Dallas Spring Ophthalmology Symposium
Symposium Description and Objectives
This symposium is designed for ophthalmologists, with an invitation extended to technicians, nurses and allied health professionals involved in the evaluation and management of general ophthalmic diseases. Advances in therapies, new procedures and technologies developed in the field of ophthalmology, along with a desire to maintain ethical standards for physicians are contributing factors used in determining content for this symposium. The complexities and complications of eye disease govern this constant demand for education.
Upon completion of this symposium, the participants should be able to:
• Discuss the diagnosis and management of keratoconus and corneal cross-linking.
• Review recent advances in laboratory and molecular diagnosis of uveitis.
• Evaluate evidence from clinical trials on therapeutics for uveitis.
• Identify diseases that mimic dry eye signs and symptoms.
• Review a synopsis of recent updates regarding clinic testing for glaucoma patients.
• Describe noninfectious and infectious uveitis syndromes that comprehensive ophthalmologists and retina specialists will not want to miss.
• Discuss vision- or health-threatening uveitis conditions to improve recognition, diagnosis and treatment of these conditions.
• Identify traditional treatment methods of amblyopia.
• Discuss new technology currently being studied and used in the treatment of amblyopia.
• Discuss diagnosis and treatment options for the post-operative pseudophakic surprise refractive outcome.
• Review the approach to managing the less-than-satisfied post-operative patient.
• Discuss how to differentiate between optic neuritis from arteritis and non-arthritic ischemic optic neuropathy.
• Review treatment alternatives for managing astigmatism.
• Review case presentations that exemplify the pathophysiology of neuro-ophthalmic disorders.
• Review the American Academy of Ophthalmology platform for assessment of technologies that improve retinal care (i.e., including macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion and diabetes).
• Discuss recent OTAs, the analysis of high-level evidence for retinal vascular disease and macular disease conditions, as well as their impact on clinical care.
• Discuss current options regarding the correction of presbyopia in concert with the new technology IOLs.
• Review a video-based lecture that demonstrates surgical management of both phakic and pseudophakic zonulopathy and resultant loose lenses.
• Discuss the origin of the word “quack” and how it has applied to the supposed healing arts for centuries.
• Identify the risks of choosing “alternative medicine” for serious conditions such as cancer, including eye cancer.
• Discuss unethical and ineffective eye treatments that are common today and be able to recognize them as opposed to evidence-based treatments.
• Identify the risks of increasingly popular “integrative medicine” and the all-too frequent implicit profit motive.
