Kingdown School ‘A’ fought through a great two days of racing this weekend at the Brish Students Karng finals at Whilton Mill, Daventry, to eventually finish in fourth place - in Britain! Just over 2000 teams / 6000 students originally entered back in February, gradually qualifying through preliminary rounds, then regional finals to eventually compete against the best in Britain in the Naonal finals. Congratulaons as well to Kingdown B who also qualified for the Naonal Finals coming a very creditable 19th in the end. Kingdown School entered a revised, longer wheelbase version of their 2014 car for this year’s 2016 event. As ever, we experienced teething problems once the car was given full power on track. However these were soon traced back to a malfunconing engine kill switch and fuel flow issues. Once these were recfied, ‘Kingdown’ ran very reliably. Drivers Toby Heathcote and Iestyn Phillips drove very intelligently and smoothly to achieve ever increasing MPG figures, finishing the day with a very respectable 1814 Mpg. Well done again to all of the Eco-Marathon team for another successful year. Year 8 Students Plans for the Future

On Tuesday 28th June, all students in Year 8 took part in two careers education sessions designed to help them to start to think about their future plans. In the ‘What’s My Job?’ session, visitors from a wide range of different occupations came into school and were questioned by students, who aimed to try and guess their jobs.

The visitors then revealed what they do and explained what is involved, giving students insight into careers they may not have considered. In the ‘What Am I Good At?’ session, students reflected on the many skills, qualities and strengths they possess and how these might link to future career ideas.

These sessions are part of a wider programme of careers education delivered to students across all year groups.

School Physicist of the Year Award

Year 12 Physics student Eleanor Osborne has been awarded a ‘School Physicist of the Year’ award at a ceremony last week at the University of Bath. Eleanor was one of 10 winners from schools in the region, all of whom have been recognised for:

• The highest levels of academic achievement • Resilience• Commitment to physics study over an extended period of time• Being a role model to other students• Leadership in physics

The criteria for nomination are highly exacting, and we are delighted that Eleanor was one of the prize winners. Her award ceremony also included a fascinating lecture on the existence of galactic supermassive black holes.

We were all fascinated to see time lapse footage of stars near to the centre of the Milky Way orbiting the nearest black hole to Earth - real cutting-edge physics. Well done Eleanor – we’re all really proud of you!

London Academy of Music and Drama

In 2014, there were 3, then in 2015 there were 4 and this year 12!LAMDA examinations (London Academy of Music and Drama) were held this year at the beautiful setting of Hayesfield Upper School in Bath on Saturday 25th June. Joely Hudson (TwPH taking her second LAMDA examination), Abigail Green (WiML), Beth Benoit (LoBI), Charlotte Young (LoRS), Ellie Hopkins (WeGB), Grace Egginton (TwMT), Helena Blain (WiVY), Holly Shergold (MiBW), Katie Bourne (TwOT), Libby Salter (WeBY), Madeline Cooper (WeGB) and Molly Savva (MiSC) all took their exam. The girls have been working on their performance pieces since January. The exam involves 2 individual monologues, followed by a short question and answer on character and preparation. Candidates receive a qualification, certificate and written feedback from an officiated LAMDA examiner perfect for aspiring performers and looks great on your CV.

Portia Saer has continued to mentor Kingdown students preparing for the exam alongside achieving her own LAMDA qualifications outside of school. Despite lots of nervousness, they appeared one by one from their exam looking pleased with how it went! Comments from the students on their experiences and how the exam went will follow in September. LAMDA club runs from November to July 3-4pm in the Drama Studio. The day LAMDA will run in the next academic year will be confirmed in the autumn term club notifications.

If you have any queries or would like to ask any questions about joining next November, please ask.

Winners of the Languages Pop Competition!

Following on from our success earlier in the year at the Routes into Languages speaking competition and in the song competition last year, students at Kingdown have shown off their incredible language and musical skills once again by winning the 2016 Routes into Languages Pop Competition!

Many of you will have heard and voted for our Olympic-themed tune, Ensemble, and we are thrilled to announce that not only did we come fifth in the online viewers’ vote but the judges awarded Kingdown first place in the 11-14 age group, beating 41 entries from across the country.

A huge félicitations to Louis Watts, Jess Ryall, Kenzie Leckie, Rebecca Goodsman, Jane Taverner, Luke Pery-Jones and James McRoberts for their hard work and creativity in writing, practising and performing the song. Many thanks to the music department who helped us record the tune and Miss Spicer (Languages) for putting the video together.
