F R E Y A M A T H E W S

In this paper I propose to offer relatively novel interpretations of fourmain aspects of Spinoza's theory of substance. The paper willaccordingly unfold in four sections. In the first I shall specify theessence of substance, and show how this essence is manifested under theattribute of extension. In the second I shall argue that this same essencecan be manifested under the attribute of thought . It will then be possibleto explain how a single mode is manifested under two differentattributes, and how the 'essence' of the i dea is reflected in the i d e a t u r n .The third section deals with the thesis that to be thinking and extendedis to be perceived -- the thesis, in other words, that the attributes ofthought and extension are phenomenal. Lastly, in the fourth section, Iattempt to elucidate Spinoza's necessitarianism, and the status ofactuality in his theory o f substance.

I ~Spinoza defines substance as "that which is in itself and conceivedthrough itself" ( E t h i c s , I, Def.III*). Through this definition he capturesall that went into the Cartesian concept of substance, viz. that asubstance is that which can exist by itself, independently o f any otherthing. But Spinoza stretches the concept beyond this notion ofontological independence: substance is not only that which can e x i s tindependently of anything else, it is also that which can be c o n c e i v e dindependently of anything else. What can this mean? It must mean thatsubstance can be conceived in, anachronistically speaking, a prioriterms. Descartes had assumed that our acquaintance with bodies andminds was sufficient simply for us to s e e that they were mutuallyontologically independent. He assumed, in other words, that ouracquaintance with actual substances reveals to us that they are 'inthemselves'.

Spinoza is more ambitious. He wants his theory to be rich enough to
