Ord fra Presidenten Happy Anniversary, Sons of Norway!
Sons of Norway is celebrating its 125th Anniversary in 2020. January 16th was the official anniversary date. At our Lutefisk and Meatball Dinner held January 18th, I asked everyone to raise a glass to toast our congratulations. Thank you to all of our members for their continued support of the Sons of Norway organization as well as Freya Lodge. Gratulerer med 125 årsdagen!
Our District 6 meeting (convention) will be held in June in Mesa, Arizona. We will need to elect delegates to attend - Please contact me with nominations (yourself or another Freya member). We want to ensure that Freya Lodge is well represented.
Our Lutefisk and Meatball Dinner brought a smaller than usual crowd, but it appeared that a good time was had by all. We had delicious food, the lutefisk song (thanks to Jon Arild for leading us), a small raffle and the awarding of sports medals. Thanks to Sandra Smith for the pictures. Sincere thanks to those that helped out in any way and special thanks to those that pulled double duty – as an attendee and a volunteer! Congratulations to our first King & King of Lutefisk, the Otteson brothers who traveled up from the east bay to attend. David reported that it was the best lutefisk he has eaten - EVER!
Our February 8th Mystery Dinner has been replaced with a genealogy event. See the flyer on page 11. Siri Fenson and Carol Eber have worked wonders to bring this speaker and event to you. Please RSVP to Siri and plan to at-tend. It should be a fun and informative afternoon/evening. I hope to sched-ule the mystery dinner in the fall. Please let me know if you are interested in participating (as a “performer”). No memorization needed – you will just read along and play your part. I’ll need plenty of volunteers to make this happen.
Congratulations to Patricia Hansen on achieving Golden Membership status. Pat is the recipient of a certificate and special golden membership pin. She has earned this new status by attaining the age of 65 or older and has been a member in good standing for 30 years or more. Gratulerer, Pat!
Please let me know if there are programs or topics you would like us to pre-sent. We are planning a more youth-focused heritage event for Syttende mai. More information in the upcoming Forums.
Cheers to 125 years!

District 6 News
Delegates to the 2020 Convention It is time to select your lodge convention delegates. All lodge secretaries were sent their allowed num-ber of delegate. The election of delegates is found in Chapter 7 of the Charter and Constitution, sec-tion 4.7, page 45 of the 2018-2020 edition. When you elect delegates think of members who will rep-resent you at the district meeting. Choose delegates who will make sound decisions on behalf of your lodge and the District Lodge. Members who are aware of the Sons of Norway Charter and Constitu-tion. In addition you may want to consider members who actively participate in your lodge in leader-ship and volunteer positions. Those are the people who are in the know. Convention maybe a fun time, but it is business first and foremost. The decisions, discussions and interactions plot the future of Sons of Norway. Please send delegates. It is important for all lodges to participate. Fraternally, Luella Grangaard President District Six, Sons of Norway News about District Six Language and Heritage Camps for 2020

District Six Recreation Center Board positions open at next election.
The Camp Norge Board has four positions that are up for election at this June’s District Six convention in Mesa, Arizona.
Members of the Rec. Center Board are elected to four-year terms at each biennial district convention. To serve on the board you must be a member in good standing of Sons of Norway District Six. Mem-bers are expected to attend meetings on a regular basis and participate in board/camp activities and events whenever possible. Most in need are members who have a good attitude, enjoy the outdoors and have professional, managerial, financial or administrative experience, skills and knowledge.
The board meets in person approximately four times each year (not including the biennial meeting at convention). Meetings typically are convened at Camp Norge in Alta, CA, weather permitting. Other-wise they are held in locations near Alta. The board also holds occasional phone or web-based meetings.
The Rec. Center Board holds work party weekends approximately twice per year and board members are encouraged to attend and participate. This sometimes includes landscaping and other physical la-bor. However, board members are not required to meet certain physical requirements.
If you are interested in running for the board or would like more information you are encouraged to contact current board members, District Six officers, or Board President, Fred Hymans at (916) 412-3797 or email: [email protected].

Norwegian Vocabulary: 3 Untranslatable Words
Some words are easily translated from Norwegian to English—hund means dog, for instance, and ti means ten—but others, like these, have no English equivalents and can only be approximated. Kos(elig) — The warm, pleasant feeling of enjoying life’s simple pleasures with people you like. Although often translated as “nice” or “cozy,” these words only capture part of the spirit of kos. It may mean cuddling by a fire on a snowy day, but it can also mean running into an old friend, enjoying yourself at a party, or even spending some peaceful time alone. Dugnad — Roughly translated as “volunteering” but en-compassing so much more, a dugnad is a day when communities come together to participate voluntarily in unpaid work for a common cause. Dugnads may be orga-nized by neighborhoods, schools, sports teams, housing complexes or other groups to accomplish tasks that are necessary for the common good, such as outdoor work at the change of seasons. Takk for sist – Literally “thanks for the last time,” this is what you say upon encountering someone you haven’t seen in a while—whether that means it’s been a few days or a few decades. We welcome Lucinda and James Winkler to Freya Lodge.
Lucinda was born in Vallejo, CA. Her family is from the Midwest with roots going back to Scotland, England, Ireland, France, Portugal and Scandinavia. She graduated from Chico State University with a degree in Business Communications and has since then worked as an editor of a business magazine, as a reporter for the Sacramento Bee (as a “stringer”) and at JC Penney. As Jim’s and her children grew older, Lucinda got an AA degree in Nursery Production and worked in the Winkler family nursery business. She also has an AA degree in Floristry and specialized in wedding flowers while working at Coddingtown Florists.
Lucinda and Jim were married in 1978 and have lived in Sebastopol ever since. They have two children, Kristi and Clayton, and two grandchildren.
Lucinda finds time working with flowers, sewing, creating greeting cards, doing canning and making jams and jellies. Reading and travelling with her husband are other interests. She’s involved in the Order of the Eastern Star, P.E.O., Ladies of the Nile (Shriners), the Graton Community Club and as of last December, Sons of Norway.
Jim was born in Sebastopol. His great-grandfather was a ‘49er and the Winklers now live on the 100-year-old property that the great-grandfather bought with gold he had mined. Jim also has a bit of Scandinavian blood in him, besides Native American Indian and southern Euro-pean. He has a Teacher’s Education Degree and taught for 35 years at El Molino High School where he also coached football and served as the school’s Athletic Director, besides teaching Auto Shop, Math, Computers and Science. Jim worked on the ranch all of his life – and still helping with the many projects "Lucinda finds for him".
Velkommen to Lucinda and Jim! We look forward to meeting you both.

Membership Update
Ron Stubbings, the International President of Sons of Norway, writes: “It is only fitting that as we begin our exiting 125th anniversary year, I have outstanding news to share with you. In 2019 you not only helped Sons of Norway reach the goal of 3,900 new members, set by the International Board, you blew past it. With 6,985 new members in 2019, we ended the year 53% above goal. Thanks to your support and enthusiasm. Freya Lodge is one of 112 lodges having met its goal”.
Our goal (based on number of members already on the books) was to recruit sixteen – WE TOOK IN 25! Thank you, “Freyans”, for helping to spread the word and encourage friends and family members to join.
SoN District Six (AZ, UT, CO, NV, CA) has 49 lodges; only two others: “Roald Amundsen” of Sacramento and “Fjellheim” of Colorado Springs, surpassed us.
Hip, hip, hurra!
