Kelsall Hill (1) by Jon Lowe

Sims reigns victoriousInternational Event rider Paul Sims would seem to be living proof that men can indeed multitask.

During his 3-day campaign at Kelsall Hill Horse Trials, Sims appeared to be completely at ease whilst he juggled riding eight horses with sharing parental responsibilities for his 9 week old son Billy, exercising two terriers and wearinga papoose.

Mr Sims, we salute you!

Taking all of this in his stride, 29 year-old Paul still managed to be crowned as the winner of the Istanbul BBQ Chester Advanced Intermediate class for a second year running. Despite facing tough competition, Paul put up a sterling performance with Jolyon Chamber’s Mystic Million, to lay claim to the £1000 winner’s cheque.

Said Paul, who is based in Nantwich: “It’s lovely to win at a local event, the course rode very well and asked all the right questions. Mystic Million is a big horse but

he’s very balanced and amenable to ride - I’m really excited about his future.” Paul took over the ride on Mystic Million, a horse previously campaigned by Tyler Cassells, at the start of the season and this was only their second event together.

It was Emma Silman who took the runners up prize with her own Sillogue Cailiocht, whilst Kelsall Hill’s resident Event rider Michael Owen produced a respectable third place finish aboard his long-time campaigner The Highland Prince (Darcy). “This was Darcy’s 80th BE event and he felt better than ever. He has become much calmer in the dr essage phase and his suppleness has improved,” said Michael, who is Badminton-bound with Jane Jenning’s Bradeley Law (6th in the AI).

Jon Lowe continued...

“Kelsall hill is one of my favourite events and one that’s enjoyed by my family, owners and friends as

the viewing is fantastic. The climax to the AI is especially

exciting due to the reverse order show jumping […] the prize money

is greatly appreciated and encourages riders from further

afield to make the trip”.

Emma Silman, runner up in the AI with Sillogue Cailiocht

“Today was more like a 3-day format which Darcy is well used to; he’s fit and is showing no signs of slowing down. We know each other so well these days that competing him is like putting on an old pair of slippers!”

No errors from Mr Mulry Ben Hobday and Sallie Ryle’s ever-popular Mulry’s Error led the field in the Martin Collins Enterprises OI by being the only combination to add no further penalties to their first-phase score. The race for the runners up spot was hotly contested, with only cross-country time penalties separating the placings. A quicker trip across the country secured second place for Jodie Stokes with the 11-year-old Mister Maccondy, leaving Sarah Stretton and Highbury trailing in third postion.

Said Ben: “Mulry was a bit crackers in the dressage warm up, but luckily he settled during his test and then jumped fantastically. The cross country course posed enough questions but I decided to put my foot down and the risk paid off!”

This well-loved duo recently finished 6th in the Advanced class at Weston Park and they are thrilled to have received their Badminton call up.Good luck guys!

A trip worth makingThe long journey to Cheshire from her home in Leicestershire proved to be a trip worth making for Samantha Hobbs, as both of her rides finished with top-ten placings in Intermediate section L. Samantha, who first visited Kelsall Hill whilst working for Jeanette Brakewell, posted an impressive win aboard the home-bred mare Tresoke, whilst stablemate Tretawn finished in 8th place. “Kelsall Hill is a fixture that’s always firmly in my diary; it’s definitely an event worth traveling for! The courses are fantastic and it’s the first time this year that I haven’t needed to run on mud!” said Samantha, who has produced the 9 -year-old Tresoke from the beginning of her career.

Jon Lowe continued...

“Tresoke can be difficult and when I first started to work for Vin Jones at Preci Spark Ltd, I spent a week in hospital with broken ribs after a fall from her! It was a rocky start to our relationship but I think she’s got the ability to go all the way”.

Runner up Rosie Thomas was another force to be reckoned with in this section which was kindly sponsored by Equine 74. Riding Nicky Cooper’s Mhs Nebr aska and Stella Comment, Rosie occupied second and third positions (respectively) with just 0.5 of a penalty separating her rides - whilst her own Heat Wave, finished in 10th place.

