out there) surrounding a possible meeting between Sigmund Freud and C.S. Lewis. My fi rst thought was, “oh my, that sounds tedious.” Then I read the script and thought, “well, there’s actually something there.” And then the playing of it happened. That was when I was sold. Being in a room with an audience listening intently to this deep, surprising, moving, very funny and highly intellectual debate was nothing short of thrilling. This play gives us two of the greatest minds of the 20th century going toe to toe--one at the end of his life and the other just at the brink of his fame.

To be clear, THIS IS NOT just a debate about the existence of God, although it is a large part of the play. THIS IS a play about belief systems, faith, science, orthodontics, hydroce-phalic dwarves, history, search for truth, psychoanalysis, Joseph Pujole, sex, Mrs. Moore and sadomasochistic fantasies. Oh, and there’s blood. What more could one want?

Most importantly, to me, however, this play is an example of the power of deliberate thought. Too often, in this world of ours, choices are made blindly, rashly, with little regard to consequence or reason. Both Lewis (a confi rmed atheist until the late 1920’s) and Freud (raised Jewish and “dragged” to Catholic Church by his nanny) made thought their passion. They both came to their own conclusions through years of self analysis and discovery. If we all took the time to deliberate about things and consequently made decisions based on that act of that deliberation, what a glorious world we would live in.

It is also exhilarating, and surprising, to fi nd oneself agreeing with both of these men on so many different points. How nice to have two combatants in a debate that you respect. Both have strong arguments. Both have strong faith in their beliefs. That’s intoxicating. Hopefully, it will get you thinking.

Cheers

Ian Merrill Peakes

For two such different men, the atheist psychoanalyst and the theologian novelist sure do sound alike sometimes. See if you can tell who’s who:

_____ 8. “Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art…It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things that give value to survival.”

ES: Aside from the prospect of working with me, what frightens you most about working on Endgame?

JI: Well, Beckett is hugely puzzling to me. I love the language! It’s lush and funny and sharp, but the style of the language is also thick and strange. Typically in a script you look for the events, the through line, the structure you can hang your hat on. Endgame is just a cycle. These people are stuck both in this world and in their own skin. Finding my way into that makes me nervous on one hand but terrifically excited on the other. I’m also a huge fan of Scott Greer. Sharing the stage with someone I respect so much can be frightening...and also exciting.

SG: Not being able to use my eyes. Whether or not I can see through the glasses, neither the audience nor my fellow actors will be able to see my eyes. That scares me.

ES: Insofar as you can tell at this moment, does the play actually mean anything?

JI: The play is about relationships. Dependency. It’s about how we negotiate needing someone and being needed which I can relate too. I’m really very interested in father/son relationships the older I get. I find myself needing to hear from my father in a way I didn’t think I needed before. I keep thinking about that as I work on the play.

SG: It’ s easier to talk about what the play doesn’t mean. It is about so much: class, the nature of family, friendship, civilization, humanity...

ES: Beckett was once stabbed by a pimp. Has that ever happened to either of you?

JI: Uh...No.

SG: Not since lunch.

ES: One of you plays a character who can’t stand up, the other a character who can’t sit down. How do you see this affecting your respective careers?

JI: I feel it will require me to seek more dynamic and physical approaches to my work. The fact that I can’t sit means I live in a perpetual vertical state. Which to me says something about the character’s emotional state.

SG: I will seek an “armchair on casters” rider to every contract. It’ll be sweet.

ES: Scott, you are doing Yasmina Reza’s 80-minute, three character play Art in Florida right now, and James, you are doing Tony Kushner’s seven hour epic Angels In America here in Philadelphia. Who will be more ready to tackle Endgame?

JI: Well after doing seven hours of huge American epic theatre, that goes from New York to Antarctica to Heaven and back I cannot wait to work on something more contained. But the interior life of these character is so vast. That’s a hard one. I’m ready to tackle it! But who knows if I’m more ready.

SG: I’m not sure any show can prepare you for Endgame. I’ve never done anything like it.

