Our Lady, Mother of the Church Mission Statement We, the members of Our Lady, Mother of the Church, are drawn together through baptism as a part of the Body of Christ. We are a caring Catholic community, working together as instruments through which Jesus, our risen Lord and Head, continues His mission. Linked to Christ as His Body, we believe that the risen Jesus still proclaims God’s word, gives thanks and praise, welcomes, nurtures, comforts and reaches out to all people. Using the hands and hearts of the members of the parish, with a growing sense that each of us is gifted and has an important part to play in our Parish, Church and World, we renew our call: ♦ to be a Parish diligent about Word and Eucharist, the primary source of our nourishment and spiritual growth... ♦ to be “missioned” - sent forth in the person of Jesus, to bring His Word and Eucharist to family, friends, neighbors and

workplace... ♦ to reach out to the sick, the homebound, the persecuted, the lonely, the poor and the bereaved… ♦ to find time to share laughter, joy, friendship, at times, tears; and always to share the goodness of each other...

Our Lady, Mother of the Church In your Estate Plans

As Christian stewards, we share the responsibility of making our church a true com-

munity of faith and a vibrant source of service to the larger community. That in-cludes providing financial support for todays needs-and building a firm financial

    foundation for tomorrow.

Planned giving provides an opportunity-in several ways-to give a gift that forever perpetuates our Catholic faith. Through your gift you will oversee a strong, healthy

Church able to meet the spiritual needs of generations to come.

You can learn more by contacting Fr. Andrew or the

Diocesan Office of Stewardship & Development at 312-534-7615.

No mass requests for weekend masses on a Saturday or a Sunday are available until July 1, 2017 and after due to the number of requests filled. Suggested donations per Mass are $10. Please note that the Sanctuary Lamp and Bread & Wine requests fill-up quickly and we have limited number re-quests. Please contact the rectory for availability. There no longer dates available for the Sanctuary Lamp for 2017 requests for 2018 are not available at this time. The cost is $50 for the Bread and Wine. We do have a number of weeks open for Bread and Wine requests. All Mass or remembrance requests can be made in person at the rectory or preferably, by completing the Mass request envelope that can be found in the Narthex. Please contact the Rectory for availability. Please insert your payment in the envelope and drop it in the collection basket or the mail slot at the Rectory. While we try to ac-commodate different situations, especially with our homebound parishioners, we cannot honor mass intentions over the phone.

    TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

In many parish churches, more rarely in monastery churches and cathedrals, the tabernacle with the Blessed Sacrament is visible from a doorway or aisle in the church. Normally, a person is to give the proper sign of reverence, a genuflection, when passing

in proximity to the tabernacle. The word "genuflect" comes from Latin roots meaning bending (or flexing) the knee. A com-mon-sense exception to the rule is for a sacristan who is taking

care of the church and can't be genuflecting every thirty seconds during a vacuum run. Also excepted are persons in procession entrusted with important symbols of the Lord's presence. So, a

crossbearer or a minister carrying the Gospel book, or ministers on their way to their Communion stations do not genuflect. For everyone else, the usual sign of reverence for the Lord's pres-

ence in the Blessed Sacrament is to genuflect on the right knee. The oldest form of reverence during prayer in our tradition is

standing; kneeling or genuflecting is a sign borrowed from old civic practice. The posture of kneeling, even on one knee, is a sign of submission. Servants would take this position before

their masters in the ancient world. It said: I'm not running away, I'm yours, I'm here for you. This is what your genuflection says when you enter a Catholic church where the place of reservation

of the Blessed Sacrament is visible to you: I'm yours.
