The accompanying staff and ski instructors, to whom I am very grateful for their hard work, have made clear what a pleasure it was to spend time with our students, who were polite, courteous and determined to give everything a go; they were great ambassadors for Rosebery. Before half term I wrote in this newsletter how successful Rag Week had been. After the final count, we have now been able to send a donation of £5570 to the Meningitis Research Trust in memory of Natalie. I am very proud of our Sixth Form Leadership Team of Freya Selman, Kelly Owusu, Samaiyah Sultana, Izzy Murphy, Em Anderson and Mary Prescott who, ably supported by the Prefect Team, organised such a great week of fundraising and to everyone who contributed to help them achieve such an impressive sum. We also held our elections for the Junior Leadership Team before half term. All candidates had presented so impressively; it was therefore no surprise then that it was a very close contest. The new Year 7 leaders for this year are: Amber Elbishlawi, Sophie Benson, Megan Cole and Arren Al Hyssat. In Year 8 joining Holly Payne and Holly Coulson are Daisy Hawken and Phoebe Hogg and in Year 9 joining Esme Spencer and Sophie Rose are Emma Knezevic and Victoria Jetten. Finally in Year 10, Anna Elphick, Holly Fennell, Hannah Lee and Mutsa Dhliwayo join Freya Hawken and Ciara Sirkett. The team will meet shortly to determine how they would like to begin working towards their community, inclusion and student well-being priorities. A reminder to parents of Year 11 students to let us know whether you intend to attend our Revision Information Evening which will be held on 1 March 2016 at 6.30. Please email [email protected] if you are coming along so that we can ensure that we plan the right venue for the event. We also hope to see many of you at the PSA Quiz Night on 4 March; huge thanks to the team behind this very important fundraiser. Finally, I can confirm, for the fourth year in a row, that we have received notification from the Department of Education that we are one of the top 100 performing non selective state schools in the country for our GCSE results. I hope that everyone in the Rosebery community will feel great pride in this achievement, which is a testament to the relentless efforts of students, staff and parents. I include the letter from Nick Gibb, Minister of State for Schools, in this newsletter on page 5. He also highlights how we are in the top 100 schools for the percentage of students achieving the English Baccalaureate, demonstrating again the Government’s emphasis on this range of subjects which they believe ‘provides a strong basis for (students’) further education and employment’. Have a lovely weekend. Ros Allen@RoseberyHT

World Book Week

Next week is World Book Week and the English Department have organised various competitions and activities for students to take part in, including:

Book selfies - for this, students and teachers alike will quite simply take a selfie of them reading a book in an unusual place; the most extravagant entry will win a prize.

We will also be running the renowned ‘decorate a door’ competition! For this, students are expected to decorate their Form Room door- this will run from 29 February until 4 March.

On Friday 4 March students and teachers are allowed to attend school in fancy dress! We ask that you bring a small donation of a pound if you wish to participate (to go towards the Library).

*NOTE FOR THE FANCY DRESS DAY! * It is important that students note this is NOT a mufti day! Hoodies and other casual clothing will not be permitted; you must make it very obvious that you have come dressed as someone from a book otherwise there will be consequences. The fancy dress day is a privilege and not mandatory so, if you do not wish to take part, you do not have to.

CAN YOU HELP?

Are you an employer or employee who may be able to offer one of our students a work

placement within your company?

With many employers now looking for experience, as well as academic achievements, work

placements have an increasing importance for students progressing into their chosen career.

Work experience gives students the opportunity to learn about the world of work, gain

employability skills, increase confidence and make them stand out on their personal statement

and CV.

Our Year 12 students are going out on work experience from 11 – 15 July 2016. If you feel that

you can offer some meaningful work experience to some of our students for them to put their

curriculum learning into practice, I would love to hear from you.

Please email me on [email protected]

Music Department News

Dates for the Diary:

Year 8 and 9 Concert Wednesday 2 March, 7pm – Drama Block

Leith Hill Music Festival (Rosebery Singers and Young Voices) Saturday 19 March – Dorking Halls

Spring Concert Tuesday 22 March, 7pm – School Hall (Poster above)

On Wednesday 2 March, the Year 8 and 9 Concert is an opportunity for those students to perform to parents and their

peers. This is open to all Year 8 and 9 students and there is a sign-up sheet in the Music Department Office.

On Saturday 19 March, the Rosebery Singers and Young Voices will be taking part in the Leith Hill Music Festival Youth

Day at the Dorking Halls. Two years ago, the Rosebery Singers won the mixed age youth choir class, achieving a

distinction for their performance. It is vital that we have all members of both choirs so we can give our best

performance again this year. Parents are welcome to come along and support.

The Spring Concert on Tuesday 22 March is an opportunity to see all of the department ensembles, including Rosebery

Singers, Orchestra, Young Voices, Junior Band, Big Band, and many more. Tickets will be available through ParentPay

after half-term.

I look forward to seeing you at some or all of these events.
