JOHN COUTIS VISIT On Monday 12th February, we were lucky enough to have John Coutis visit our students to speak

about his life. He is an exceptional person. Born with a severe disability that rendered him a

double amputee, John defied medical opinion by refusing to die. Today he gets around on a

skateboard and travels the world inspiring people to block out the negatives and be the best

that they can be.

John spoke to our students from Years 7 through to 12 about tackling life head on and

accepting all the challenges that life throws at us, regardless of our circumstances. He inspired

many students and staff throughout the sessions, with a few tears shed listening to his

experiences with bullies and illnesses.

We hope to see John again during the year!

Ms Lisa Doherty

SRC Co-ordinator

From the

Principal’s Desk Dear Parents and Members of our School Community

It has been a busy two weeks since our last newsletter, with all of us getting back into the

routine of the school year.

Excursions

As the school year looks to get even busier just a quick reminder about excursion

permission notes. It is essential that students who intend to attend an excursion return the

original permission note to the front office prior to the excursion leaving. The school is

unable to accept hand written notes or verbal permission for student to attend excursions.

Students are always able to collect a spare permission note from the front office if

necessary.

If at any stage the cost of attending an excursion is posing a difficulty please do not

hesitate to contact the school to organise a payment plan, or student assistance. All

matters are dealt with in a confidential manner.

Year 7 and 8 Exhibitions

It is with excitement that we look forward to the first exhibitions of Year 7 project work. All

Year 7 students and teachers have been working hard in the first five weeks of the term on

the “Pieces of Me” project which will be exhibited at the end of Week 5. Year 8 students

will exhibited their first projects later in the term

Student Pick Up

To ensure the safety of all students and staff can I ask all parents and carers to pick up

students outside the school grounds, and not drive into the staff car park or bus bay. We

have a large number of buses that use our school as an interchange each day and the

volume of traffic is causing some concern at the moment.

Contact details

Can I ask that parents and carers ensure that contact details, including emergency

contacts, are up to date. It is essential that we are able to make contact with you when

necessary. If you need to update any details please collect a form from the front office.

I hope you have a great fortnight and I look forward to speaking with you in week six.

With my warmest regards

Kate Wootten

Deputy Principal Mr Riles, right, was

channelling David Attenborough, whilst

taking care of a European wasp’s nest that

had made its home on the school’s cricket

nets.

The herb garden near A Block is doing well

despite the summer heat. The school grounds

have benefitted from the recent rainfall during

the storms this week.

AROUND THE GROUNDS

From the Archives Ken Shambler, right, was the first foreman

cleaner, then Senior General Assistant at The

Canobolas High School from 1968—1982. He

packed the 1982 time capsule.

The copper capsule was made by Kevin Mitchell,

Industrial Arts Master.

The concrete, brickwork and statue construction

in which the capsule was housed, was

supervised by John Lonie, Special Master. The

time capsule was buried in A Block.

It was a terrific day at the Orange Aquatic Centre on Monday, 12th of February, where Canobolas Rural Technology High

School held their annual swimming carnival. With something for everyone, the program included main events for all age

groups, and concluded with some intense relay’s between the houses.

The new house captains: Jack Connors, Taneisha Burns, Lachlan Griffith, Ayla Frost, Callan Naden, Erin Naden, Jayden Zegula

and Caitlin White stepped up and showed their team spirit and led their teams with confidence.

Neutrons were able to achieve amazing triumph over the other teams, finishing the day with a massive 1560 points. Their

closest rival was Electrons on 1196 and were followed by Protons on 798 and Mesons on 650.

Some outstanding performances were recorded by individual swimmers with PB’s being broken throughout the day.

The CHPA group of 2018 embarked on their annual Testing and Induction camp on

Wednesday 14th February at Charles Sturt University, Bathurst. The camp ran for 3 days,

where students participated in a variety of activities. The camp kicked off with a

campus tour where students were shown the layout of the CSU Bathurst campus and

the main areas they would be accessing for the next few days. The CHPA students

were required to undergo a variety of different tests conducted by Dr Melissa Skein and

her exercise science staff of CSU and our local physiotherapists from Phyzx, to see

where the students are at physically, and for the continuing athletes - how far they had

come since being in the program.

Some highlights from the camp included Laser Tag, Bootcamp with the Believe 2795

team, Ice Baths, Mount Panorama photo shoot, Vo2 Max testing and the academic

session. A big thank you to our Year 12 helpers Connie, Caitlin, Ayla and Sarah for

making sure everyone was well fed and hydrated over the three days.

Thankyou to Miss Somers, Miss Morrissey, Mr Skein and Mrs Carter for all their hard work in

organising and running the camp for our CHPA students.

It has been a very positive start to the year for the CHPA students, we look forward to

the year ahead.

STEM CENTRE NEWS

Do you like to play CHESS?

Then come to the STEM centre at lunchtime

and you can play a game on our large chess

board. On Wednesdays we will be running

a round robin chess tournament. There are

also checkers, Scrabble and Monopoly

games to play as well.

Today, Philip Donato, MP, Member for Orange, visited the Canobolas STEM Centre to learn

about our STEM Program and our role as one of the seven NSW Department of Education STEM

Action Schools. Year 7 STEM have been learning about water pollution through the ‘Murray

River Story’. Substitute pollutants such as soy sauce (motor oil) and blue food dye (pesticides)

are added to clean water as it flows down the Murray. Students measure how polluted it

becomes using a Lego EV3 light meter, and learn the purpose of the water cleaners they will

make prototypes of later this term.

Thanks Mr Donato for the interest you have shown and the support you give our program.

NEW BOOKS IN THE STEM CENTRE

FEATURE BOOK

Alex has been sent from Sydney to

stay with her aunt in a small coastal

town to finish her final year of

school. She feels like a fish out of

water, so she spends her savings on

an old yacht, Indigo Blue, and

throws herself into restoring it. But

when Alex meets the sailmaker’s

apprentice, Sam, she feels an

immediate attraction and can’t help

but be captured by his mysterious

ways. The author is Jessica Watson, a

young, record-breaking Australian

sailor.

books out on

Books stand

in the STEM

centre.

During the holidays C7 has had a makeover to

accommodate the new senior study room. The room

now known as the FOCUS (Focus On Choices Using

Studies) provides an accommodating and relaxing

learning environment. The room primarily used by

Senior Students with a study period will be a hub for

teacher communication and student directed

learning. Maintained by Mrs Bunworth (Senior Study

Mentor), organisation and study goal setting is a focus

within the room. Mrs Bunworth will also be working with

individual students on assessments, study patterns and

wellbeing.

SCHOOL NOTICES

Assisted School Transport Officers Anson Street School has many students who access the Assisted School Transport run by the

Department of Education through Wollongong. Some of the students need assistance on the buses or

taxis when travelling to and from school. There are a few people who work the shifts however, many

places are still available. If you are interested, please see the information below.

Expression of interest for Assisted Travel Support Officer (ATSO) positions

The Assisted School Travel Program (ASTP) often provides additional support to students with disabilities

on transport. Assisted Travel Support Officers (ATSOs) support students with complex health or

over, physically able, have good communication skills, be respectful and understanding of students with

disability, and be able to work collaboratively with others.

If you are interested in temporary part-time work as an ATSO the following website contains information

on how to apply for this position.
