PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Primary Presentation Day Assemblies Our Primary Presentation Day assemblies will be held this Tuesday, 11 December, and all parents and friends of the school are welcome to attend. Invitations were posted out to families whose children will receive an award at a presentation day assembly. Parents are asked to be discreet so that children can enjoy the surprise of being an award recipient.

Year 6 Farewell On Thursday evening, we will celebrate the graduation of our Year 6 students with a dinner dance at Canada Bay Club. This is a special occasion for the students and a significant milestone for families as we thank our senior students for their leadership and service of the school and wish them every success in high school.

New Classrooms On Friday, a number of classes will relocate to new classrooms to enable the movement of student furniture in preparation for 2019 classes. Students will remain in these classrooms for the last few days of term. This may mean that your child will be dismissed from another classroom on these days.

Christmas Carols Night Volunteers Our sincere thanks to parents and friends of the school for organising the carols evening for us namely: Ria Giann, Kirsty Bush, Matt Stafford, Annie Stafford, Julie Van Hal, Sebastian Van Hal, Julian Gamble, Tania Lazarus Hall, Ei-Leen Kim, Hunter Beanland, Sylvia Anderson, Madeline Patrick, Susan Hoffman, Aaron Kelly, Jonathan Chan, Matt Stedman (guitar), Emily Stedman (piano), Kate Sowden (vocalist), Ellie Vickers (vocalist), Robbie Renu (bass), Alan Brnabic (drums) and organiser Darryl Soh.

Parent Volunteer Medallions We would like to thank the many parents who have supported the school and their children by volunteering over their years at DPS. At last week’s volunteer morning tea several families who are leaving us this year were achknowledged for their service to the school including: Victoria Ballantyne, Simone Bradley, Kylie Callanan, Juliette Flowers, Nathanael Hughes, Eugenie Nakat, Libby & Carl Small, Nicolle Starr-Thomas, Daryl Soh and Julie Van Hal.

Student Reports Our Semester 2 student reports will go home next week. In response to parent feedback, the reports will include personalised teacher comments on student progress in English, mathematics and a general comment addressing the social and emotional development of students. Even so, the comments in science, HSIE, PDHPE and creative arts are grade based. Some important aspects of the reports for families to remember are:

‘Sound’ is the expected achievement level that most students should achieve in all learning areas

The reports are a point in time report. This means that we only report on what has been taught and assessed over Terms 3 and Term 4 (weeks 1-8). Therefore, it is possible that your child has performed differently during this reporting period and may receive a different level to the Semester 1 report.

Information about the number of achievements levels (Limited to Outstanding) allocated across a grade is available on request from the school. As you know, we have high expectations of the students. Our results are strong as evident from our NAPLAN test results for Years 3 & 5.

While we do not schedule parent-teacher interviews in term 4 for all families, if you have any concerns about your child’s report, please make an appointment with your child’s teacher to discuss any issues.

Wishing you well for the week ahead.

YEAR 6 NEWS

In preparation for secondary school, our Year 6 students are currently participating in an intensive 4 day high school week program.

Students have been grouped by their teachers and given a timetable which they need to follow as they move to different classrooms with different teachers across a variety of subjects. The key idea of this program is that students experience a typical high school week.

Students carry their belongings for the day knowing initiative, responsibility and punctuality are key to their success.

Subjects for high school week include English, maths, drama, visual arts, engineering, STEAM, PD, PE, health, Indonesian and science. Specialist teachers from Sydney Secondary College Balmain, Dr Brunner (science) and Mr Stephens (music) are adding authentic high school experience to the teaching team.

Thank you to Ms Champion for coordinating staff and students and to our 10 DPS teachers supporting the teaching program.

Next Tuesday 11 December our Stage 3 Presentation Day assembly will be held at 1pm. We hope you will join us to acknowledge and celebrate the efforts and achievements of every student.

Students have been asked to wear full school uniform, including black shoes for this special assembly.

PRIMARY ETHICS – TEACHERS NEEDED

Dear Parents and Carers, Could you be an ethics teacher for Drummoyne Public School?

Some of our current ethics teachers are moving on at the end of the year and we are seeking volunteers so that all of our current classes can continue next year.

