Dear Parents and Community Members,
It has been fantastic to see our students return to school this term with much excitement and enthusiasm. We have many activities planned in the coming weeks, so please ensure you read the newsletter to keep informed. From everyone at Gunnedah South Public School, we wish all our wonderful South mums and South grandmothers a happy Mother’s day. I hope you have a fantastic day on Sunday and are spoilt!
Debating & Chess Our school staff are always looking to provide further opportunities for students. We have started to introduce debating and will look at expanding this program throughout the term, and Mr McGuirk is currently working to develop a Chess club.
Cross Country Congratulations to all students who participated in our School Cross Country last Friday. The day was brilliantly supported by parents, students and teachers. The Cross Country was well organised and run, thanks to our staff, and the students enjoyed themselves. It was noticed how encouraging the students were with each other, saying things like “well done” and “good run”. The great sportsmanship and friendship was nice to see.
Reminder - Term 3 Staff Development Day To support our local community during AGQQUIP and families, the Term 3 Staff Development Day will be on Wednesday the 21st of August. This obviously is our preferred day for students to attend AGQUIP in 2019 and will support less disruptions to student learning.
NPS — Sport This week our students started NPS sport again for Term 2. A big thank you to all who have organised the fantastic array of activities for our students to participate in.
Premier’s Reading Challenge Our school participates in this statewide Challenge where students read a required number of books before August 31.
In K-2 it is 30 books which can be shared, read alone or in class. In Years 3 -6 it is 20 books, 15 must be from the Challenge book list and five free choice titles.
Our school has over 300 K-2 books, 350 Years 3-4 books, 380 Years 5-6 books and 200 Years 7-9 making lots of choices for every interest.
Congratulations to the many students who are already well on the way to completing the Challenge:
Full rules and booklist are at
https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html
NAPLAN Next week our Year 3 and Year 5 students will participate in the NAPLAN assessments. Please be mindful of our students during this time and understand that there will be some minimal disruption to classrooms and regular routines. While NAPLAN can be a stressful time for students, it is a wonderful tool for schools to track individual student growth across their schooling, and it also provides valuable data for the school to improve the quality of teaching and learning. If you have any concerns or questions regarding NAPLAN, please do not hesitate to speak with your child's class teacher or myself.
Finally, thank you to all the helpers who assisted with the P&C Mother’s Day Stall on Thursday. Children were given the opportunity to buy something nice for their mum or grandmother. We really hope you enjoy the surprise, with something they’ve chosen especially for you.
Have a great mothers day weekend.
Kind regards,
Pete Baum (aka Mr. B)

Yarn Up
With KH
In KH, students have been creating two patterns and three patterns using Aboriginal symbols. Haven’t they done an amazing job!
We would also like to introduce “Goldie” the guya (fish). He is joining KH as part of their Living Things unit in Science this term as we learn all about what plants and animals need to survive.
ICAS 2019
Dear parents/caregivers,
I wanted to provide you with some information about ICAS 2019. The assessments will be undertaken online this year and are scheduled for the later part of the year (Term 3).

comprise of eight separate tests: Digital Technologies, English, Mathematics,
Science, Spelling Bee and Writing.
This is a voluntary program and students can nominate to sit the assessments
at a cost to parents/caregivers. If you are interested in having your child
independently assessed using this program, please keep an eye out for a
nomination form which will be sent out towards the end of this Term.
Nomination forms will be due back at school on Thursday 22nd August 2019
(Term 3 Week 5).

This year we will again be participating in the Woolworths Earn & Learn program. Through this
program we will be able to get new educational resources for our school and all we need you
to do is shop for your groceries at Woolworths.
From Wednesday 1st May to Tuesday 25th June or while stock lasts, we are collecting
Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers. You will get one Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker for every
$10 spent (excluding liquor, tobacco and gift cards). Place the Woolworths Earn & Learn

can be dropped into the collection box here at the school or at your local Woolworths.
At the end of the promotion, we’ll be able to get some great new equipment. The range is
