The bay, who returned to Churchill Downs Monday where he will train up to the GI Belmont S. June 6, jogged once around the one-mile Louisville oval with regular exercise rider Jorge Alvarez aboard. "He looked very good, I couldn't be happier," said Jimmy Barnes, Bob Baffert's chief assistant. "His energy level is good." Barnes added, "We'll go to the track tomorrow and Bob [Baffert] will tell me what he wants to do. If he says jog him another day, we'll jog him another day. If he says gallop, then we'll gallop. Bottom line, he is in charge; I'm just the caretaker of the horse." American Pharoah is following the same post- Preakness regiment Baffert employed with his previous Triple Crown hopefuls Silver Charm (1997), Real Quiet (1998) and War Emblem (2002). "We come back here with all of our Derby horses and we usually come back this way," said Barnes. "I'd prefer to train here, we're set up here and our barn is here. I mean New York is all right. It's a big track and a sandy track. You get a lot of weather that you get here, but we're comfortable here.@ Barnes added, "We had some disappointing years. Point Given...I really thought we could have won the Triple Crown that year and we didn't win the first one. But [American Pharoah] fits right in with the best of them. He's a pleasure to train, he does everything with ease and he's a big mover. I think probably one of his best assets is how he moves. His action and everything is forward and big." BELARDO FACES GLENEAGLES CHALLENGE There were no surprises as the draw was made for Satuday=s G1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas, with the May 2 G1 2000 Guineas hero Gleneagles (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) set to race from stall two under Ryan Moore as he bids to become the eighth to complete the Guineas double. One who is poised to upset the script is Godolphin and Prince Faisal=s Belardo (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), who is looking to rebound from a disappointing effort when eighth in the Apr. 18 G3 Greenham S. at Newbury. On ground contrasting with the easy surface he encountered when winning the G1 Dewhurst S. at Newmarket in October, last year=s champion 2-year-old never threatened in that seven-furlong prep for the Guineas but is re-fitted with the hood in which he excelled on Future Champions Day. Trainer Roger Varian is full of hope he can get back on track. AHe did some very nice work on Sunday morning, so the plan is to run him on Saturday,@ the conditioner said. AYou have to keep faith in these horses and you can=t write them off after one run, especially as the ground was very quick at Newbury and he just never let himself down. He didn=t have a hard race, so he=s a fresh horse.@ Cont. p6 American Pharoah Horsephotos Gleneagles Racing Post

JERKENS DUO TO RUN ON BELMONT DAY The Jimmy Jerkens-trained duo of Wicked Strong(Hard Spun) and Effinex (Mineshaft) are both eyeingstakes on the GI Belmont S. undercard June 6 for theirnext starts. The pair was last seen in Aqueduct=s

GIII Excelsior S. Apr. 25, whereEffinex upset hisheavily favoredstablemate, whochecked in third, with a victory atodds of 6-1. Centennial Farms=sWicked Strong ispointing for the GI Metropolitan H.,where he is likely toface GI Belmont S.winners Tonalist(Tapit) and Palace

Malice (Curlin), as well as MGSW Honor Code (A.P.Indy) and possibly GI Breeders= Cup Classic victorBayern (Offlee Wild). Last year=s GI TwinSpires.comWood Memorial S. and GII Jim Dandy S. hero breezedfive furlongs in 1:00.50 (2/22) over the Belmont maintrack Thursday morning. "He worked good [Thursday]," said Jerkens. "He'sgoing to work again next week. I felt he ran good enoughin Florida, in that mile race [a close fourth to Honor Codein the GII Gulfstream Park H. Mar. 7] to think he belongs.[The Met Mile] is a mile around a big, sloping turn andhe's always run good [at Belmont]. It's always nice torun in your backyard if you can. There really isn'tanything that's super ideal at the moment, but it setshim up for the summer if he runs [at Saratoga] for the[GI] Whitney [H.] and [GI] Woodward [S.]."

Wicked Strong=s sophomore season ended with thecolt throwing rider Rajiv Maragh after clipping heels inthe GI Jockey Club Gold Cup S. at Belmont Sept. 27.The rangy bay kicked off this term in the GulfstreamPark H. prior to his latest effort in the Excelsior. Tri-Bone Stables=s Effinex will aim for the GII BrooklynInvitational H. run at the Belmont S. distance of 1 1/2 miles. The dark bay, who was eighth to hisstablemate in last year=s Wood, is perfect so far thisseason with a Mar. 27 Aqueduct optional claimervictory to his credit in additionto the Excelsior. "He's been improving slowlyand surely, which is a greatsign," said Jerkens. "Evenlooking at him, the differencebetween now and when hewas a 3-year-old, he almostlooks like he's twice the size, and that's what you want. Themore he does in open andgraded company is best for himin the future to stand as astallion. He won going 1 1/4 miles [in the Excelsior]; I can't say that he was afresh horse at the end, but he fights until the end. When you have a horse with that kind of determinationyou know anything can happen."