Ethics teachers receive full training by Primary Ethics, the not-for-profit organisation approved to design curriculum and training for the ethics program. Training consists of a two day workshop and short online modules. Lesson materials are provided. Suitable volunteers have an interest in children’s education and development of critical thinking skills and must be available on Friday morning each week.

In ethics classes, children learn how to think logically, disagree respectfully and support their arguments with evidence, rather than act according to blind habit or peer pressure. Unfortunately without more volunteers, some children will miss out on these valuable lessons.

If you are looking for an opportunity to make a valuable contribution to our school, please get in touch with Nicky Batt on 040978870 or [email protected], or visit www.primaryethics.com.au. Nicky Batt Ethics Co-ordinator

SRC REPORT

Students in the Drummoyne Student Representative Council are hardworking and responsible members of the school community. They give up their lunch breaks once a week to ensure that students’ voices are heard and to make positive change. This year we have broken into strategic teams setting goals and helping out around the school including running a store at the Fete, collecting fundraising money and keeping the school informed about special events.

During the year, the school initiatives team focussed on ways to make students feel happy and safe at our school. We have surveyed students in order to change the bell music, lead “Walk Safely to School Day” and asked students to complete a bullying survey. We hope to use the information gathered in the bullying surveys to focus on this issue next year.

This year the fundraising team worked towards raising money to support local and national issues. We hosted a drawing competition to raise money for the Great Barrier Reef, ran a book swap to support Indigenous Literacy in NSW and have helped to organise Basket Buddies for Australian families in need during the Christmas period.

The community involvement goal was to increase the school’s involvement with the local and broader community. They worked with Swans Fit Program to organise an AFL skills day. We organised the ANZAC day assembly. We also worked with the fundraising group to organise Friends of Farmers Day. With this day we raised over $1200 for Farmers experiencing the drought in rural NSW.

The sustainability team worked hard to reduce the school’s impact on the environment. We encouraged Nude Food by supporting 4Z with the Waste World Cup, helped keep our school clean with Clean Up Australia Day and are currently encouraging students to do their part by turning off the lights and bringing their own containers for the canteen.

The playground team tried to ensure that students were able to enjoy their lunch and recess breaks by organising the North Playground roster, surveying

students about how they use the playground and ordering more equipment. Peta Flaminio & Abby Clarke CLASS TEACHERS

BASKET BUDDIES

Basket buddies is an initiative of the Magic Moments Foundation. It is a non-profit organisation run totally by volunteers and works with grassroots organisations to anonymously deliver food, clothing, toys and hope to those in our community who need it most. Throughout November and December the SRC are working with Basket Buddies and their classes to create Christmas hampers for families in need. This activity aims to encourage classes to work as a team (decorating a hamper, making a card and collecting specific items) in order to deliver this special gift in time for Christmas. Each student has been given one specific item that they are responsible for collecting. Many have

PBL @ DPS

This week’s PBL lessons will focus on what responsibility looks like on the playground.

Our PBL mascot Monty helps us to remember to be responsible and to do what we know is right.

Everybody has the right to learn and everybody has the right to feel safe.

Responsibility

● I stay in the right place, at the right time ● I think about consequences ● I report any problems to teachers on duty ● I tell the truth ● I follow the rules of different playground zones ● I wear a hat on the playground ● I put my rubbish in the bin ● I take care of property and return property to

where it belongs ● I enter and exit the hall, canteen and toilets

calmly and quietly ● I stop playing and walk to

my class line quickly and quietly when the music plays

● I must ‘Be Ready, Be on Time’ when the bell rings

CANTEEN NEWS

Drummoyne Canteen Committee is pleased to inform you that Eugenie Nakat has accepted the role as canteen manager. Eugenie has been our canteen convener and a dedicated canteen volunteer over the last 8 years. She has been actively involved in all facets of the canteen operation, including:

coordinating volunteers,

trialling recipes

menu planning

pricing review

preparing and cooking lunches

serving school students

Eugenie has a passion for cooking and the canteen. She scours for fresh and wholesome recipes and ingredients to be served by the canteen so that children are getting healthy nutrients to sustain them for longer, throughout the day. Her genuine caring demeanour, harnessed from being a registered nurse and raising three boys, can be felt whether you are a student, school staff, volunteer or a co-worker. We look forward to freshly baked banana bread and lamb kofta Eugenie mentioned, to form part of the school menu, down the track.

