In this issue we have included an envelope for our Annual Campaign. We hope that you will take a moment to fill it out and send in a donation. We appreciate any amount from $5 to $500. Your donations help us contribute in so many ways to the programs and services at the Milwaukie Center. Although local tax dollars, federal funding and fundraising provide the majority of the needs of the Center, the extra funds the Friends of the Milwaukie Center is able to provide makes a world of difference. Your donations help fund scholarships for classes, transportation and A Place At the Center (memory loss respite group). You also help fund special needs and handyman programs, the newsletter, special projects and much more. Thank you so much for your support, we couldn’t do it without you!

Center Supervisor's MessageThis October a group of Milwaukie Center volunteers will receive a special honor. The Emergency Firewood program was selected as a regional winner of the Governor’s Volunteer Award. After being selected by a team of judges, the program is now eligible for a state-level award. The program currently has a group of eight dedicated volunteers who cut, split, stack and at times even deliver the wood to low income seniors and persons with disabilities who are in need of heating assistance. My office window faces the firewood area and it has been a great pleasure watching how this group of guys has come together to make this program possible. They come every week to put in volunteer time, rain or shine. Not only are these guys doing a great service for their community but they also formed some lasting friendships. This is a great example of how volunteering can do so much for both the community and the individual who volunteers. Congratulations to this group, and thank you from all those people who will have a fire to keep them warm this winter. - Marty Hanley, Center Supervisor

LIEAP eligibility is determined using gross income (before taxes). The income guidelines are as follows: - One person household: under $1872.75/mo - Two person household: under $2390.08/mo - Each additional household member add $103.42

About the Friends of the Milwaukie Center The Friends began with a small group of volunteers who recognized a need when the Milwaukie Center first opened its doors in 1980. With the dedication of a small army of volunteers over the years since then, the Friends have grown into an organization that provides essential funds and support throughout the Center.

An important function the Friends perform is outreach to the community. We maintain a membership in the North Clackamas Chamber of Commerce and numerous other neighboring organizations. Our purpose is to share information about the Milwaukie Center while garnering support and partnerships from local businesses and organizations.

The Friends’ primary goal and function is to raise funds to support the programs and services of the Milwaukie Center. We do this in a variety of ways which you will read more about inside this report.

For anyone interested in learning more about the Friends, board meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month at 9:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome to attend or call at (503) 653-8100. All new ideas and comments are welcomed.

Friends of the Milwaukie Center, Inc.’s mission is to assist the Milwaukie Center in educating the citizens about the need for, and availability of, resources and services, especially for the aging and disabled, and to assist the Milwaukie Center financially to provide existing and needed services.

Mission Statement

Volunteers Make the Difference!Volunteers perform many jobs at the Milwaukie Center and the Friends are no exception. Our Board of Directors is an all-volunteer board. Fundraising ActivitiesThe Friends have ongoing activities that help us reach our fundraising goals. By participating in or supporting any of these activities, you are helping the Milwaukie Center maintain its programs and services.

Gift Shop The Gift shop has operated almost as long as the Milwaukie Center. Starting out as the Gift Nook, it was literally that, a small

nook in the Center. It has grown to the Shop we now know and love. Providing an outlet for craftspeople of all ages, you are sure to find a treasure you just can’t live without! The Gift Shop retains 20% of the proceeds for the Center.

Bingo This Thursday night staple has long been one of the Friends most reliable fundraisers. Bingo is a fun evening activity

for family and friends. Win cash prizes and visit the snack bar for your free popcorn. Please consider joining us on Thursday nights at 6:30 to play or volunteer.

Recycling Although we don’t see as many newspapers as we used to, they can be put in the large green container in front of the Rose

Garden. The Friends also recycle soda pop cans, used cell phones and ink cartridges. Just drop them off in the Friends office next time you are in the Center.

Brick Sales Engraved bricks are placed in the Sara Hite Memorial Rose Garden once a year. Proceeds benefit the continued

maintenance of the Garden.

Quilting Committee The dedicated women of the Friends Quilters meet every Thursday on the stage at the Milwaukie Center. They

complete quilts for customers and the proceeds are donated to the Friends general fund.

Annual Financial Report IncomeAs with most years, individual donations through the Annual Campaign and Endowment Earnings are primary sources of income for the Friends. We were especially blessed with a matching grant from Bob and Charlee Moore this year for our Annual Campaign. Other major sources of income are Bingo, Endowment earnings, Tax Aid donations and special events. We also continue to receive generous monthly donations from Bob’s Red Mill and Bob and Charlee Moore.

Annual Campaign ..........................$28,705 Bingo ...................................................$17,017 Endowment Earnings ...................$28,525 Gift Shop ............................................$7,000 Newsletter Donations ...................$922 Newsletter Sponsors .....................$4,550 Quilting ..............................................$5,696 Restricted Gifts ................................$22,280 Rose Garden Events .......................$2,655 Special Events ..................................$10,091 Tax Aid ................................................$13,347

Total .....................................................$140,788

ExpensesThe Friends’ sole purpose is to support the Milwaukie Center, even payroll costs are considered support as the Friends staff help solicit sponsorships and funds, provide outreach in the community, put on special events, serve on committees and much more.

The Friends give donations to several departments at the Center such as Nutrition, Transportation and Social Services (Program and Services support). We also support the Centerpoint Newsletter by paying for printing and postage costs. Those costs were down this year due to generous support from the Parks District.

Your donations help support all of our programs and services, large and small. We couldn’t do it without you.

Administration and Fundraising .............................. $37,792 Client Assistance Projects (CAP) Fund ................... $1,875 Class Scholarships ......................................................... $1,446 Gift Shop Expense (remodel) .................................... $1,613 Newsletter Printing, Design and Postage ............. $15,704 Operation Expenses ..................................................... $5,350 Program and Services Support................................. $24,000 Restricted Gifts ............................................................... $24,502 (Nutrition equipment and special projects) Rose Garden .................................................................... $1,906 Special Projects .............................................................. $24,760 (Measure support, donor recognition, quilt show support, band support, and more)

Endowment FundsEndowment funds are savings plans for the future. These funds are never spent, but the earnings are used toward programs and services at the Milwaukie Center. This past year, the six different endowment funds earned almost $30,000. The six endowment funds total over $600,000.

All gifts received in memory of a loved one are automatically added to the Endowment Fund as well as any bequests the Friends receive. In addition, $2,000 from the Thursday Night Bingo program is added to the Endowment Fund each year. We also receive donations that are designated for a specific area, which is why we have six different funds. They are:

Milwaukie Center Fund Directly supports the programs and services at the Milwaukie Center

Bob & Charlee Moore Nutrition Fund Directly supports the Nutrition department and Meals-on-Wheels.

Fran Whitehill Rose Garden Fund Provides maintenance for the Sara Hite Memorial Rose Garden

Scholarship Fund Assists with class fees

Joan Young Directors Fund Funds special projects at the Center

Doris Hurst Special Needs Fund Helping Social Services with client needs

There are many ways to remember the Milwaukie Center besides cash donations. The easiest and most painless way is to give through a “future” gift planned in the form of a bequest.

By naming the Friends of the Milwaukie Center as one of the beneficiaries of your trust, will, life insurance, retirement plan or investment account, you will help ensure a secure source of future funding for our programs.
