Dear Parents, Thank you for reading this Newsletter. End of the SST Academic Year: Friday 28th November SST began their Term 10 days before TIS and fittingly conclude their Term and Academic Year today with a special End of Year Presentation. Excellent National Exam Results have been declared this week; more details elsewhere in the Newsletter. It has been a joy to get to know pupils and staff of SST; so much is achieved in this section of the School which is so well led by Pn. Lee, ably supported by Deputies Pn. Tsai, Pn. Saw, and a dedicated Staff Team. A long holiday, until Wednesday 7th January, is so thoroughly deserved. Early Years’ Special Production: Magic Dust Thank you to Miss Charlotte and the Early Years Team for today’s delightful end of term production. Well done children, and thank you parents for your support. Last week’s Prom Congratulations to pupils from both TIS, and for the first time SST, who arranged such a magnificent evening in the Sheraton Hotel. Accompanying Staff were able to join in the special ambiance of the evening rather than needing to supervise the whole occasion, such was the superlative behaviour from all those attending. A special Tenby event indeed! Well done Aleena ………. {Year 11} and her organising Committee, and thank you Tom Robinson for ‘facilitating’. A busy Saturday for Primary Last Saturday the KLISS Swimming Gala took place, hosted by Tenby SEP. Well done to all competitors, thank you to parents who supported, and a special thank you to those parents who organised the sale of delicious home-made cakes, and other refreshment. Thank you the PE Department and support staff which made sure the whole morning’s races moved at a great pace……………..both in and out of the water; indeed the Gala concluded with 106 races contested, one hour early. Another special Tenby event. There was also a Mathematics Olympiad Challenge at SJK School in which Tenby SEP Primary Pupils excelled. Duke of Edinburgh Field Trip Weekend Last weekend Head of Sixth Form Janet Clayton, and Andrew Mellor along with over 20 pupils gained First Aid Certificates in readiness for this weekend’s Field Trip. Thank you to the staff and pupils for literally ‘going the extra mile’. Pantomime next Wednesday 3rd December & Thursday 4th December Staff and a ‘cast of thousands’ both from TIS and SST have been rehearsing long and hard for several weeks; it promises to be another special Tenby occasion. Please see details elsewhere in this Newsletter. Good luck and thank you to all involved. School Traffic flow………….but beware next week! The flow of traffic has dramatically improved throughout the Term, without any wheel clamping……….yet. THANK YOU to all parents/drivers for observing requests about parking, staggering collection times, and driving carefully around the School site. Numbers of cars should be less next week with SST on holiday, but with CCA’s stopping today, please can TIS Parents still consider staggering collection times, ask children to use the Library to read, use the approach Car Park to School etc.etc.to avoid unnecessary traffic jams. Please ‘think out of the box’. Getting better all the time……………….. Is Tenby SEP getting better all the time? What measurements or statistics can the School use to verify this statement. Naturally high academic standards and high expectations are of great importance. An emphasis on the arts, music, sport and extra-curricular activity gives pupils the opportunity to develop an all rounded personality. Personal Health Education is crucial to a child’s development. However, an important aspect of life at Tenby is one of service and care for others. There have been trips to Cambodia to help in villages, weekly visits from children in the Klang orphanage, next Term’s Charity Fair and Parents & Staff Charity Ball, the wonderful Eco projects from SST, and many other initiatives. If the attitude of the Tenby community is developing an awareness all the time of what we can do for others, both inside and outside our community, then most certainly yes – the School is getting better all the time, and long may it continue to do so. The January Term begins on Wednesday 7th January and the next Newsletter will be on Friday 16th January There will be special Induction arrangements for SST new pupils on Monday 5th January, and TIS new pupils on Tuesday 6th January, but the new Term for both TIS and SST begins on Wednesday 7th January 2015. I will be returning to celebrate Christmas and New Year with my family back in England. May I take this opportunity of wishing you a happy, special time with your families over this festive period. Yoga The 4th Yoga Championship 2014 took place from 14th – 16th November in Seoul, Korea:

Fencing Congratulations again to Philippa 6E who won:

Bronze medal for the Girl's Foil Fencing Under 12 in Selangor Youth Fencing Open 2014 held at Tunku Abdul Rahman University College, Malaysia on 15th November 2014.

Bronze medal in the Fencing Under 12 Girl's Individual Foil in the National U12 Grand Prix 2 which was held the National Sports Council at Bukit Jalil on 22 November.