CHRB APPROVES MENU OF SUMMER DATESBy T.D. Thornton On Thursday the California Horse Racing Boardapproved upcoming racing dates at four tracks thatextend through Labor Day, but not before several of themeet applicants--Los Alamitos Race Course and Del MarThoroughbred Club, specifically--were grilled aboutfinances, marketing initiatives and stabling issues. Thoroughbred meets at Los Alamitos (July 2-12), theCalifornia Exposition and State Fair at Sacramento (July 10-26), Del Mar (July 16-Sept 7) and SonomaCounty Fair at Santa Rosa (July 30-Aug 16) were allunanimously approved pending the filing of routinepaperwork such as fire inspections, bond deliverancesand horsemen=s association contracts. CHRB Approves Menu of Summer Dates cont. But prior to voting on the Los Alamitos license, CHRBmember Madeline Auerbach wanted an explanation asto why the applicant, which she described as being in aAdeficit situation,@ was budgeting a Avery generous@$350,000 for the July 4 GII Los Alamitos Derby, instead of, say, $250,000. AI don=t believe we could have attracted the samehorses for $250,000,@ said Brad McKenzie, speaking onbehalf of Los Alamitos Racing Association. AIt wouldhave affected our graded status. We=re hoping to makethis race a Grade IY.It is highly competitive for thesetypes of horses. This race is the centerpiece of ourracing.@ McKenzie continued, AWe=ve been out of sight for sixmonths. We ran a meet in December, now we=recoming back in July for eight days. I don=t have theluxury of getting into a meet and just letting it build. Ifwe don=t get [the bettors=] attention the first weekend,we=re done. So we need a race that not only locally, butnationally, lets people know that Los Alamitos is back.@ Auerbach next wanted to know if Los Alamitos hadmoved forward with any of the backstretch securityenhancements the CHRB had suggested to all licenseesat previous meetings. Several other board membersechoed the sentiment that the CHRB had made thosesuggestions with the hope that the tracks and theThoroughbred Owners of California (TOC) wouldpartner to voluntarily beef up security so the CHRBwould not have to mandate new rules.

ATo answer your question bluntly, we have notimplemented anything. We have not placed securitycameras in the barn areas,@ McKenzie said. Joe Morris, president of the TOC, stepped up toclarify that Athe TOC is still committing dollars to [asecurity plan], and we=re just starting here and movingforward with it.@ McKenzie, who seemed to bristle at Auebach=s line ofquestioning, then spoke to the broader question offinancial matters at Los Alamitos. A[The California] industry is still trying to find itsequilibrium after the closing of Hollywood Park--wheredo these dates go and what=s the best way for theindustry to move forward?@ McKenzie askedrhetorically. ARight now this is what we=ve got andwe=re trying to make the best of itYLast year we knewthat we were going to be overpaid for the year. Wedidn=t feel we had a choiceYWe realized that was aprice we had to pay to get these meets off to as good astart as possibleYWhen you=re in this competitive amarket, you have to offer purses that attract horses. When you have an eight-day meet in between SantaAnita and Del Mar, if you just run [lower quality] races, you=re going to get bypassed.@ Auerbach countered, AI hear you, and it=s not just aprice you pay, it=s a price we all pay when these thingshappen.@ When Del Mar=s application came up for discussion, AlanBalch, executive director of the California ThoroughbredTrainers, told the CHRB that his organization had not yetsigned its contract with Del Mar over stabling concerns, which he described as Athe elephant in the room.@ Cont. p5

CHRB Approves Menu of Summer Dates cont. Balch said that issues such as overcrowding at DelMar and the lack of information about whether stablingwould remain open at Santa Anita Park, Los Alamitosand elsewhere during the Del Mar meet Aresults in thehorsemen being held hostage@ about planning when andwhere to race. Another factor in play was the CHRB'stabling of an agenda item over whether race dates onSept. 26 and 27 would be transferred from Santa Anitato Los Alamitos. Balch acknowledged that the situation wasn=t entirelyDel Mar=s fault or responsibility, but backed off of hisplanned request for the CHRB to mediate the affairwhen CHRB officials stepped in to explain that theywere already working toward progress to resolve theissue. AWe=re very concerned that late in June is not onlypushing the envelope [for decisions on stabling and racedates], but breaking the envelope,@ Balch said.AEverybody needs to know what the situation is goingto be going forward, especially [with Del Mar being] ourshowcase meeting.@ Tom Robbins, Del Mar=s executive vice president ofracing and industry relations, updated the CHRB on thechangeover to dirt from a synthetic surface on the maintrack and the progress of second-season growth on theturf course. AThe often-mentioned El Segundo sand is the samematerial that we have at Santa Anita,@ Robbins said.

