Friedens United Church of Christ
July/August 2019 Newsletter
From the
Pastor
When you were a kid what superpower did you want to have? Flying like Superman? Scaling
tall buildings like Spiderman? What superpower did you want to have and how did you want to
use it?
I thought about that recently. On the website forum Reddit, a question was asked, “If you could
have a useless superpower, what would it be?” Did you catch that – a useless superpower?
Here’s one response that came in to that question: “The ability to win at rock-paper-scissors
every single time.” Well, I guess that certainly is a useless superpower.
Here are some other responses: “Whenever I pick up a sock, the sock next to it would become
the matching one.” O.K.
One guy responded: “The power to be able to slam a revolving door.”
Another said, “When I catch a cold, the ability to know exactly where and when I got it.” I guess
that would be for the purpose of retribution.
And finally, “Always knowing when to use a semicolon.” That must be for an English major.
What about you? What useless superpower would you wish for? It‘s a fun question to
consider because we all want to believe that we have untapped powers within us, and that we
would have the courage to use those untapped powers if a need ever arises.
In Luke 10, we find that Jesus sent out 72 of his followers to prepare the way for his ministry.
He gave them the power to heal and help people. Jesus gave them authority to preach about
his rule in their lives. They came back rejoicing over all the things they were able to do for
Jesus.
This summer I hope you have time to daydream about useless things, but I really hope you
can discover real ways to serve our Lord. That discovery will help to fill you with joy!
Enjoying God’s creation,
Rev. Dr. Tyson L. Frey

REDNER’S SAVE-A-TAPE PROGRAM
Back on June 18, 2015 the Wringer Man Team made a great presentation about washing
devices and machines. Do you remember what the oldest washing device was? Do you
remember that the Eskimos wash their clothing in Tide?
The Wringer Man Team (Bob & Susie Lee) recently contacted me about a new program. Bob
has a new program about ironing clothes. We both agreed that the clothing we
washed on June 18, 2015 should now be dry enough to iron!
Join us on Thursday, July 18 at 10 am in Weidner Hall to hear and see what
Bob and Susie have to show us about the pressing subject of ironing clothing.
Please contact Ron or Naomi Klein at 610-929-4898 if you have any questions.

OLEY VALLEY COMMUNITY LIBRARY PRESENTS
In Weidner Hall

The United Church of Christ reelected its General Minister and President and elected a
new Associate General Minister on Monday, June 24, at its General Synod in Milwaukee.
The nomination of the Rev. Karen Georgia Thompson to be Associate General Minister of
Global Engagement received overwhelming support from the delegates, going forward
without discussion. She will serve in that position for a four-year term, beginning August 1.
The Rev. John C. Dorhauer, General Minister and President, received significant support.
He also faced statements in opposition to his election.
Chris Watson of the New York Conference, voiced a widely held concern that it was time
for a woman, or a person of color, or an LGBTQ person to lead. She felt other guidance as
well. “John Dorhauer has the Holy Spirit,” she declared.
Nearly all of those who spoke in opposition simultaneously declared their own affection for
Rev. Dorhauer and his leadership, yet believed it vitally important to put their concerns on
the record. Most also said they believed he would be elected, as he was with a thirty-vote
margin.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve another four years and to lead this
denomination,” said Dorhauer in a brief interview following the vote. “I am fully committed
to the mission and will seek to do all I can to inspire and empower the members of this
denomination in partnership with the Holy Spirit to fulfill that mission.

MISSION TEAM - Barb Covey & Sue Henne
Be sure to consider the newly implemented GIFT CARD PROGRAM. It doesn’t
cost you any extra for your groceries, and you will be earning money for the
Mission Team and its endeavors which help others in the community and
beyond. Contact Terry Boyer at 484-650-7500 if you have questions.
The VETERANS SOCIAL CENTER is running smoothly and Mission Team member
Jay Estep will be operating the facility while the Graybills are on vacation. This is
just one more way the Mission Team tries to help, and one more reason why your
support is so important.
FUNDING is under consideration for the remainder of 2019, and your suggestions of
possible recipients and/or projects are welcome. This is your money and the Mission
Team would like to use it in ways that you feel are best. Please let a Mission Team
member know your wishes.
Don’t forget the SHARING CORNER on the Weidner Hall bulletin
board. Freebies can be posted there as well as requests of items you would
like to have donated for your personal use. Remind your fellow Friedens folk
about this service, too!
Remember CARING CONNECTIONS and its offer to help in various ways. Not
everyone has a family member nearby who can give rides or help with household
chores or yardwork. Caring Connections members are called upon if you are in that
position and need a hand.
Mark your calendars for the 2019 Reading/Berks CROP HUNGER
WALK. The walk will take place on Sunday, October 6 at Gring's Mill. More
information will be available in the next newsletter. Let's see if we can top last
year's numbers of 21 walkers and $2,550 raised in donations!
It's time for BACKPACKS AND SCHOOL SUPPLIES already! Over the past 5
years we have joined with other churches in the Oley Valley to provide backpacks
and school supplies to the children of families who are served by the OVFP and
other children identified by the Oley School District as being in need. Once again,
the Friedens Mission Team will purchase 36 backpacks for this project. Pencils,
pens, colored pencils, erasers, notebook paper, 1 inch three-ring binders, single subject
notebooks, colored markers and hi-lighters are needed to fill the backpacks. If you wish to help
by purchasing school supplies, please sigh-up on the display board located in the Narthex. We
can only accept the items that are mentioned here. Information about quantities is listed with
each item. If you don't like shopping but would like to donate money for the purchase of school
supplies, speak to Sue Henne or mark "MT School Supplies" on your offering envelope. All
school supplies and/or monetary donations must be received by Sunday, July 28. The
backpacks will be on display on Sunday, August 18 when they are blessed during our worship
service. Last year a total of 124 backpacks were handed out. Thank you for your support of
this vital local mission outreach project. Every child should have the opportunity to be
successful in school and for that to happen, they need the appropriate tools.