KLISS Primary Swimming Meet

Last Saturday Tenby Schools played host to the annual Primary Kuala Lumpur International Sport Schools (KLISS) Swimming Meet. Our swimmers did very well to finish 3rd overall in the event. Also most of our swimmers managed to secure at least 2 medals each. It was an inspiring event for some of the swimmers who are already thinking of improving themselves for next year. We would like to thank our senior students, teachers, the nurses, IT, maintenance and the PE Department who gave up their Saturday to help make the event a success.

Also we would like to thank the Parents Association for setting up stores and bringing in Sid’s and Royal Post to sell food and beverages. Last but not least to our parents who came and supported the school and their children in swimming. We hope to see more swimmers next year and to be champions of the event.

KLISS Secondary Swimming Meet The KLISS Secondary Swimming Meet will be happening this weekend at Desa Park Clubhouse, Desa Park City. This event is organised by International School Parkcity which will be from 08:00hrs to 12:00hrs. Our swimmer will be competing in the Under 13 and 15 events. Come show your support if you are anywhere around the area.

Sunway International School Invitation Swimming Meet On 5th November, our school was invited to participate in the annual Sunway International Swimming Meet at Sunway University’s pool. We had to delay the meet for about an hour because of the rain and thunder storm. When it started, our swim team gave a tough fight and managed to win some medals. Jack won all his events in 50m Butterfly, 50m Freestyle and 100m Freestyle. Congratulations again to the team and also a big thank you for the parents that showed up to support. International School Association Conference (ISAC) will be organising their annual swimming meet at Alice Smith Secondary Campus in Equine Park, Sri Kembangan. Our primary swimmers will be competing on Friday, 5th December and secondary will be on Saturday, 6th December. The event will start at 08:00hrs and hopefully end by 13:00hrs. The selected swimmers are to make sure they check the notice board for their events and make sure they take a consent form to be filled by their parents and returned to Mr. Kenny by Monday 1st December. The forms are in the blue pocket files outside of the Multi Purpose Hall (MPH). A bus will be provided to transport our swimmers to and from the meet. The departure time is 06:15hrs and arriving back in school at 14:00hrs. Parents can also meet the team at the venue if they are coming along. Cross Country Tenby has managed to put its mark on KLISS yet again. This time in the cross

Korky Paul’s Visit

On Thursday 6th of November, an illustrator visited

Tenby Schools, Setia Eco Park. His name was

Korky Paul and his real name is Hamish Vigne

Christie Paul. The year 4’s and standard 4’s came

for a special workshop with Korky Paul.

Firstly, he told us a story called Sir Scallywag and

the Golden Underpants then he taught us that we

need to use our imagination to draw creative pictures. Next, Korky asked two

students that have good spelling skills to spell

‘Worky Taul ‘on a drawing paper. When they

were done, Korky started drawing and asked

us what teeth, legs, colour and nose we want.

Soon, the ‘Worky Taul’ was done. Korky Paul

took a blue crayon and wrote his signature on

the paper and gave it to 4T. Later, Ms.Ong,

our art teacher gave all of us paper to draw.

I thought of a creature called ‘Chatter Box ‘it

looks like a real box. Everyone use crayons

and imagination to draw their creatures.

While we were drawing, Korky Paul came to

sign our papers. Once everyone was done,

Ms. Ong placed all the papers on the floor so

everyone can see each other’s drawings. We

had lots of fun together with Korky Paul but

he said that it was time to go but he said he

will be in the canteen if we want to buy books

and get Korky’s signature. At break time, lots

of students went to buy Korky’s illustrated books.

After they bought books, they lined up waiting patiently for Korky’s signature in

their books. When everyone left, Korky went

to the library for more people to buy books.

At the end of school, Korky sold and signed

books till everyone was happy.

And at 3:30, Korky said goodbye to every in

the library and went out and left. WHAT A

On Sunday November 16, 2014 at 11am, Tenby Schools Setia Eco Park held its

third and final coffee concert at the Saujana Hotel in Subang. Performers involved

included primary and secondary students, teachers and parents who were all

skilled in singing and playing the piano, violin, saxophone, guitar and surprisingly

the trombone! There was a wide range of repertoire performed at this concert

which included classical music and contemporary music.

The primary and secondary students started the first half of the concert by

delivering a magnificent performance that certainly raised the expectations.

However, there was one repertoire which stunned most of the audience, and that

was the primary student trombone player as not only did he hit all his notes at

correct pitch, he also did show much bravery for his age as he did not complain

when his name was called first to the stage. The first half of the concert ended by

Zoey of Year 11 who played Beethoven's Spring Sonata; the melodies played by

her managed to serenade the audience, ending the first half in a calm and peaceful

tune.

