in very real and tangible ways to help

and support them and their families.

We were happy to be able

to meet the increased demand

for replacement home health and

mobility aids that were lost and

damaged. Personal hygiene items,

sterilisers and mobility aids were

also donated to those most in

need, with many trips made to the

Agrotrend gounds to support those

particular evacuees.

The people of Bundaberg

and the Wide Bay Burnett Region

can rest assured that the Friendly

Society Private Hospital is

continuing to treat, admit and care

for patients. Both pharmacies are

here to help people maintain and

manage their prescription needs

and can help manage and treat the

health risks associated with the

flood cleanup.

WHilST A mOnTH HAS PASSED since the

flood waters started to recede we are still

helping many people with products to protect

themselves during the cleanup as well as

providing advice and treatment for a range

of minor injuries. it is always safe to assume

that flood waters and flood affected items

that you come into contact with have been

contaminated with sewerage and therefore may carry a range of

viruses, bacteria and parasites. While the risk of infection is generally low,

the following steps will help minimise the risk:

1. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and clean water or use an alcohol based hand cleanser following contact with floodwater or items contaminated by floodwater. This includes after participating in flood clean-up activities, immediately after going to the toilet and before handling or eating food

2. Wear protective clothing such as boots and gloves when you know you will be in contact with floodwater, mud or handling contaminated items

3. Cover cuts and abrasions and ensure they don’t come into contact with floodwater or contaminated items

4. All cuts and abrasions should be cleaned, treated with antiseptic and covered immediately. However seek immediate medical attention if you have deep or puncture wounds, or if any wounds develop redness or swelling. it’s really important to know whether you are up-to-date with your tetanus vaccinations.

5. To avoid being bitten by mosquitoes, use a tropical strength insect repellent on exposed skin areas and reapply every two hours. Cover up as much as possible with light-coloured loose-fitting clothing.

To talk about what products will help protect you or treat some of the above complaints please speak with myself or one of my colleagues.

in the Wake of Major Floodingin THiS iSSUE

i would like to

cover some of

the precautions

that we should

take as we

recover from

the recent flood disaster.

i’m sure everyone knows someone

who has been severely affected,

whether it be through their own

inundation or indirectly because

their workplace is no longer

functioning.

There are some simple

precautions that need to be

taken, such as those outlined by

Pharmacist Thao le, however

if you do sustain a cut, wash it

immediately with copious amounts

of clean water and apply antiseptic,

such as Betadine. Closely observe

any cuts or scratches.

if you are cleaning out mud

wearing boots will protect your

feet to prevent scratches which

may easily become infected with

contaminated water.

if you do sustain a cut then

wash it immediately with copious

clean water and if possible apply an

antiseptic such as betadine. Closely

observe any cuts or scratches for

signs of infection such as redness,

swelling or pus discharge as the

rate of infections is much higher

from contaminated water and may

require antibiotics. i also encourage

people performing clean up work to

ensure their tetanus vaccination is

up to date, your GP can provide a

booster or alternatively Queensland

Health is providing tetanus

vaccination clinics. The incidence

of mosquito born diseases such

as Ross River Fever and Barmah

Forest virus will almost certainly

increase with all the water that has

been lying around, the only way to

prevent these disease is to avoid

being bitten so the use of insect

repellants and long clothing is

highly recommended.

The other issue that will arise is

the feeling of being overwhelmed

by the magnitude of this disaster,

some people have been through

this experience twice in two years

and these people may well struggle

to cope both emotionally and

financially.

i urge anyone in the community

who feels overwhelmed by recent

events to make contact with any

of the support agencies available,

such as lifeline, your church, GP,

friends or family, and talk about

your fears and concerns rather

than feeling like you must manage

on your own. Our community has

rallied together magnificently and

we will recover, but it will take time

and support.

GP, Dr. Lloyd Sussens