Upping your EndgameThe Arden’s Associate Artistic Director Edward Sobel will be directing Samuel Beckett’s Endgame this season, with actors Scott Greer playing Hamm and James Ijames as Clov. Ed fired off some questions to Scott and James, and here are their responses. For inside information about the process of making

Endgame, check the Arden blog at http://ardentheatre.org/blog/labels/201213/endgame/

Page 13: Freud's Last Session stagebill

ES: Many scholars have cited among Beckett’s influences, his affection for vaudeville and silent-movie era comedies with the likes of Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin. Do you ever think of yourselves as little tramps?

JI: Every single day! Absolutely! This guy is a total little tramp. Though I think I probably dress better. Post-modern Little Tramp. I love keaton and Chaplin. They both were performers I have watched to learn about comedy and, strangely enough, tragedy.

SG: Yes. Yes, I do. I’ve been a fan of classic comedy disciplines all my life, and I’ve performed a lot of vintage vaudeville material in 1812’s Big Time shows. These rhythms are the foundation of all English-language comedy.

ES: The character Scott plays in Endgame is named Hamm. Many scholars argue that this is Beckett’s reference to the biblical figure Ham – Noah’s son who was cursed for seeing his father naked. Has that ever happened to either of you?

JI: I don’t ever remember seeing my father naked. Certainly have not been cursed.

SG: Speaking of Ham....

ES: Stuffed toy dogs and non-sequitors. Discuss.

JI: Oh yes...the stuffed toy dog. At least it’s not a chafing dish. Get it....that’s a non-sequitor...stuffed toy dog...chafing dish. Little...joke.

SG: Flounder.

ES: What do you love about Beckett?

JI: He challenges you! You will say things you will never say again. You can wait and wait and wait and wait and it never stops being riveting. I love his approach to comedy. It’s so dark. I really dig that.

SG: I love that he asks unsettling questions that challenge performers and audiences alike. And he’s funny. Very, very funny. The importance of that can’t be overstated when writing on the human condition.

WHY WE GIVECharlie and Mindy Goldberg Rose

The journey to “our Arden” began on two paths many years ago. Charlie had a long history in theatrical and musical arts, playing saxophone and clarinet and performing in high school and college musicals; Mindy was a devoted theatre-goer, with subscriptions to the Walnut Street Theatre and Annenberg. When we married in 1995, our joint theatre exploration began, subscribing to numerous theatres in the Philadelphia area and going to theatre in New York City and London when we could. We loved the entire experience of theatre-going, reading about the shows before seeing them, soaking in the atmosphere and experience at a show, discussing the shows among ourselves and friends, and deciding if we agreed with the reviews or not.

All of this was enjoyable, but what really grabbed us were the productions and entire environment of being at the Arden. We loved the early dinners in Old City with good friends, the provocative and engaging play choices, and the option of staying to meet the actors for a post-performance discussion. We became so thoroughly devoted to the Arden Theatre that we became charter members of the Sylvan Society. Besides believing in the goals and aspirations of the Arden, we have always enjoyed our interactions with Terry Nolen and Amy Murphy. Arden galas are exciting celebrations of the achievements of this growing theatre, and we twice won Arden cabaret evenings at our house with our favorite Philadelphia actors, Jeff Coon and Ben Dibble on the silent auction. Our young daughter Allison had loved the Arden Children’s Theatre productions as well, and as a college student became a summer intern at the Arden.

Charlie exclaimed one evening, “I want to be on this board. It will really be fun,” and a new era began for us. When asked to make a fi ve-year commitment to the capital campaign, the Fund for the Future, we were happy to support the rennovation of the Green Room and the Dressing Room. Now we are continuing a second fi ve-year commitment to the Hamilton Family Arts Center and look forward to its opening. Arden Theatre Company is realizing its dream of providing wonderful theatre, education and experiences to all ages. We are honored to be a part of this wonderful organization and look forward to many more years at “our Arden.”

Charlie and Mindy Goldberg Rose

The Hamilton Family Arts Center will be a place that celebrates kids, embraces new work, and invests in the vitality of the community. This building will provide the room to expand the Arden’s new play development work, create a permanent home for Arden Drama School, and increase opportunities for community partnerships. The Hamilton Family Arts Center is our investment in the future.

You can join in this dramatic expansion of the Arden! The $5.8 million campaign to fund this project is more than 60% complete. Your support will bring us one step closer to turning the vision for the Hamilton Family Arts Center into a reality.
