An informal letter or a friendly letter is a letter to a close friend or an acquaintance. There are many reasons for writing a friendly letter, but usually friendly letters consist of topics on a personal level. Friendly letters can either be printed or hand-written.

Friendly letters have five parts:

1. The Heading2. The Salutation (greeting)3. The Body4. The Closing5. The Signature

The Heading

The first part of a friendly letter is called the heading. The heading includes the writer’s address and the date. The heading is written in the upper right-hand corner of the page.

The Salutation (Greeting)

The second part of the friendly letter is the greeting. It is written under the heading at the left margin. It begins with a capital letter and ends with a comma. The greeting usually starts with 'Dear' and is followed the person's name and then a comma.

The body

The body of the letter is the information you are writing in your letter. The body of the letter is in paragraph form. The first line of each paragraph is indented.

The Closing

In the closing the first word is capitalized and you put a comma after the last word. Some examples of closings are:

When you finished writing your letter, reread it to see if grammar, punctuation and spelling is correct, and if what you wrote is clear to the person you are writing to.
