ABOUT SHORT, RECENT CV

Hi,my name is

Stefan25 years old.

Industrial designer.

Broadly oriented.

Open for challenges.

Ready for a professional career

You have to work hard to realise your dreams. You can learn anything, as long as you are enthusiastic about something. I would describe myself as a curious designer, adapting easy to new environments. Being driven by enthusiasm, I collaborated in several projects to gain working experience and when I’m not working for them, I always have my own projects at home to finish. I prefer working in a digital environment. My strength and preferences are coming from the detailed design phase. Finishing stuff, producing it, and seeing it work. If not, a new iteration phase starts at my digital drawing board. Perfectionism drives me to go on. Stopping at a certain point can be difficult, though beneficial for the quality of work. If I’m hooked on a topic, my intrinsic motivation keeps me, together with a cup of coffee, running for quite a long time.

My last project before officially becoming an engineer, was developing a product proposal for an adult helmet for EGG B.V. The competative feature of this product, is the development done based on 3D scanning techniques. An internal and external company analysis resulted in strengths & weaknesses. Next, an approach has been developed to determine the shape of an ‘ultimate fitting’ helmet’ amongst populations worldwide.

The project was twofold, because of the stakeholders involved like TU Delft (theoretical) and EGG (practical).

The scientific part of the project was about developing an algortihm for incorporating larger quantities of 3D scanning data in product design.

The main challenge was to automatically align scanning data in a meaningful way, extracting a sort of ‘envelope’ which describes an optimized inner helmet shape. The distribution was used to determine where the cushioning of the helmet should be placed

The practical part was a classical product design process. The main problem users have with helmets are the looks of it and the comfort. Therefore, besides the ‘ultimate fitting’ the looks are an important part as well.

The EGG3 is suitable for wintersports and street sports, and can be customized with skins, a skiclip, an action-cam mount and a winter-padding, to create a multi-season helmet. The project ended with a visual 1:1 prototype..

Designing, funding, building and driving a car with cutting edge technology in one year; It was great to play such a role in this pioneering team, writing history everyday.

For more than a year, I held one of the 9 board member functions in the biggest challenge I’ve ever faced. I was responsible for the outer body, aerodynamic properties regarding cooling and drag, and I was in charge of event managing. When I wanted to relax, I switched my work for some graphic design for the PR department. The team I led consisted of team of 8 people of different studies from the TU Delft. My task was to bring everything together and to produce it. Besides facilitating all the supplies for manufacturing, I teached people to design and work with composite materials. Keeping track of the planning was crucial, since there were tight schedules for manufacturing.

I gained a lot of expertise on creating producable parts, I saw over 20 fairs and events throughout Europe, I learned to manage a team, I created an actual piece in an incredible timeframe... But I also fell and stood up.

And that’s why I learned so, so much.

The challenge was to make a design for a mass-produced, interactive drinking glass for a research group at the TU Delft.

Since I was already interested in learning to work with electronics, this was the chance to step into the world of programming and hardware design and my task in the group covered the hardware and software design.

Since the size of the electronics was important, an own pcb design was made to hold a small form factor of a microcontroller, accelerometer, charging circuit, an RGB led and wireless module.

Soldering the SMD components by hand was a challenge though. In the end, 9 out of 10 PCB’s worked seamlessly and the project was displayed at the Dutch Design Week 2014.

Trends and developments were translated into a vision with the VIP-method. I wanted to develop a cultural accepted urban car in the fruitful environment of work and leisure vehicles. At this point the project went individual, and I started sketching solutions for urban transport. The final concept holds an inflatable child compartiment in the bac, and for ‘working purposes’ it is just a trunk.

In the spring of 2012, I had my bachelor degree ready and therefore I wanted to do something besides my study, to gain experience and to bridge the gap in my schedule.

Therefore, I joined the Forze Hydrogen Racing Team since they were looking for industrial designers to take a drawing into real FRP-parts.

I made the CAD file and the visual representations of the whole assembly, started to convert this design to producable molds... Which I never did before. After going to this process entirely, you start to see what could have been better, so the production would become easier. This was an eyeopener to me

The car competed as first hydrogen Formula Student racing car in the official FS United Kingdom at the Silverstone circuit, a race in the Czech republic, and the car is exhibited on more than 50 industrial fairs and big events right now, like the Hannover Messe and the Rotterdam City Racing.

The project I worked on at the end of 2014, was the last one before my graduation. In a team with different disciplines, I’m the one who is in charge of the digital development of an ergonomic chair, based on data gathered by 3D scanning.Under supervision of the client Pactics B.V., this chair and bag combination is currently under development. I was responsible for the scanning research, collecting and interpreting the data and constructing a valid and well-argued product out of ergonomic data.By projecting a grid of 120 points on the scanned data, the most optimal surface for seating throughout all the participants could be calculated.

At the Delft University of Technology, a lot of engineering is done. As an industrial designer, you know a little bit about a lot of topics since we will need that in future project teams.

Drawing is a skill which is really helpfull at this part. We learn to sketch really quickly to express shape, material and size. Difficult things which are hard to capture in words, can be visualized to make it more clear. I think these classes should be mandatory for any engineer.

Quick sketching, copic markers, perspective, underlayer, no ruler, highlights/shadows, presentation drawing, idea sketching

In my master, I tailored my elective courses to CAD, manufacturing and detailed design. One of the projects was the Makita drill design.

Based on a simple, 2D drawing, I created a full assembly of the whole project, which was animated and analysed on moldflow & finite element at last.

Since it was individual work, I could fully incorporate my favorite way of working here.

INDIVIDUAL WORK

Making use of the possibilities of 3D-printing was the subject. Difficult, freeform shapes, combined with an alien object, 3D printed within a limited volume, preferably, some moving parts.

I designed a planetary gear system which could run on a small DC motor. I used T-splines in combination with solid and surface modeling to come to the final part. The product was printed twice, and after taking away the support material around the gears, it rotated seamlessly.

start to understand the complexity of industrial design at a whole new level.

COFFEECoffee has always been my hot drink of choice. I’m addicted to increasing quality of this drink; I’m sometimes even roasting my own beans to get the freshest coffee as possible. It is great to be able to serve a nice cup of coffee to friends who are coming over and to tell them a good story about what you know about a small topic.

People throuw away consumer products as soon as the first problem emerges. Design for a certain lifecycle has become a increasingly important topic in product design.

In the lower segment of the consumer product market, savings are made on some very lifecycle-predictable parts, causing predictable failure after a certain amount of use. Products can be easily repaired, but often the products are disposed and a new one is bought. This consumerism really disappoints me as an industrial designer. In my opinion, products should be easy to disassemble to lengthen the lifetime of products, even though manufacturers can earn more if the consumer buys a new product.

SUSTAINABILITYMy sustainable way of designing is an immediate result of coffee machines: I own different professional coffeemakers which I saved from disposing at for example Marktplaats. By dismantling every single screw in the machine, I try to look for the weak point that caused leakage, shorts or just general breakdown. Besides design inspiration, by tearing down for example a fully automatic Saeco coffeemaker, you
