Dear Fellow Lot Owners & Friends:
Well, for those of you that may not have heard; Our land purchase proposal was defeated by a very small margin. I
admire those that took the time to go through the pros and cons of this proposal, and took the time to make an informed
decision whether it was a yes or no. What I have trouble with is the number of owners that displayed indifference and
apathy towards an important decision affecting a place that means so much to me.
On the brighter side, I was very moved by the comments of support, and respect for the Board, and Management of our
Resort. Many thanks to those speakers.
The Corn Roast, judging from the faces of the kids, and again the kind comments of many lot owners appeared to be a
huge success. So many hours of preparation prior to, and during the event ensured smooth, efficient food service.
Heartfelt, and genuine admiration to Lynn Wortman, and a vast group of volunteers whose only reward is in the satis-
faction of a job well done, and pride in the enjoyment of their efforts by so many lot owners.
Don and his crew pulled off a minor miracle with the sudden change in venue. Everything had to be moved, the club-
house set up, lot owners informed—they worked together like the great team they are.
The dance in my opinion was the best this year. Moods just seemed positive, and it was a pleasure to watch the happy
faces. I had the opportunity to visit with many lot owners that I haven’t seen in a while and enjoyed it immensely.
With the supportive comment from lot owners over the weekend, the joy of watching the kids, and a wonderful e-mail
from two relatively new lot owners, I would have to rate it as one of my best weekends in a long time.
As this time of the year approaches, I have a tendency to get a little melancholy about closing up, and missing my
friends in “my happy place”. I am extremely grateful for the talks, the support, and your friendship. This weekend I
heard what I needed to hear, at a time I needed to hear it. Thanks for making this old guy so happy.
Your Board will be busy after this month preparing budgets for next year. We invite all lot owners to submit ideas for
things they would like monies spent on. It is your money, and you should have some in-put as to where it is spent. The
Board will carefully scrutinize each and every suggestion.
There is still some great weather ahead, and exciting times to share with friends—be good to yourselves, and remem-
ber: be safe, be happy be “Carefree”.
Points to ponder:
Never Trust people who are constantly smiling. They are either selling something, or they are not too bright.
When I die I want to go peacefully in my sleep like my Grandfather. Not screaming like the people in the back seat of
his car.
Best regards,
Dennis Herr

What can be done to control Black Knot?
Prune out all knot-bearing branches during late fall, winter or very early spring when plants are dormant and
knots are easy to see
Remove infected branches to at least 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) below knot. NOTE: It is preferable to prune an infect-
ed branch further back to an appropriate location, such as a healthy collar, rather than leave a stub
As a precaution, cutting blades should be cleaned and disinfected after pruning, if possible, especially if cuts
have been made through obviously infected material
For knots on scaffold branches or trunks that can’t be removed, cut away diseased tissue down to good wood and
at least 1 cm (1/2 inch) beyond the edge of the knot
Failure to remove branches beyond the internal growth will result in re-growth of the fungus
DISEASED WOOD MUST BE DESTROYED IMMEDIATELY (burned, buried or removed from site). Dis-
eased knots can produce and release spores for up to 4 months after removal. Proper composting can help to ac-
celerate the breakdown of infected materials
Ensure plants are healthy and free from stress (not a guarantee from disease)
Regular monitoring
Ensure adequate canopy ventilation through proper pruning
Chemical control (preventative not curative)
Few choices available
Not usually recommended unless for valuable plantings, such as collections, orchards, arboreta or for severe in-
festations
Other options
May include use of more resistant selections, ensuring adequate buffer zones between plantings and wild stock,
or potential employing biological control products (limited)
Consider hiring a trained professional for pruning activities (Find a Certified Arborist)
Black Knot has been seen in the resort.
Black Knot, caused by the fungus Apiospoorina morbosa, is a very common disease of plants in the genusPrunus. This disease re-
duced the aesthetic value of affected speciments, as infections spread rapidly; high levels may result in the eventual death of the
plant.
How can you recognize Black Knot?
The most distinguishing symptom of Black Knot is the characteristic black, tar-like swellings that develop on branches of the infected
plant.
Initially, a small, olive-green gall or swelling will develop at a succulent growing point or fruit spear. This swelling will grow until it is
mature after 2-3 years. The mature galls are hard, black, 10 to 15 cm and may be somewhat ruptured. Mature galls will produce and
release a vast amount of spores during the bloom period, resulting in a rapid increase in infections. The fungus continues to grow in-
ternally and externally, with the branch eventually becoming girdled and dying.
What can be done to control Black Knot?
Prune out all knot-bearing branches during late fall, winter or very early spring when
plants are dormant and knots are easy to see
