We Are Walmart

When Store 5461 had its grand opening in September 2015, Gerry Kaady, assembler, led approximately 300 new associates in the Walmart cheer—using American Sign Language (ASL).

Gerry and his wife, Lezley Kaady, an apparel associate, are two of six deaf associates at Store 5461. “It’s nice to work with other deaf people,” Lezley says, “and we do get to help deaf customers.”

Indeed, the number of ASL–fluent associates at Store 5461 makes it a popular shopping destination for deaf customers, says Personnel Coordinator Francisca Singh-Blunk. “It makes them more comfortable to have someone to sign to.”

Even nondeaf associates are starting to pick up signs, to better communicate with their deaf colleagues and customers.

“We’re talking about doing a six-hour class for ASL soon. I’m excited about it,” says Gerry, who will be teaching some of the basics. “I love working here.”

Personal Shoppers A social media post made this store a top “pick” for online grocery customers.

When Pam Clingensmith, online grocery department manager, saw a question on social media about Walmart’s online grocery service, she posted a detailed answer. It described how her team of shoppers at Store 5241 in North Huntingdon, Pa., chooses items they’d be proud to serve their families and then readies the items for Pickup.

The response inspired hundreds of comments and questions, and average daily orders increased from 30 to 80.

Here’s how her team keeps customers satisfied.

• Being choosy. The team pays strict attention to sell-by dates and picks items off the cooler truck right when it comes in so customers get the freshest items.

• Getting it right. Every picked item is double-checked against the order.

• Planning ahead. Orders are readied in coolers an hour before the Pickup time, so customers can be served quickly upon arrival.

Online Grocery Assistant Manager Beth Powell is proud of how the team serves busy customers. “It’s like we’re giving that time they’d spend shopping back to them!”

Egg-citing Tradition

TRY IT MY WAY

Mindy has built her love of Easter egg hunts into a community gathering.

When our two daughters were little, we’d make a big deal out of Easter with egg hunts and baskets. I’ve also always enjoyed decorating and setting up seasonal displays. About 10 years ago, I had the idea to host an Easter egg hunt for the community. This will be my third store where I’ve done them. My daughters, my husband, and a few other associates get together and prepare for the hunt. We stuff about 1,500 plastic eggs with candy donated by Walmart.

To spread the word, we post fliers near the in-store Easter display. We hold the hunt on the Saturday before Easter weekend, either on a lawn outside the store or at a nearby park. To keep it fair, I divide the hunt area into three age groups. The Easter Bunny even shows up.

At the hunts, I’ve heard families talk about how they return year after year. I love seeing all the kids running around—even the tiniest ones who can barely walk!

1 8.5-oz package microwavable quinoa-rice blend

Carol Nixon and Deb Pollard instantly hit it off when they met at the Walmart National Grass Roots driver meeting in Bentonville, Ark. At the time, neither one expected how much their friendship would impact their lives.

Days before the Grass Roots event, Deb’s husband, Craig, had started kidney dialysis. Carol wanted to help, so after researching organ donation and her benefits through Walmart, she decided to donate a kidney.

The surgery took place last November and was a success. Carol has returned to work, and Craig is getting stronger every day. Both he and Deb are grateful for all the support they’ve had from Walmart. “We’ve received cards from all over the country,” Deb says. “At every store I visit, people ask how Craig is doing. It makes me feel good to know people care.”

The same holds true for Carol, whose facility helped raise funds for her expenses during the surgery. “If you asked me if I’d do it again, I’d say yes,” Carol says. “It’s an amazing experience to be able to help someone out like that.”

Da’Ronn Commer applied for a job at Walmart on his 18th birthday. Eleven days later, he interviewed for a deli position and was hired the same day.

“It was amazing,” Da’Ronn says. “A new start on life.”

Growing up, Da’Ronn was one of four kids in a house with no electricity or water. He later became homeless. “I slept in my car. It was tough,” he recalls. “But Walmart helped me—gave me some light.”

Da’Ronn embraced the opportunity. From unloading trucks to assisting in produce, he served customers with a smile. After he learned about Walmart’s GEDWorks program, he enrolled and earned his diploma. Now a support manager, he continues to work hard and inspire others, like Steven Nelson, department manager, deli.

“Da’Ronn showed me the way so I could become a manager,” says Steven, who used to work alongside Da’Ronn as a deli sales associate. “When I saw him move up, I said, ‘I can do it, too.’ ”

For a few weeks in March, Store 3436 becomes a sea of green. From the pharmacy to the Auto Care Center, associates dress up in green rubber noses, derby hats, and vests. Others volunteer to sell green merchandise—noses, pencils, and more.

They’re not obsessed with St. Patrick’s Day; they’re passionate supporters of LOGAN, a local nonprofit that assists people with autism and other developmental disabilities. The store participates in the annual Great LOGAN Nose-On campaign to raise awareness and funds to support the nonprofit’s mission in the community.

“We try to be creative with it,” says Ricky Urycki, support manager. “It’s a really fun sight to see.”

