No.26 Friday 28th August, 2015

Dear Parents,

Being a parent in the 21st Century is demanding - pressing

work commitments and busy family schedules, and the

availability of and accessibility to electronic media and

the mixed messages it conveys to our children, are just

some of these. More often than not we find ourselves

feeling torn and worried about our children - questioning

the time we spend with them, striving to ensure that they

develop resilience and wondering how to best nurture

their development and growth into faith filled young

people confident of their ability to make a difference in

their world.

There is no such thing as the perfect parent or the

perfect family. It is not so much the amount of time that

we have to spend with our children but what we do with

that time. Nor is it the material possessions nor

opportunities that we can offer our children that

determine how successful we are as parents. It is rather

the relationship that we build with our children

throughout their lives that will have the most significant

impact on their development. If our children grow up in an

environment of encouragement, tolerance, acceptance,

and recognition they will be confident young people of

peace and hope. What greater contribution to society can

there be than this?

Dear God

We pray for all parents- that they may provide

loving homes and faithful teaching to their children.

Amen.

Leanne Nettleton Principal

During 2015, our school Religious Education

Formation Implementation is to focus on

displaying a deeper knowledge and

understanding of the sacraments and their

place in our Catholic faith and tradition.

Staff and students are also making links

between sacraments, scripture and Christian

living.

We are using the Lectio Divina strategy for

breaking open the scripture so that we not

only hear the message of the scripture but

also link it to the sacraments and interpret

the meaning for daily living. Students

encounter a variety of scripture in the

Sharing Our Story units, that require

students to engage in deep thinking about

the sacraments and how they relate to our

lives.

As a school we are also reading the Gospel

of Mark daily to enable the students to break

open the scripture, link it to the sacraments

and discuss questions related to it.

Listed below are the readings for Mark for

next week, which you might like to discuss

with them.

Student Workbooks will be coming home today

Today your children will be bringing home their

workbooks to share their learning with you. This is

an opportunity for you to encourage your child to do

his or her personal best. We encourage

you to write a comment to your child

in their book after their last piece of

work. Children really do enjoy reading

your comments. Additionally, we ask

that the books be returned promptly the next school

Ex-School Leaders of St Bernadette’s Congratulations to the following ex-School

It is wonderful to hear about our ex-students

continuing to excel in their leadership and

education. We congratulate them and wish them

well next year in the new leadership roles.

Book Week 2015 The theme for this year’s Book Week focused on how Book’s Light Up Our World. Through fostering a love of reading, we are encouraging our students to open up a wonderful world of: literature for discovery, literature for learning, literature for enjoyment and literature for appreciation. During the week, Years 4, 5 and 6 met with Geoffrey McSkimming, poet and author of the new popular mystery series Phyllis Wong. Our younger students in Years K-3, used their imaginations and enjoyed watching a puppet show based on the Aboriginal Dreamtime story of Tiddalick. Each year the Premier of New South Wales challenges students from Kindergarten to Year 9 to engage their imagination, expand their vocabulary and widen their horizons by reading a vast range of texts. Congratulations to all of the students who have completed this year’s Premier’s Reading Challenge. On behalf of the students, teachers and school community, I would like to thank Mrs Gaye Crammond for arranging and coordinating these two wonderful celebrations of reading. Social Skill: Weeks 7 & 8

Being a Problem Solver at St. Bernadette’s

Problem solving is a tool, a skill and a process. It is a tool because it can help you solve an

immediate problem or to achieve a goal. It is a skill because once you have learnt it, you can use it

repeatedly, like the ability to ride a bicycle, add numbers or speak a language.

At St. Bernadette’s we encourage the students to use a range of thinking skills, plan and carry out

investigations, consider different strategies, find things out before making decisions and solve a

variety of problems at school and at home.

Teaching children to become effective thinkers is recognised as an important goal of education.

For students to function successfully in a highly technical society , they must be equipped with

lifelong learning and thinking skills necessary to process information in an ever-changing world.

Family Discussion Starters

What has been the hardest problem you have ever solved? How did you solve it? What do you do when a problem is frustrating and you can’t seem to solve it?