FRIEDENS LUAU
On Saturday, May 18 about 75 people gathered in Weidner for a Luau. Dressed in Hawaiian
shirts, grass skirts and leis, everyone had a festive time. We enjoyed a roasted pig and lots of
great food. Some tried out their agility with the limbo stick, a few danced the hula, while others
caught up with friends and enjoyed the music. A great time was enjoyed by both young and
old, and almost everyone went home with a prize. Over $1,000 was raised to support the Work
Camp in Florida. Thanks for supporting this fun event for an important cause.

MISSION TRIP / WORK CAMP
Keep the coupons and Box Tops for Education rolling in for our military families
stationed in Guam. We are on track to surpass last year's coupon pound total. Our
last coupon mailing cost $19.95, funded by the Mission Team. As always, thank
you for your support of this money-saving Mission Outreach Program which benefits
all five branches of our military currently stationed in Guam.
The Mission Team supported the OLEY VALLEY FOOD PANTRY in May by spending $50
towards the purchase of boxed cereal and another $50 in June for the purchase of condiments.
One of the items that the Oley Valley Food Pantry is always in need of is
canned vegetables, so July has been deemed "Canned Veggie Month" for our
donation item. Let's see which veggie is the most popular among our
congregation members...canned carrots, canned corn, canned green beans, or
canned peas. Place your cans in the appropriately marked boxes located at the front of the
Sanctuary through July 14. The veggie that reigns supreme will be announced in the
September Newsletter. As always, your support of this crucial Mission Outreach Program is
greatly appreciated by the OVFP and the clients they serve.
Most of us take for granted how easy it is to obtain a bottle or can of fruit juice. For
people on a fixed income or for those who have lost their jobs, however, bottled or
canned juices are a luxury they do without. Let's help our neighbors in need have the
opportunity to drink juice by contributing non-refrigerated bottled or canned juices for the
month of August. Our goal is to collect 125 bottles/cans of juice so that every family
served by the food pantry would receive one. Let's see how close we can get to that
number!!! Juice donations will be collected through August 18. The OVFP and the clients they
serve send their thanks and heart-felt appreciation for your generous support.
The Mission Team will not meet during the month of July. Our next meeting is scheduled for
Monday, August 5, 2019, beginning at 7 pm in the Conference Room. New faces and ideas are
always welcome!
ENVIRONMENTAL TIP: Recycling doesn’t mean only separating your cans and
bottles. It can mean using things a second (or third) time. That nice padded envelope
you got in the mail for example? Instead of throwing it away, scratch out the address,
tear off the stamps, and use it again.
At the time of this writing, 11 Friedens
members are hard at work in Volusia County,
Florida volunteering with hurricane disaster
recovery projects in that area. Larry & Carol
Angstadt, Jill Henne, Sue Henne, Janet
Levan, Carol Miller, Erma Miller, Brian Ott,
Henry & Linda Schlegel and Larry Spayd
make up this ambitious team. Watch the
September newsletter for a complete account
of their experiences.