Ten years after the first event, support for LOGAN has expanded to all nine Walmart stores in the region and two Sam’s Clubs. Each year, the stores have a friendly competition. To date, associates have raised about $120,000 for the cause.

Jill Langford, LOGAN’s chief development officer, says she’s grateful for Walmart’s partnership. “The commitment of Walmart associates is truly energizing.”

“Roberto is very hardworking and committed to the company,” says Rebeca Blanco, compliance manager for remodeling, permits, and maintenance for Walmart de México y Centroamérica.

Roberto Gonzalez is just as committed to his work for the church. In many Latin American cultures, Semana Santa, the week leading up to Easter, is a time of spiritual celebration. For Roberto, it’s also a family tradition.

Like his grandfathers, Roberto helps carry floats of religious icons in a parade that travels through the streets of Guatemala City. He also helps set up his church’s altar and decorate statues.

Roberto appreciates Walmart’s decision to honor the cultural significance of Easter in Guatemala by keeping the days of Semana Santa as a holiday. “Semana Santa happens on a national level,” Roberto says. “Walmart helps us by making it so that everyone can participate in the activities. I feel proud to belong to this company.”

Long- Standing Sue holds the honor of longest-standing associate at her store.

I’ve been at this store longer than any other associate. I remember when four of us got our GEDs together in the early 1980s, and Walmart paid for it. Three of us still work here, and the fourth associate retired this past summer.

Walmart is a great place to work because of the people. Years ago, we lost everything when our home caught fire. I’ll never forget how every-one came together to help. They took up a collection and brought us clothes and food. We also got help from Walmart’s Associate in Critical Need Trust. We were able to build a new home on the same site.

Dedicated to Service Rosa cares about the community inside her store and out.

We’re a family here. We take care of each other. When the tornado came through Joplin in 2011, it was a horrible, sad time. Our people helped with the cleanup. Walmart dropped everything and rebuilt this store in less than six months.

Outside of work, my daughter and I volunteer at a local rescue mission. Once a month, we buy food and serve supper to between 80 and 90 people who don’t have homes. We wanted to be a part of this because the mission is much more than a place to eat. It’s a place to learn to be self-sufficient. We help out with compassion.

Fun and Family Walmart’s customer service and values spurred Linda to come aboard full time.

I had a full-time office job when I started working at Walmart for extra money. I worked both jobs for 10 years, but Walmart was more fun and more family-oriented, so I quit the other job. I love working with customers. That’s what Mr. Sam was all about—customer service.

I remember going to his house during one of the annual Shareholders meetings. The house and grounds were lovely, but I think people were expecting a palatial estate. We got a boxed picnic lunch and met him on the lawn where he was greeting people. I even saw his home office.

Going the Extra Mile Melinda values hard work and the flexibility to be there for her family when needed.

I’m thankful for the support Walmart gave me that helped me be the mother I dreamed of being. When my children were young, I was always able to attend sports events and other activities, thanks to support from management. They knew I gave 100 percent at work and would go the extra mile, and they gave me flexibility in return.

I learned all over again five years ago when my 3-year-old grandson was diagnosed with cancer. I was able to be with him and my daughter when needed, no questions asked. My family means the world to me, and working with Walmart has been a good fit for me and for my values.

‘Old Timers’ ClubConnie is grateful for the opportunities and the flexibility of her job.

A group of associates has been at this store since it opened—we’re called the “Old Timers.” I take that as a compliment.

The culture and values instilled in all of us by Sam Walton are important to me, and I try to pass them along to new associates. I tell them, if you’re flexible and work hard, the sky’s the limit.

I’m glad for the opportunities I’ve had in my career, moving up to department manager and then zone supervisor. Over the years, Walmart has always allowed me the flexibility to be off to spend time with family.

I’ve done a lot of different things in my time with Walmart, but the one constant has been customer service. There’s nothing I love more than helping others.

The first Sam’s Club opened on April 7, 1983, in Midwest City, Okla. Sam Walton said he was inspired to try the business model after learning about other warehouse club operations.

Sam said the opening of that first club gave him the same feeling of “chaos and excitement as the early days at Walmart.” Today, there are more than 600 Sam’s Club locations.

George DeLallo began his tiny market more than 60 years ago, just minutes from the store’s location. The company’s business now includes the distri-bution of fine Italian and Mediterranean foods nationwide. Among DeLallo’s biggest sellers at Store 3228 are its olive oil, pizza sauce, and potato gnocchi.

Scam Stopper Jan Goodwyn knew something wasn’t right. Jan’s customer wanted to wire funds to someone who told her that her grandson had been in an accident and needed money. Jan suggested the customer ask the person something only her grandson would know. “I didn’t want her to be hurt,” says Jan.

A few days later, the customer wrote a two-page letter to the store, thanking Jan for saving her from a scam. Store Manager Alexis Martinez says Jan took the time to earn the customer’s trust. “Jan went above and beyond to make sure her customer was safe and taken care of,” says Alexis.
