Dates for your Diary

The highlight of the last week was joining the World War 1 Battlefields trip to Ypres and The Somme on the long weekend with 60 of our students.

Such enrichment gives our students the opportunity to appreciate how our history, language and culture is inextricably linked to that of our neighbours. In a time where political trends have become more isolated, schools have an enormous role to play in educating young people about the importance of understanding, dignity and friendship between neigh-bours.

Our students were very well behaved and respectful, dignified and impressive. From my perspective, the most memorable moment of the trip was when three of our students presented a wreath at the Menin Gate in front of hundreds of people, whilst a choir sang in Flemish.

I think we all came back to the UK richer as a result of the visit.

The evening was completed with the handing out of two new awards; Firstly, the ‘Outdoor Adventure Achievement Awards’ which were handed out to students who have completed Ten Tors and/or Duke of Edinburgh Awards at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels. Finally, the ‘Outstanding contribution to CCC Life’ Award were awarded to students who continue to show outstanding commitment to a variety of opportunities on offer at Chulmleigh Community College.

The recipients of these in Year 10 and Year 11 for 2016-2017 were;

Well done to all students who have worked really hard over the year you all thoroughly deserve your awards and should be really proud of yourselves!

Sprummer Concert 2017 Report

What a lovely evening it was at the College on Thursday 4th May. A full hall of parents, staff and friends heard some fine performances from approximately eighty of the College’s young musicians. The Orchestra, Singers, Drummers and Jammin’ groups all shared the results of their weekly lunchtime rehearsals. There was a great variety of solos and smaller ensembles on violin, viola, flute, clarinet, oboe, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, guitar, bass guitar, piano, keyboard, drum-kit and voice from students in years 7 to 11.

The May concert is also when the very busy Year 11s give a final piece before getting heads down for GCSEs. Special mention to Toby Dennis and Jon Eaton for their amazing and entertaining self-composed piano duet Megalo-vania. Before the Beatles finale (With a Little Help from My Friends) the Music Commendations were awarded to musicians who have shown particular commitment throughout the year. The Platinum Awards (for five years of mu-sical life at the College) were given to Jon Eaton and Oscar Sutherland who, like all the departing Year 11s, will be sadly missed.
