Taking the time to listen to what is being said and not just responding to what we think has been said is half the battle. This week we are praying specifi- cally for open ears for the new day and the future. Jennifer is deaf in her left ear, and many times she has to read lips or turn her head or body to adjust how she listens. We as individuals and as a congregation may have to adjust how we listen. As a society, we tend to listen to respond. We are thinking of what we are going to say and the words we will use. Instead of listening to respond, we should listen to learn. Listening to learn is gathering information and responding in a manner that would add value to the conversation. A few things to specifically think about as we pray for open ears. First, pray for patience in listening. We have all heard the cliché we have two ears and one mouth, we should listen twice as much as we speak. Second, pray for understanding. The human brain thinks faster than we can speak. Understanding the fact that we are thinking ahead of the speaker gives us insight to developing ways to stay focused on the speaker. Third, be an active listener. There is more to the message than the words being used. The speakers body language, tone and voice inflection all lend to the message being delivered. Developing good listening skills will not only build stronger relationships across the board, but we will develop stronger families and stronger marriages by participating in a conversation. Satan understands the fact that listening has always been a weakness for man. We should take the advice James gives and be quick to listen and slow to speak. ~Andy Miller SUNDAY MORNING SERMON Ken Hardison “Rejoice Always” (Psalms 89:15-16 ) SUNDAY EVENING SERMON: SINGING Office: (615) 794-5267 Fax: (615)794-5342 News Line: (615)794-8885 Email: [email protected] Website: www.southernhills.net ELDERS: David Broome John Bufford Dan Cottrell John Cottrell Jeff Rhodes Stoney Warren DEACONS: ADVERTISING: Ryan Haedge, Cullen Rodgers BENEVOLENCE: David Cost, Matthew Ensor BUILDINGS & GROUNDS: DeWayne Johnston, Herb Jones, Matt Potts DAY SCHOOL: Chris Graham, Len McKnatt, Dave Sweeney EDUCATION: Dale Alden, Phillip McCullough, Mike Mizer, Daniel Winkler FINANCE & OFFICE ADMIN: Chris Graham, Clint Oppermann HEALTH & WELLNESS: John Dees MISSIONS: John Pratt, Thomas Waggoner NEW MEMBER: Matthew Ensor, Ryan Haedge SECURITY: Jimmy Campbell SENIOR MINISTRY: Herb Jones, Dave Sweeney TECHNOLOGY: Michael Meade, Cullen Rodgers WORSHIP: Herb Jones, Alex Melton, Dave Sweeney YOUTH: Jimmy Campbell, Jimmy Davis, Chris Doughtie, DeWayne Johnston, Michael Meade MINISTER: Dan Cottrell FAMILY LIFE MINISTER: Andy Miller YOUTH MINISTER: Cody Lovett SECRETARY: Katie Vanderpool ...from Andy Miller Oct 22, 2016 - Fall Festival Oct. 28-30, 2016 - Fall Retreat with Concord Road Oct 30, 2016 - Trunk or Treat Dec 29-30, 2016 - Equip Jan. 7, 2017 - Special Girls' Service Project Jan13-16, 2017 - Family Ski Retreat March 10-12, 2017 - Spring Retreat April 13-15, 2017 - Lads to Leaders May 21, 2017 - Graduate Reception Youth Oct. 28-30, 2016 - Fall Retreat - Our annual Fall Retreat will be with Concord Road at the Hickory Hills Camp in Dickson. “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” James 1:19 From time to time, we all find ourselves in difficult situations. Taking the

time to listen to what is being said and not just responding to what we

think has been said is half the battle. This week we are praying specifi-

cally for open ears for the new day and the future. Jennifer is deaf in her

left ear, and many times she has to read lips or turn her head or body to

adjust how she listens. We as individuals and as a congregation may

have to adjust how we listen. As a society, we tend to listen to respond.

We are thinking of what we are going to say and the words we will use.

Instead of listening to respond, we should listen to learn. Listening to

learn is gathering information and responding in a manner that would add

value to the conversation.

A few things to specifically think about as we pray for open ears. First,

pray for patience in listening. We have all heard the cliché we have two

ears and one mouth, we should listen twice as much as we speak.

Second, pray for understanding. The human brain thinks faster than we

can speak. Understanding the fact that we are thinking ahead of the

speaker gives us insight to developing ways to stay focused on the

speaker. Third, be an active listener. There is more to the message than

the words being used. The speaker’s body language, tone and voice

inflection all lend to the message being delivered.

Developing good listening skills will not only build stronger relationships

across the board, but we will develop stronger families and stronger

marriages by participating in a conversation. Satan understands the fact

that listening has always been a weakness for man. We should take the

advice James gives and be quick to listen and slow to speak.
