Thunk of the Week:
Is there more future than past?
Friday 8 May
The council feels that the school lunches
have really improved, with the new
menus launched this term. They also had
ideas for new items of playground
equipment, as well as thoughts on
discipline and school rules.
This Saturday we are holding
our Wentworth Open Morning. This is
an opportunity for parents to look around our co-educational boarding
house and discuss the
various flexible boarding options. The
Open Morning is aimed primarily at J3
parents, but anyone is welcome. Please
come along to see what modern day
boarding is really like. Wentworth
House is behind Clifton School and
Nursery and Open House is between
11.00 am and 12 noon.
Our boarders are all taking part in the
Beverley 2k fun-run on Sunday, before
cheering on the St Peter's pupils who
will be running in the 10k event. Some
staff will be running the 10k event and I
will also be taking part to raise some
money.
Next Saturday, at the end of exam week,
we will be having a non-uniform day to
raise money for the Christian Aid Nepal
Disaster Fund. There is no dress theme
for this day, you'll be relieved to hear!
Children should bring a donation with
them to Roll Call on the Saturday
morning. I will be explaining about the
disaster to the children in assembly next
week, so that they have a much fuller
understanding.

I have just been to cast my vote at the
Polling Station in Clifton. In assembly last
week we looked at what the General
Election is, how it works, and the
importance of using your vote wisely.
We linked it into our School Value
'Hope', which will also form part of the
theme of tomorrow's assembly.
Tomorrow is the anniversary of VE Day
(Victory in Europe Day), marking 70 years since the end of the Second World
War in Europe and Mr Ferguson will
explain why it is such a momentous day
in our country's history.
Congratulations to the musicians who
played in yesterday's Informal Concert.
There was a wide range of instruments
and experience to enjoy. Well done
everyone.
Fourteen members of our Swim Squad
have qualified for the IAPS National
Swimming Finals, which take part in
Crawley on Saturday. My thanks to
Mr and Mrs Sunderland who will travel
with them. We wish Jack, Harry, Toby,
Joe, Ed, Hugo, Jennie, Yasmin, Grace,
Jasmine, Olivia, Will, Phoebe and
Phoebe, all the very best of luck.
I had an interesting
meeting with members of the School
Council yesterday lunchtime. We talked
through their ideas for school
improvements, taking forward the idea
of marginal gains; a focus for us as a
school this year.

I think we have all been moved by the media's coverage of the suffering of the people of Nepal. Current estimates are
that at least 6,000 people have died in the earthquake and a high percentage of buildings, particularly homes, have been
destroyed. With the fear of aftershocks and the monsoon due next month, the need for aid could not be more urgent.
In response to the sufferings of the Nepalese people, St Olave's will be having a non-uniform day on Saturday 16 May.
As so often with non-uniform days, pupils are asked to bring in £1 for the privilege of not wearing their uniform, though
all donations will be gratefully received. In support of our appeal Mr Falconer will be focusing on Nepal in his Friday
assembly and prayers will be said in chapel.
The money we collect will be forwarded as part of Christian Aid week.

Katie Bonner and Harry Jones
represented a St Olave’s/St Peter’s
team at The Mount School in this
prestigious national maths
competition. They did well during
the day and were finally placed 4th
overall. They demonstrated great
resilience and perseverance in the
face of some rather daunting
mathematical puzzles. Also working
collaboratively on many tasks they
showed their ability to work in a
team successfully with pupils they
did not know.

Save The Date
Change of Date
Due to a number of
circumstances, we are changing
the date planned for the
St Olave’s and Clifton Ball to Saturday 7 November.
It has been a busy few weeks in the music department with approximately 200 performances taking place during class
music lessons as part of our annual House Music event. It has been a real delight to hear such a diverse range of soloists
performing at all different stages of their musical development and doing so with such enthusiasm. I do not
under-estimate the courage this takes – for some pupils, to perform in front of their peers is pushing their experience
beyond their natural comfort zone so congratulations to you all! It is great to hear the progress our pupils are making
and to see so many taking up instruments for the first time.
The Informal Concert on Wednesday was another opportunity for pupils to perform for a small and friendly audience of
supporting parents and staff. Once again there were some memorable performances and I look forward to the final
Informal Concert due to take place on Wednesday 10 June.
We have just submitted our final entry for the Associated Board and Trinity music examinations in June (dates to be
confirmed). If your child has been entered for an exam, your support at home will be invaluable in the weeks leading up
to the exam itself. Listening to your child perform and gently coaxing them to practise their scales and sight reading, in
addition to their pieces, will help to ensure that they are fully prepared in all aspects of the syllabus. Tips and guidance
from visiting teachers, as to what and how to practise, can be found in the pupils’ notebooks and of course you can al-
ways contact us at school if you require specific advice.

This is a photograph of the Yorkshire Independent Schools’ Football
Association U13 representative team who participated in the Nationals
at the Shrewsbury Festival 2015. Cai participated in 6 out of the 8
games, The experience was a very positive one, staying with boys from
other Yorkshire schools and playing for a team managed by an
ex-professional footballer. Cai is hoping to be selected to play for
Yorkshire ISFA in future matches.

I am trying to collate names of all pupils, staff and parents
who are swimming in this year’s Great North Swim.
Would you please confirm by e-mail if you have entered and
please indicate if you wish to book seats on the coach which
will set off from school at 6.00am on the day. Family and
other supporters are welcome and we hope to be back at
school around 4.00pm
For those who have entered, Allerthorpe Lake is open and
very inviting!
The cost is £5 per swim or £3 if you are still a student.
(Adults can book 10 swims for £30)
If signing in as a student an adult must also sign in.
I will be at the lake from 6.00pm to 7.00pm every Monday
night until Monday 8 June. If anyone wishes to join me, just
turn up on the night. It is far easier and more social to swim
in a group.

Dear Parents
MICHAEL BLYTH – INDIVIDUAL SCHOOL PORTRAITS
I am delighted that leading portrait photographer Michael Blyth is going to visit us again in
the Summer Term.
Michael is scheduled to be here from the 18 - 20 May to take individual portraits of pupils.
Michael’s style is spontaneous and fun, his aim being to capture the essence of your child’s
character. He will work in the grounds of the school, to produce memorable and delightful
black and white photographs of your child. You can see examples of his images at
www.michaelblyth.co.uk/portraits
If you would like a portrait taken of your child at school, please complete the attached form
and return to school by the beginning of the summer term, along with payment (cheque
payable to Michael Blyth Photography) for £48 which covers the sitting fee plus your first
choice of photograph, (9 x 6 print in a signed mount). Michael is willing to photograph
siblings together, but this incurs a separate fee.
A range of images will be supplied online for your viewing, and will be available at £48 each
for a 9 x 6 print in a signed mount, with larger images and frames as an upgrade option. This
is, of course, more expensive than usual school photographs, but is a very different product,
and would normally cost much more at one of Michael’s private sittings. They do of course
make wonderful presents for grandparents and godparents.
This really is a great opportunity to get some very reasonably priced and wonderful portraits
of your child at such a formative time of their lives from a photographer with the very best
reputation. Many parents follow this with private family photo-sessions. These have proved
popular on previous visits, so much so that he has had to visit the area again in the summer.
He is already booked for some of his after-school time here; so do contact Michael directly
if you want to take one of the remaining spaces.
If you wish to speak to a member of Michael’s staff about his photography, please contact
them on 01747 830123.
Yours sincerely
Andy Falconer
