For close to seventy years, the PostGraduate Assembly (PGA), the annualmeeting of The New York State Society ofAnesthesiologists, has been a focal pointfor innovation and change in the medicalspecialty of anesthesiology. The PGA iscurrently one of the largest annualgatherings for anesthesiologists worldwide,and a premier international meeting, asover thirty percent of attendees travel fromoutside the United States.
We encourage participants to shareexperiences with fellow practitioners andscientists in the heart of New York City. Ourobjective is to provide an opportunity tointeract with other clinicians for the benefit of your patients, your practice, your graduatemedical education program and your research.Through your feedback and other sources, weidentify knowledge and practice gaps withinour specialty and address them through avariety of teaching techniques. We hope youfind a teaching method suitable to yourlearning style, and welcome your suggestions
for improvement.Teaching formatsinclude lectures,
interactive workshops, mini workshops,problem-based learning discussions, focussessions and poster presentations.
Scientific Panels address knowledge andpractice gaps chosen from a broad range oftopics relevant to the clinician. The sessionsinclude interactive discussions, during whichthe panel addresses audience questions andcomments.
Focus Sessions give in-depth coverage ofmore specific topics and pro/con debates oncontroversial issues that are of interest toselect audiences.
Hands-on Workshops, Mini Workshopsand Thoracic Symposium are close contactsessions with expert instructors. They are anopportunity to seek out in depth informationregarding a clinical competence.
Problem-Based Learning Discussions(PBLDs) are small group case discussions withexperienced clinicians. The goal of the PBLDsare to explore a specific clinical problem andlearn through close interaction between the
moderator and theparticipants.
The Resident Research Contest affordsyoung investigators an opportunity topresent their work to their peers at a majorinternational forum.
Scientific Exhibits, Poster Presentationsand Medically Challenging Case Reportsallow attendees to discuss the latest scientificprogress in the specialty of anesthesiology,and review interesting cases.
Technical Exhibits enable attendees toassess available drugs, devices, equipmentand services useful for their practice, andobtain further information from a multitudeof vendors.
Hospital Visits take place on Thursday, one day prior to the start of the PGA.Arrangements are made with New York Cityarea hospitals and medical schools to provideattendees with the opportunity to observethe facilities and equipment of majorinstitutions in New York City.
Social Events allow you and your guests, thechance to cap off intense days of learning, withmemorable evenings filled with Broadwayshows, the opera and the endless excitingrestaurants of New York City. Vision: The New York State Society of Anesthesiologists, Inc.(NYSSA) through its Committee on Continuing MedicalEducation and Remediation (CME&R) is an educationalorganization that is dedicated to enhancing the standardsand practice of the specialty by sponsoring quality, up-to-date and cutting-edge Continuing Medical Education (CME)activities designed to promote education, research andscientific investigations, and promoting quality patient careby improving competence, performance, and patientoutcomes, not only within the membership but alsonationwide and extending to the international community.In addition, this organization is committed to theremediation of anesthesiologists identified and referred bythe New York State Department of Health Office ofProfessional Medical Conduct.
Purpose: The goals and objectives of NYSSA’s CME&Rprogram are to:m Disseminate clinically useful, state-of-the-art, evidence-
based, continuing medical education information, as wellas basic and clinical scientific research data to clinicalpractitioners, students, and researchers in the field ofanesthesiology, pain management, critical care, and
anesthesia practice management.m Encourage and stimulate ongoing and new anesthesia-
related research projects that will enhance and advancethe specialty.
m Remain current in our knowledge of the direction the fieldof anesthesiology, pain management, critical care, andpractice management is following to be able to betterdevelop programs to meet these newly identified needs.
m Continually investigate and develop alternative methodsto determine the educational needs of the diverse healthcare professionals serviced by the CME&R NYSSA program.
m Comply with the Accreditation Council for ContinuingMedical Education’s (ACCME) new Updated AccreditationCriteria adopted in September 2006.
m Be supportive and institute remediation programs foranesthesiologists in need of remediation by continuing tobe the designated Clinical Remediation Organization inAnesthesiology for the New York State Department ofHealth Office of Professional Medical Conduct.
Content: The scope of the NYSSA’s CME&R program is toprovide a comprehensive integrated program designed toaddress the full spectrum of perioperative medicine,anesthetic management, pain management, critical care,and anesthesia practice management both in hospital andnon-hospital settings. Diverse educational aspects include,but are not limited to, perioperative evaluation, relief ofpain and suffering, support of physiologic homeostasis, andcardiopulmonary resuscitation. Also included are activitiesdesigned to enhance knowledge of the changing healthcaremarketplace and economic impact on the specialty ofanesthesiology. Activities are also designed to fulfillMaintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology (MOCA®)requirements of practicing anesthesiologists as required bythe American Board of Anesthesiology.
Target Audience: The educational program is designed toaddress the continuing medical education needs of healthcare professionals worldwide who are dedicated to thepractice of all aspects of the field of anesthesiology. Theseprograms will specifically meet the needs ofanesthesiologists and intensivists in clinical practice andacademia, physicians and PhD’s engaged in research,anesthesia residents and fellows, intensive care fellows,medical students, and individuals in the allied health careprofessions (certified nurse anesthetists, perioperative carenurses, anesthesia assistants, dentists, and respiratorytherapists).
Types of Activities & ProgramModalities: The educationalprogram is accomplished byconducting an annual sessionof the Post-GraduateAssembly in Anesthesiology(PGA) each year in New York.This meeting is the secondlargest annual anesthesiameeting in the country. Theprogram utilizes a wide rangeof educational platforms tomeet the needs of itsparticipants and to fulfill thegoals of the organization.Modalities include, but arenot limited to, large plenarydidactic sessions, interactivehands-on workshops, smallgroup problem-basedlearning discussions, smallinteractive focused groupdiscussions, simulationmodalities as well as scientificfree papers and exhibits. TheCommittee on CME&R of theNYSSA is committed toensuring the effectiveness ofits programs throughevaluations, focus groups,feedback and follow-up analysis of impact on learning andprofessional performance of its attendees. Additionalvenues and modalities will continuously be explored fortheir beneficial contribution to the learning process.
Expected Program Outcomes: The NYSSA Committee onCME&R expects that its participants will either: Improvetheir competence by increasing their fund of knowledgeand/or skill sets or
Improve their performance by applying their newly-acquired knowledge and/or skill sets in order to providequality and safe patient care. It is the belief of theCommittee on CME&R that by improving competence andperformance, patient outcomes will be improved. As theability to measure patient outcomes of our participantsbecome available, the Committee on CME&R will endeavorto utilize them to determine the impact of our CMEactivities on patient outcomes.
