Welcome to the Cowboy family LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT I Take advantage of your time as an Oklahoma State student, Hargis says.

Welcome to the begin-ning of what promises to be another great year

at Oklahoma State University.First Cowgirl Ann and I want to say a special welcome to the thousands of new students on our beautiful campus, including one of our largest freshman classes ever of more than 4,100. We are pleased you have chosen Okla-homa State.

As an OSU student, you can explore opportunities in virtually every field of study and enhance your education through research, honors courses and study abroad. And, we offer a host of academic services to help you stay on track to graduation and an OSU degree.

I encourage you to make the most of your time at OSU. Take advantage of all we have to offer, including nearly 500 student orga-nizations. Get involved in service and leadership. Learn and expand your understanding through the rich diversity of our campus. Enjoy the arts and cultural events. Cheer on the Cowboys and Cowgirls. Improve your health and well-being through an assortment of activities. OSU offers some-thing for everyone.

This special issue of the O’Colly introduces you to many of the Trends and Traditions that make OSU unique and keep alumni from around the world connected and committed to their alma mater. We have America’s Greatest Homecoming Celebra-tion. We are America’s Healthi-est Campus. We are America’s Brightest Orange. Students gather, engage and make lifetime friends at America’s most comprehensive student union. OSU is a special place!

As a premier land-grant uni-versity, Oklahoma State remains committed to its mission of teach-ing: research and outreach, which is the education of our students, performing essential research; and sharing both with our state and world.

This is a special year as we celebrate 125 years of deliver-ing on that mission. OSU was established on Christmas Day 1890. We will be recognizing this milestone throughout the academic year ahead.

The First Cowgirl and I hope to see you on campus. Work hard, have fun, be safe, have a great year and Go Pokes! Courtesy of OSU Communications

The Walk: About two hours before kickoff, OSU’s football team makes its way down Hester Street from the Atherton Hotel to Boone Pickens Stadium. With coach Mike Gundy at the front, OSU’s marching band and spirit squad lead the way as they rally the crowd for the upcoming game. The players, rounding out the walk, are able to give their final high-fives to the cheer-ing fans lining the street before entering the stadium.

Wave and Fight Songs: After a Cowboy touchdown or field goal, the band plays OSU’s Wav-ing Song, during which, fans in the crowd wave their hands from side to side. Similarly, fans rock up and down while clapping during OSU’s fight song, played several times during pregame festivities. Both customs create a visually appealing ripple effect in what is known as the “sea of orange.”

Walkaround: Part of Amer-ica’s Greatest Homecoming Celebration, Walkaround gives students and alumni the opportu-nity to see the effort of Oklaho-ma State’s Greek life leading up to homecoming. Fraternities and sororities pomp to design magni-ficient house decorations, putting them on display for Walkaround, the Friday evening before the homecoming football game.

Pistol Pete: A staple at every football game, Pistol Pete is the leader of all things school spirit. When he’s not shaking hands or posing for pictures with fans on the field, Pistol Pete can be seen leading the crowd in its popular O-S-U chant. Using his golf cart as an escort to the middle of the

field, Pistol Pete signals the start of the chant with a shot from his gun. Fans follow his lead, forming the three letters with their arms and ending with two hand pistols.

The Spirit Rider and Bul-let: The OSU marching band’s own mascot consists of a black

horse named Bullet and an ac-companying spirit rider. During pregame performances and af-ter a touchdown, Bullet gallops around the field while the spirit rider holds up an OSU flag. The Voice of the Cowboys, Larry Reece, readies the crowd for each run by warning “Here comes Bullet.”

Paddle People: The west end zone of Boone Pickens Stadium arguably holds the football team’s favorite group of fans and its opponents’ least. The Paddle People, as they are known, use wooden paddles during the game to increase the stadium’s noise by hitting them

against the field’s sidewalls. Recent rule changes in the Big 12 have prohibited the Paddle People from hitting the walls while the ball is in play, but the rhythmic pounding of the paddles remains a problem for visiting offenses.

Alma Mater: What started as a football tradition is now a part of nearly all OSU athletic programs. After a Cowboy win, players gather arm-in-arm in front of fans to sing the Alma Mater Hymn. During football season, the team assembles in the northwest corner of the field to join fans as they sway back and forth. The tradition has also expanded to away games, where players accompany the fans even in opponents’ stadiums.

Spirit Run: With the crowd counting down the final minutes of an OSU basketball game,

the spirit squad makes a final attempt at rallying the fans. During the under-8:00 timeout in the second half, a member of the spirit squad runs around the upper level of Gallagher-Iba Arena carrying an OSU flag. As the flag and runner pass, fans stand and start clapping to the spirit band’s rendition of “William Tell Overture.” When the flag finally makes it to center court, the spirit squad member stands and waves the flag as the song ends.

Dirty Curdy: Cazzan’s Dirty Curdy Hot Dog stand sets up near 4th Street Wednesday-Saturday and is open from 10 p.m.-2 a.m. It’s customary for students venturing down The Strip to grab a scrumptious snack. The line will be long, but it’s worth it.

Calf Fry: Each spring, thou-

sands gather at the Tumble-weed Dancehall for three nights of beer and Red Dirt music. Some have dubbed it “Christmas for rednecks and cowboys.” With Stillwater’s roots in Red Dirt, the festival displays the essence of the town and attracts people from all over the region. The Calf Fry experience is one of a kind.

Finals Week Pancakes: Finals can be tough, but free pancakes make those long study sessions much bet-ter. During finals week each semester, coaches and promi-nent university figures make an appearance behind the counter in the Student Union, flipping flapjacks for tired, hungry col-lege students. Don’t miss out on the free stack.

How to make your way into BPS and GIA A prime part of enjoying Okla-homa State is being a part of the game-day atmosphere.

The easiest way to do that is purchasing an All-Sports Pass for $250. Both OSU and NOC-Stillwater students can get an All-Sports Pass, which allows entrance into all ticketed OSU athletic events, at okstate.com by clicking “Students Tickets” under the “Tickets+” tab at the top of the page. Students can also purchase the All-Sports Pass in person at the Customer Service Center on the corner of Duck Street and Hall of Fame Avenue or the ticket of-fice in Gallagher-Iba Arena.

The All-Sports Pass pays for itself during football season alone. Season tickets to watch the Cow-boys in Boone Pickens Stadium

are available to the public for $500, while tickets for individual nonconference games cost $70 and tickets for individual Big 12 games cost $90, excluding OSU’s game against Oklahoma on Nov. 28. Individual tickets aren’t avail-able for Bedlam.

Season tickets for men’s basketball for seats in the 300 level of Gallagher-Iba Arena and general admission cost $199, with tickets in the 100 or 200 level costing $575. Women’s bas-ketball season tickets cost $140, and it’s $75 for wrestling season tickets.

However, an All-Sports Pass covers all three of these sports. Individual game and match prices are not yet available.