He added that the main track conversion wascompleted in April, and that for the first time in thetrack=s history, 150 Thoroughbreds began training atDel Mar in the month of May. As for the turf course, Robbins said, AWe have onemore year of maturity under our belt. The new course ismoving along beautifully. We=re out there almost everyday and it=s very, very good at this point.@ With a newwatering and aeration system, he said, Awe=re getting tothe point where it [will be] in optimum shape foropening day.@ Given the drought conditions in California, Robbinssaid Del Mar is using reclaimed water for all main trackand turf course hydration. In other news, CHRB executive director RickBaedeker reported the CHRB has been authorized toaugment its budget by up to $1.2 million for contractedtesting with the Kenneth L. Maddy Equine AnalyticalChemistry Laboratory to avoid a cut in services for thenew fiscal year that begins July 1. And in a personnel switch, jockey Alex Solis has beenappointed to the CHRB, replacing first vice chair BoDerek, who resigned to pursue other businessopportunities after serving nearly seven years.According to the CHRB, it the first time a current orformer jockey has ever been appointed to the board.

Dear Dean: Read your article about "sideshows" displacing thefocus on the race and I completely agree. Well said! When I watched the Derby (do I have to say "presentedby Yum!", hate that) and the Preakness swim meet, Iabsolutely cringed when they showed movie stars, asked "who are you wearing," whatever, blah, blah, tofill up air time. Who cares? Why not show more aboutHORSES? Show what it takes to train a race horse, lifeon the backside, excercise riders, the skill and guts thejockeys need every ride. Let the public see the completepicture of racing to fully illustrate how tough it is, howmuch dedication it takes to get a horse to race and win. Preaching to the choir, right? Just my two cents, Dean. Thank you to you and yourcompany for great articles. Sincerely, Patricia Bosica

We=d be very confident that, provided theground isn=t too quick, we=ve still got a very good horseon our hands.@ The going at the Kildare venue is currently good-to-yielding, with the forecast leading up to the race mainlydry. EPICURIS PASSED STALLS TEST Juddmonte Farms= G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud heroEpicuris (GB) (Rail Link {GB}) came through a stalls testat Chantilly Thursday morning, but trainer CriquetteHead-Maarek cannot rest on her laurels ahead of the G1 French Derby. While the bay successfully passedthrough the gates, he did so only accompanied byNicolas Blondeau, theman renowned forhelping Goldikova (Ire)(Anabaa) at the start ofraces. With the rulesdifferent in France toEngland, Head-Maarekwill now apply for specialdispensation for Blondeauto be with the colt at thestart of the G1 Prix duJockey Club. Epicurisneeded to pass a stalls test after refusing to enter thembefore his scheduled run in the G2 Prix Greffulhe. "He went in so they have agreed to let him run," saidHead-Maarek. AThe only problem is, he only goes inwith the same man each time, Nicolas Blondeau, so weare asking if he can come when he races. In England itwouldn't be a problem but the rules are different here.@ Added the trainer, AWe tried him without him, firsttime he went in fine, but the second time he wouldn't.He obviously trusts him, but horses are like women--they can be a bit funny! EddieLynam's globetrotting star last ran in Ireland in the G3 Flying Five S. at The Curragh when second toAmour Propre (GB) (Paris House {GB}). He also had the

option of the G2 Temple S.at Haydock, a race he wonin 2011, on the same day,but Irish fans will now getthe chance to see one oftheir great performers. Whatalso worked in TheCurragh's favor is thatregular rider Richard Hughesis in Ireland this weekend toride Ivawood (Ire) (Zebedee

{GB}) in the G1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas. Lynam told the Irish Herald, "We want to run thisweekend. The ground at The Curragh is good toyielding and I am happy with that. [We're also] keen torun in Ireland after so long." Sole Power has taken his connections all around theworld and Paddy Power, spokesman for thebookmakers of the same name whose parents own thesprinter, added, "We decided this weekend the bestoption was to run at The Curragh. We'd spoken tosomebody who walked the track at Haydock and theground is just a bit softer there so it's going to be moresuitable at The Curragh. Richard Hughes will be at theCurragh, too."

    >GREY= CAMP HAPPY WITH GOING Kevin Ryan believes the ground is turning in The GreyGatsby (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire})'s favor as he

prepares his dual Group 1 winnerfor the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup atThe Curragh Sunday. The going atThe Curragh was describedThursday morning as good toyielding and the forecast is for dryweather through the weekend. "I think the ground is coming inhis favor now and it could be goodon Sunday, which would be ideal,"said Ryan. "I wouldn't even worryabout good to soft. What hedoesn't want is very soft ground.Hopefully the ground will come for

him." Ryan is convinced what helps make The Grey Gatsbystand out is that he thrives on traveling. "He's a very simple horse to deal with and alwayshas been. He does exactly what you want him to do,"the North Yorkshire trainer told At The Races. "He'sgreat in the mornings and he's a good traveler as well.He seems to enjoy going away from home and herelaxes when he goes to the racecourse."