Another familiar face in the canteen is Dimi, who is continuing on as the canteen assistant. Dimi is from Cyprus, so it’s in her DNA to love everything seafood and cook a mean Moussaka. There is a vegetarian version but Dimi doesn’t get to make it very often as her husband, Stam is a carnivore, who doesn’t like eggplant. Dimi loves cruising and all arts and crafts. She will go anywhere there’s sun, beach and sand, but during school term, you can find Dimi in the canteen on Thursdays and Fridays, sharing the space with volunteers, cooking up a storm and serving students.

With the skills that both Eugenie and Dimi have, they will make a formidable team bringing about positive changes to the canteen operation.

The links between school achievement and parents’ ability to talk with kids from a young age are now well established.

The language stimulation children receive when they talk with parents is one factor. But engagement in conversation with parents benefits kids in a far broader sense. In many ways it is through conversations that kids get a real sense of us as parents. It is through talking with kids that we impart some of our knowledge, ideas, wisdom and thoughts while also gaining access to a window into their worlds and the way they think.

In the current age of digital distraction, talking with children and young people can be a challenge. Busy schedules, homes designed for individual enjoyment rather than group living, a plethora of screens competing for attention and kids that clam up at the first sign of a chat are some of the conversation blockers parents must overcome.

You need to be cunning, proactive and inventive to get some chat going at home. These are some ideas that will help.

1. Turn screens off. Are you competing with televisions, computers and electronic games for your kids’ attention? If so, take control of the screens to create some conversational space. Start with a screen-free day each week or screen-free hour each day if you have a home full of young hard-core screen junkies.

2. Turn screens on. If you can’t beat them, join them. Some television programs provide great conversational fodder, particularly for older children and teens. Topics can range from “Who’s going to win My Kitchen Rules?” or “What happens to the winners of My Kitchen Rules?” to “What is the point of My Kitchen Rules?”

3. Have regular mealtimes. The family that eats together talks together. Meals are great social occasions – more than just refueling stops. They provide terrific opportunities for families to get together and talk. It’s no coincidence that families who enjoy and appreciate food generally enjoy close relationships as well. However, for this to work it’s important that meals are screen free, so turn off the television and ban phones at the table.

4. Move more. If sitting and chatting is not your child’s thing then try to get some action happening. Boys, in particular, tend to talk more when they are playing, walking or involved in activity with an adult.

5. Talk with kids on their own turf. Many children will open up in the privacy of their own bedroom where they tend to feel more relaxed and secure. If you have something important to discuss then choose a comfortable place and a time that promotes good conversation.

6. Try shoulder-to-shoulder parenting. Travelling together in a car with the radio off, washing the dishes together or playing a game can all provide opportunities for talk. Paradoxically, many teenagers will talk more when they don’t have to concentrate or make eye contact with the other person. That’s why cars can be great conversation catalysts for parents.

Every family has their own way of getting the talk happening. Figure out what works for you and make sure it happens. The best communication in families happens when no one is working at it, however busy modern families need to work on their communication rather than leave it to chance.

21 November 2018 Dear Parent/Caregiver,

2019 Community Language Program At Drummoyne Public School we are fortunate to have a Community Languages program offering both Greek and Italian languages. This program provides the opportunity for students to learn a new language as well as develop cultural awareness. Greek and Italian are taught through a variety of engaging strategies involving:

conversation

plays

games

written tasks

songs and dances

online activities

myths and legends

school incursions and excursions Current educational thinking is that exposure to a different language at an early age enhances reading and listening skills regardless of the language learned. Young children seem to find it easy to speak, read and write a language different to English. For next year, we will place students in classes to learn one of the languages offered. It is expected that children who are native speakers of Italian or Greek, or those who have a family background in either of the languages will be placed in that language. Background in a language means that parents and/or grandparents speak the language. If your child has a sibling in the school already enrolled in a language, it is expected they will be placed in the same language. While every endeavour will be made to place your child in the language of your choice, it may be necessary to go to the second choice if the group size in one language becomes full. It is expected that there will be equal numbers in each language. To ensure your child can take a place in the Community Language program, please complete the form below and return it to the office by Wednesday 12 December. Your child will be notified of their language placement in Week 2 of next year.