After a brief discussion between Mr Auster and

Mr Shen, they decided to proceed to the

second half of the concert which was led by

Christopher Chan of Year 12. He performed a

"mini" recital that consists of mixed repertoire

(Bach Adagio Violin Sonata in G Minor, Franck

Violin Sonata in A Major, Havanaise in E Major)

which lasted for 40 minutes. As these pieces

comprise a mixture of melancholic yet beautiful

harmonies which made the audiences' imaginations soar, it was said by Chris that

he was giggling while performing as he noticed the confused expressions of the

audience. As soon as he finished his last harmonic E note, there was an immediate

applause from the audience, marking the end of the recital.

2015 Booklists Booklists are now available in the school bookshop and parents can start buying the books from Monday 15th December onwards. “Frost Zone” in the making

29 students in Primary & Secondary participated in Artistes Workshops from as early as May till late November to stage a musical production called “Frost Zone” on Friday 28th November during our Superstar Awards Ceremony in MPH. These children are so versatile and confident after 20 weekly lessons of an hour each.

Thanks to all these parents who had supported us in this programme and we invite all parents to come around to see these capable children for themselves. During these last two weeks, some of the preparation and activities were captured to give you an overview of their hard work.

“Early Years Lovely Lunch Time Golden Rules”

Do you know our lunch time rules? They go like this:

First, we wash our hands properly

Next, we sanitise our hands.

In a line, we walk to the canteen accompanied by our teacher.

We sit on the bench and wait until our catering staff remove the food cover.

We use quiet voices while eating.

Lastly, we enjoy our hearty, healthy meal!

Malaysia Invitational Mathematics Olympiad (MIMO 2014)

Nicolas from 6N writes:

We went to the competition called MIMO (Malaysia International Mathematics

Olympiad) on 22nd – 23rd November in a school called SJK(C) Lick Hung. We were

against schools from Malaysia as far as Melaka, Johor, Perak and etc. Some

schools had up to over 50 students participating but our school had 20 brilliant

minds participating. Some of these schools were from overseas; China, Indonesia,

Taiwan, Thailand and Philippines. At first I almost lost hope because there were

over 70 schools and more than 800 students but I just kept telling myself “We can

do this. Just believe.”

When it was time for the competition, I got to my classroom which was Class 3A

and took my seat which was already pre-assigned to me. During the test we had

90 minutes for 25 questions in a solo based paper and 60 minutes for 10 questions

in a team based paper (middle primary or upper primary got different papers but

same amount of questions.) Me, Lucas, Wen Min and Jia Yue took the upper

primary paper and managed to get a silver trophy in team based and Jia Yue got

a silver in solo based some of the others managed to get bronze, silver some

managed to get GOLD!!

The actual competition day was on the 22nd November while the award ceremony

was on the 23rd November. I only attended on the competition day not the award

ceremony but I still had a lot of fun and that’s all that really smatters.

Our objective was to give the children exposure to competition conditions and

develop their teamwork and leadership skills. However, the children exceeded

our expectations by walking away with a plethora of medals:

MIMO 2014 - Below, Lucas from 6E recounts the event: I arrived at the MIMO 2014 destination a little bit late. I couldn’t see any of my friends anywhere and suddenly felt very, very nervous. There were people from so many other schools but I couldn’t see the distinctive uniform of Tenby anywhere. I gripped my pencil case as I walked through the endless crowd. As I reached a staircase, my mother told me I was to take the contest in room 3A, which was on the 1st floor. I said goodbye and climbed up the staircase. I turned my head left to right and then only saw my class. I quickly walked over to it and found a seating chart where my name and student ID was written on one of the tables that was on the chart. Only thing that was wrong was that I couldn’t picture where the front of the room was. I shrugged and went in and found my table right in the front on the right side. I saw that my fellow friend and team mate from Tenby was sitting right behind my

playing on his iPhone 5s. His name is Nicolas. I looked over his phone and saw

the game he was quietly playing. It was some sort of Candy Crush game. We

talked for about 5 minutes and then I remembered that it was his birthday on that

day. I said, “Happy Birthday!” and he replied with a “Thanks!” After some time, the

man on the loudspeaker informed us that the individual test would start at 9.30am.

I then thought to myself, “I guess I’m not so late then”. Soon, the invigilator from

our room gave us all each a gift bag and I curiously looked inside and saw a MIMO

t-shirt, an MIMO booklet and a biscuit.

An hour passed and then finally, the invigilator gave out the test paper. Then it was

2 minutes till the exam would start. I then became more nervous. When the bell

rang for us to start the exam, I quickly opened the question booklet and started on

the first question. It was already pretty tough. Little did I know that there was much,

much more to come! I answered the first four questions then looked at the fifth

one. “Gosh” I said to myself. “This is so hard!” The question wanted me to times

12345 x 34567 x 56789 and then find out the remainder when the answer is divided

by five! At first I thought it wasn’t so bad, then I realized that I was starting to get

confused. I got the answer for 12345 x 34567 then I started to times the result by

56789 then I found out that I was taking a lot more time than I had for one question

because if I continued doing that question, I wouldn’t finish the paper. So I skipped

that question. The next 3 questions was tough and I only did two out of the three.