The perfect going at Kelsall Hill, along with the outstanding cross-country courses designed by Captain Mark Phillips, attracted entries from world-

class riders such as Australia’s Andrew Hoy, GBR Team Silver Medalist Jeanette Brakewell and Badminton-bound rider Emily Gilruth. Visitors to this event enjoyed a varied schedule which included a parade by 2004 Grand National winner Amberleigh House. Kelsall Hill’s next British Eventing fixture will run from 23 – 25 September 2016.

Thank you to everyone!

The team at Kelsall Hill would like to say a huge thank you to all sponsors, competitors, volunteers

and officials at the April horse trials, we really appreciate all the help and support, without each

individuals efforts it just would not be possible!

Dan Thornicroft’s BE80(T) Blog #3

Hi Everyone,

Firstly, I would like to say a big thank you for all your support on the run up toKelsall Hill Horse Trials. Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out to be one of our best days but, WOW, what an amazing event this is! All credit to everyone involved. My adventure began on Thursday evening when I took full advantage of the BE80(T) cross country course walk hosted by BE Accredited Coach Sylvia Farmer (who came armed with her trusty wheel-o-meter!). Sylvia offered great advice about how to tackle each fence and ran through the fundamentals of how to use a stop watch. She also explained how to set your minute markers which was very useful.

The BIG day

So, the BIG day finally dawned and I had plenty of time to do my last minute prepping as our dressage test wasn’t till 13:50 pm. On reflection, I should’ve guessed that it was going to be a tough one when I came to do my stud holes and there were stones to pick out of every single one!

Once Dolly was plaited, we loaded up set off. Dolly prefers to sport a running plait as the tennis ball-sized efforts I create make her blonde locks look ridiculous apparently. On arrival we were met by the irrepressible Jeremy Summers - the all-dancing, all-prancing, all-singing car parking attendant – that man certainly has a real passion for

his work and where does he get so much energy from?!

Once we were parked up, I went off to pay my starting fee and to make one final cross country walk to see if what Sylvia had said the night before still made sense. The fences still looked as bright but in the amazing sun they looked qui te approachable; I was beginning to feel excited now!

Dan Thornicroft’s BE80(T) Blog #3

The final phase I just about found enough time for a cold, light refreshment (that might have contained hops) and then I went to watch a few rounds of show jumping.

As it happens this was a wise move, as I hadn’t noticed the existence of Fence 10 when I had walked the course on the previous evening!

I knew this would be the hardest phase for Dolly because of her napping. She much prefers the collecting ring to the main arena and, once she’s in it, she spends most of her time trying to leave!

With this in mind, I rode her as best as I could with plenty of contact.

Here is my step-by-step analysis of how things panned out:

Fences 1 & 2: We flew.

Fence 3: We had 2 run outs as it was near the collecting ring.

Once I got her going again, Fences 4 & 5 were a blur.

Fence 6: This was the Kelsall Hill themed double. The A element was fine, then Dolly tried to make a sharp exit at fence B but I managed to get her over it. (With hindsight, I do think that I skimmed the wing with my boot).

Fence 7: We breezed over.

Then, going past the collecting ring Dolly stopped and napped … and reared … and shoulder dropped…. and

And then the horrid sound of the elimination buzzer rang, just as we were about to getting going again.

Meet our Sponsors for April 2016

The walk of shame

It’s seemed a long walk back to that lorry park, especially when looking over to the beautiful Kelsall Hill cross country course and knowing that today was not going to be our day to set hoof on it.

But this is Team Double D, we won’t be giving up and we WILL get to that Blue Chip BE80(T) Final at Weston Park!

As for Dol ly, she is in the bad books with a strict no polo punishment programme whilst I am formulating my next plan of attack.

(All ideas welcome … in fact, please share them on my Facebook page:

‘Team Double D Eventing’)

I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in giving me this amazing opportunity to be a guest blogger fo r Kelsall Hill Horse Trials - especially their Press Officer Jon Lowe - it has been an amazing experience.

Until next time, keep your eyes peeled for me and the blonde bombshell!

Dan & Dolly
