ACCESS TO DISCOVERY
Providing access to audiovisual archives is a huge challenge
Audience demands are changing as rapidly as consumer technologies
New tools to meet and anticipate these expectations need to be developed
The search experience must not just return accurate results but suggest new pathways of investigation
RTÉ Archives is collaborating with two leading research partners in Ireland to investigate how these tools can be developed in RTÉ

PARTNERS
Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI)
An internationally recognized centre for research into linked data and semantic web technologies
Digital Repository of Ireland
(DRI)
Ireland’s national trusted digital repository#FIATIFTADubai2013 Bríd Dooley: “FROM ACCESS TO DISCOVERY”
GOAL OF THE COLLABORATION
To deliver a Rich Content Discovery prototype across all the RTÉ Archives, enabling wider re-use of RTÉ Archive audiovisual material
Specifically, to enhance digital workflows in order to present a pilot content discovery web service that sits on top of RTÉ’s current databases, allowing searches across the different archives
#FIATIFTADubai2013 Bríd Dooley: “FROM ACCESS TO DISCOVERY”
APPROACH
1. Provide a selection of metadata and essence to DERI / DRI for test and experimentation purposes
2. Create new metadata models along semantic web principles
3. Build a test platform of sufficient robustness to prove the concept of the new model

DEVELOPMENT
1. Data survey
2. Architecture specification
3. Selection of pilot data
4. Retrieval and transformation of relevant data
5. Setup and integration of the metadata repository
6. Metadata enhancement
