What’s Up in 2020?

Our Winter Fair Fundraiser kicks off this year, on Saturday, February 8th, from 10-3pm in Howell Hall at the Dennis Senior Center. We went from imagining an artful festival in this gathering place we built so many years ago, to making it a winter happening that brought people of every age in the community under our roof. We will have raffles and a silent auction featuring 4 Red Sox game tickets, choc-olates and bouquets of flowers, demonstrations, baked goods, art, jewelry, crafts and more. See our colorful flyer and pass on to a friend. Join us for this celebration of love the weekend before Valentine’s Day.Daffodil Day on March 16th is when we give 400 daffodils to Meals on Wheels recipients to bring the hope of an early spring.Red Cross Blood Drives occur in the spring and fall. Our first drive will be on Saturday, April 18th.Jazz in June, now in its 7th season, is our way of welcoming summer with a banquet of catered, gourmet food and the music of the great, American Songbook--jazz for all ages. Saturday, June 6, from 12-2pm.Annual Golf Tournament will be held in early June at the Dennis Pines. Our date has yet to be determined.

“Love Actually” at the Big Wrap on December 4th Look at all the Smiles of Friends Helping Friends

The Big Heart of the Big WrapWe share this Christmas tradition with you on our 40th anniversary. We give thanks to the volunteers who come, year after year, to wrap over 2,000 presents for 130 seniors who live alone or are in need. This year, they braved the snow and sleet, bringing their scissors and filling every corner of Howell Hall to wrap all afternoon. Without their commitment and your donations, the Christmas Giving Program would not have endured--now in its 34th year. A big hug goes to Art and Elizabeth McCormack who do-nated 130 tins of butter cookies. We also thank the VIP drivers who delivered the Christmas bags on Saturday morning, December 7th.

THE VETERANS’ COLUMNby Vern Ellars, Director

So many of you loved the following article we published in the fall of 2018, I am reprinting it in 2020 in honor of the fighter pilots of World War II.In Air & Space Magazine, the story of squadron command-er, J. Hunter Reinburg, is recounted. Reinburg was con-cerned about the morale of his pilots on a “tropical island with no fresh food and no refrigeration,” so he hatched a plan.mHe had his maintenance crew “pour a mixture of canned milk and cocoa powder” into an old, waterproof can that stored .50-caliber bullets orginally. The can was mounted to the side of the plane with wires, inside “an old belly-mounted drop tank.” The trick was to fly high enough (over 33,000 feet) to get the mixture cold. The first try failed. The ice cream tasted good but was not frozen. After another unsuccessful attempt, Reinburg decided to add propellers to the ammo cans and “the wind turned the propellers, which drove a screw inside the can, churning the mixture.” It worked! His men tasted at last-- real choc-olate ice cream.

In his autobiography, Combat Aerial Escapades,” Rein-burg said the ice cream flights soon became known as “Operation Freeze.” All went well until his boss, Colonel Caleb Bailey, got wind of the scheme and said “...you guys aren’t fooling me...I’ve got spies. You tell [Reinburg] I’m coming over there tomorrow and get my ration.”It seems Reinburg wasn’t alone in his ice cream making venture during the war. In Europe other pilots on B-17s made their own flavors; “according to a 1943 New York Times article...at least one unit used its P-47s to create a real delicacy, vanilla ice cream mixed with canned fruit.” Just another way they survived the war.
