R USSIAN State Ballet will present “Swan Lake” at Shenzhen Children’s Palace on June 15 and 16. Composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1875-1876, “Swan Lake” is one of the most popular ballets in the world. The story, originally broken into two acts, was fashioned from Russian folk tales and tells the story of Odette, a princess who is turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer’s curse. Although it has been presented in many different versions, most ballet companies base their stag- ings both choreographically and musically on the 1895 revival by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, first staged by the Imperial Ballet in 1895, at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg. For this revival, Tchaikovsky’s score was revised by the St. Petersburg Imperial Theater’s chief conductor and composer Riccardo Drigo. Russian State Ballet is a first- class troupe that is affiliated to the Russian Ministry of Culture. It has performed in over 80 coun- tries and regions and maintains a reputation for outstanding performance quality. Dedicated to reviving excellent Russian ballets, Russian State Ballet preserves the important tradition of ballet history, and embraces high expressive art and ballet techniques.