When I got to question 9, the man on the loudspeaker announced that there was

a mistake in question number 8 for the middle primary level test.

“Oh gosh!” I said to myself. “This is really starting to get very hard now!” A few

questions I couldn’t answer I left blank. I glanced at my watch and saw I had around

45 minutes left. That 45 minutes was the longest, most dreadful 45 minutes of my

whole life so far. After I finished the last question, which I also didn’t put an answer

on, I saw that I had some time left, so I looked through the question booklet to try

and answer more questions, in which I succeeded in doing. From 11 questions left

blank, it shortened down to 5 or 6. Then the bell rang for us to stop. I breathed a

sigh of relief. A really, really big sigh. Now it was the team competition.

My group got together and started discussing. After a while, we got the paper for

the first 8 questions. We had to split the 8 questions so that each team member

had at least 1 question. We only had 10 minutes to discuss. We were like talking

rapidly and loudly over the time and sound in the room. After the time was up, we

went back to our tables and did our questions. After some time, we got the last two

questions and these two we could discuss and work together to find the answers.

I think we all did well and got the last two questions correct.

Once the competition ended, we jumped out of our seats to go out of the class

only to find out that it was not time to go yet. We had to wait until the bell rang for

us to be able to go out. Once the bell rang, we all rushed to the door and practically

flew down the stairs. It was Havoc with a capital H! I looked around for my sister

and when I found her, we went to find our mother. When my mother led us back

to our car, she asked us all about what happened.

In my opinion, this competition was a good experience. The tests might have been

hard, but at least I could say that I did the MIMO 2014 on the 22nd November!

News from Early Years’ Early Years is busy gearing up for their Christmas Assembly. The children are helping to decorate their classes and rehearsing for their upcoming Christmas Assembly. The Early Years’ team would like say a huge thank you to all the parent helpers who have been coming in to help out with the costumes.

Student Council Results Elections were held recently to appoint Student Councillors in both SST and TIS Primary. Candidates had to present their ideas to their peers, who then voted for the candidate of their choice. We are delighted to announce the winners below. The Student Council will start weekly meetings in Term 2 under the leadership of Ms. Kaswinee.

Allied Pickfords Art Competition Winners Announced Back in September, Allied Pickfords invited us to participate in an art competition to create images for their company calendar. The competition was open to all TIS Primary students and over 50 entries were submitted. We are delighted to announce that 3 of our children’s entries were selected for the calendar. Alexander 4E Year 6’s Super Cool Exit Point Year 6 have been learning about Weather and Climate throughout the world. They have been learning about the different climates our world has and how to predict and measure weather. They have been learning about how different types of weathers are created and the how they are dependent on where they are located on Earth.

Year 6 have learned how difficult it can be to survive in extreme weathers and climates and have learned how people and cultures have adapted to survive and thrive in extremes. As an Exit Point to this exciting topic,

so we did the next best thing and went to Snowalk, I-city.

TIS Secondary Art & Design

Art Trips in Term 1: Art Expo: On 26/09 we took our IGCSE and senior art students from SST to our annual visit at the Malaysia Art Expo, Matrade Centre KL. Within this exhibition our students gained exposure of international and local artwork. Paris: During the October half term, 02-08/10, we took 18 IGCSE art students from TIS to the most influential art capitol of the world, Paris. This unforgettable experience enabled our art students to view the most celebrated paintings from early renaissance artists, impressionist masters, and exciting modern artists. They were exposed to incredible paintings that shaped art history. We visited the prestigious art museums, The Lourve, Musse D’Orsay, L’Orangerie, Museum of Modern Art & the Pompidou Centre. Within the 5 day visit our students also gained a sense of the culture by visiting the famous sites of Paris, the famous artist’s square Monmatre, a walk up the famous Champs Elysee, a river boat tour up the River Seine and an unforgettable trip up the Eiffel Tower, on a crisp autumn day! It was an action packed visit of the city that fully inspired and enriched our art students. Following the success of this trip, we aim to take our IGCSE art students to Paris each October. Year 8 Trip, FRIM: On 18.11.14 we took our Year 8 art students for an enrichment trip to FRIM. Our students gained first-hand, xperience drawing direct from observation, studying nature. This challenging experience enabled our talented artists to explore all the elements of art that they have been studying within their art classes during Term 1.