MAY 14, 2019 CONSISTORY MEETING HIGHLIGHTS - Shirley Riegel-Ferreri
The Consistory is searching for an effective way to communicate the financial status of the
church to the entire congregation. Concluded that we will discontinue the graphs and pie chart
for the foreseeable future in the monthly newsletter and provide a more concise financial
report. Ron Klein motioned to approve the change, seconded by Stan Degler, motion
approved.
Denise Bucciaglia attended the meeting with the following administrative concerns:
- Is there a need for the old church Bulletins? Recommended recycling.
- Lack of communication in the daily operation of the church.
-A new printer is necessary, consistory approved the purchase of a new printer.
- Offsite backup of office systems. She recommended safe and consistent continuity of
record keeping, such as a cloud-based program. She presented her recommendations.
Research will be completed and a recommendation will be presented at the June 2019
Consistory meeting.
- Denise stated that she does not want the responsibility of tracking the clearances for
Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. According to the by-laws the Office
Administrator, along with the Pastor and the President of the Consistory, share this task.
Dave Wolfe will create a checklist that will streamline the process.
Old Business
Organist Search: It was suggested that we conduct a survey and contact 10 local churches of
similar size, decide a range which we can afford. That will give candidates a realistic idea of
the salary range.
Parsonage Sale Preparation: It is estimated that in order to remediate the lead paint and
survey for a subdivision it would cost $20,000. Tabled while the Property Committee prepares
a recommendation as to how best to move forward.
Library Meeting of 4/16/19: Dave Wolfe and Andy Samuelson met with representatives of the
Oley Valley Library and both parties feel that a written “rental agreement document” is
necessary moving forward. Currently there is nothing in writing. It was agreed upon that
Essig, Inc. will install the new air conditioning unit.
New Business
A letter regarding Summer Worship to the congregation will include a reminder about the
change in scheduled time as well as the June Communion date, which will coincide with
Confirmation Sunday June 9, 2019. Dave will create a letter for distribution as a reminder that
the “Stay Cool Campaign” is on-going as we try to increase the building fund account.
Ron Klein will ask Harold Hoch if he is willing to take on the task of video recording the physical
facilities for insurance purposes.
Pastor’s Report: Included services and events capturing the spirit of Easter, there was a
Confirmation Retreat, and an Adult Baptism. The Pastor made a note on mentioning the
$2,000 donation by the Mission Team for Bethany Children’s Home “Helping Hands” Program,
which will house and support immigrant children. All other details and statistics can be found in
the Pastor’s April 2019 report.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
Vacation Bible School returned to Friedens for the first time since 2016. Everyone had a great
time at GiddyUp Junction. VBS was a huge success thanks to all of the volunteers who taught,
planned, coordinated snacks and led the kids in fun activities. We had 22 kids attend the
program. The following pictures will let you know why everyone had big smiles on their faces!

TREASURER’S REPORT - Cindy Conrad
2018-2019 CONFIRMATION
Sunday, June 9, 2019 was a triumphant day at
Friedens UCC as Karla Hetrick, Delaney Kegerise,
Lauren Schaeffer and Tetje Williamson were received
into membership via the rite of confirmation. The girls
had been preparing for this day since last September
with weekly classes, two retreats and service
projects.
Being a Christian is a lifelong faith journey, and
confirmation is one step on that journey. Confirmation
is not a starting point, nor is it an ending point. It’s a
step. We’re all on this journey together, and we
welcome these new companions on that journey.
Welcome them and congratulate them when you see
them.
Committee Reports: The Property Committee submitted requests for entry way brick replacement
and painting of metal roofs on the property. The brick work will be completed by Feeg at the
estimated cost of $3,575. This was approved following a motion by Ron Klein and a second by
Mark Hoch. The brick work is a safety issue and was deemed immediately necessary and the
roof painting was tabled (bid $2,275). Saturday, June 1, at 8 am mulching will commence and all
volunteers welcome.

holder in the Narthex.

DELEGATES ATTEND PSEC SPRING MEETING - Carol Miller
Sue Henne and I were two of the 194 voting delegates at the May 31-June 1 Annual Spring
Meeting of the Pennsylvania Southeast Conference of the United Church of Christ, held in
the student center at West Chester University.
In addition to being a wonderful opportunity to interact with other UCC members, the
conference provides updates about the missions and programs of PSEC, celebrates the
achievements of UCC congregations and pastors in our conference, offers worship
opportunities, and encourages us to examine and deepen our faith and relationship with
Jesus.
Highlights of these two days for Sue and me included:
*Friday evening’s worship with communion led by conference pastors and lay delegates. It
included a stirring sermon by Rev. Cean James, our Associate Conference Minister for
Congregational Development, who challenged us to be pilgrims and not tourists in our faith.
Rev. Cean is pastor of Grace Christian Fellowship UCC (Philadelphia). The gospel choir
from his church presented praise songs during the service.
*Celebration of ordination anniversaries of conference pastors, including the 70th anniversary
for Rev. Theodore Horvath who will turn 100 in October and occasionally serves as a supply
pastor on Sundays. We were delighted to applaud the 30th anniversary for three pastors
who have served our congregation—Rev. Thomas Adil, Rev. Jon Fogle and Rev. Anne
Hoffmann.
*Recognition of Friedens UCC-Oley as a 5 for 5 Church. Our church financially supported
Our Churches Wider Mission, One Great Hour of Sharing, Strengthen the Church, Neighbors
in Need, and The Christmas Fund.
*Five presentations by author, speaker, activist and public theologian Brian McLaren. Brian
based his sessions on his book: The Great Spiritual Migration—How the World’s Largest
Religion Is Seeking a Better Way to be Christian.
Please chat with Sue and me about our experiences, and thank you for letting us represent
our church family.
