The events we celebrate at Easter happened a long time ago. In another very real sense, they are the ba- sis of our day-to-day experiences. The Gospels outline Jesus’ life story and we all share the broad outline of that story, this being: He was like us in all things, sin excepted. The rich symbols of Easter bridge the gap of over 2,000 years to remind us of the meaning of Jesus in our day to day lives. Like Jesus, we fear the pain that faithfulness to God may demand. The core of the Easter message is that out of death comes LIFE, life to the full. The grace of the Stations of the Cross Prayer Reflection held in the church on Thursday 29 March at 9.30am will assist us to enter into this mystery. I would like to invite our parents, pa- rishioners and friends to our Holy Week Prayer Reflection. Staffing News It is my pleasure to announce that Mrs Catherine Brunt has been appointed as Mrs Amanda Win’s replacement as she takes maternity leave from 30 th March. Mrs Brunt joined our staff at the beginning of this week for an extended handover. In the next month or so Amanda Win and her husband Henry will share in one of life’s beautiful moments; welcoming their first child into the world. We wish both Amanda and Henry God’s blessing at this very special time. Parents & Friend’s Donation I’m terribly excited to announce that our Parents & Friend’s Association are actively supporting the school’s Information & Communication Technology Plan by donating $20,000 to purchase iPads; primarily for use in our junior primary classrooms. As a school, we cannot meet the chil- dren’s needs alone and rely heavily on the Parents & Friend’s Association actively supporting the school in improving the teaching and learning of all of our students. I thank the P&F for their very generous donation and for continuing to support the learning and teaching initiatives that enhance the lives of the children in the school. Uniform Shop I recently received the resignation of Dawn Barker from the uniform shop. We have been blessed to have Dawn as a volunteer in the uniform shop for many years at Sacred Heart, and in my time in education, I have never met such a passionate and giving soul. Dawn’s contribution to our school has been incredibly selfless and words cannot express our heartfelt thanks and appreciation of her efforts. We look forward to farewelling Dawn formally early next term. In moving forward, the school has decided to employ someone to work in the uniform shop. The appointment process for this position will begin shortly and will be advertised on the Catholic Education of Western Australia website. I look forward to updating you in due course. Wishing you all a happy and holy Easter This year is one of the rare years where the Easter break falls outside of the school holiday period. The Easter break this year commences on Good Friday 30 March up to and including Easter Tuesday 3 April. Catholic schools are not open on Easter Tuesday. After Easter the students return to school on Wednesday 4 April. What a term it has been! As of Good Friday, I will be on long service leave for the remainder of the term. Mrs Vanessa Alaniz will be Act-ing Principal in my absence. I thank you for your support of Vanessa during this time. Taking this into account, I would like to thank the staff, parents and students for all of their efforts this term. It has been a very busy term and we have achieved a great deal. I have been impressed with the enthusiasm and commitment to learning displayed by our students and their ability to adapt and strive to meet the teach-er’s expectation of them over the term. I encourage all of our students to continue to strive for success in all areas to be the best person they can be. Thank you to all our parents who in many different ways have supported the school over the first term. Your efforts and contributions are highly valued. I encourage you to continue to support and be actively involved in decision making through the P&F and other opportunities that arise. Thank you to our staff who have worked tirelessly for our children throughout the term. Much has been asked of them and, as always, they have risen to the challenge. I can honestly say that I am proud of the way all teaching and non-teaching staff commit themselves to their jobs in a wholehearted way. Thank you one and all for your efforts and enjoy the well-earned holiday.

PROJECT COMPASSION CHARITY WALK

Last Friday Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 completed the annual 5km Charity Walk for Project Compassion. Students were acutely aware and empathetic of the various projects the money raised could make possible for those who are destitute and living in absolute poverty.

Mr Clive Maher visited every class prior to the walk to discuss our Christian obligation to serve those who need our help. Further to this, he showed students photos of the people he ministers to every year in India. In doing so the children found out leprosy was not just a disease in Jesus’ time. They also found out what being poor really meant. Mr Graham Maher gave a passionate speech before the walk commenced. It was obvious he had been touched after joining his father in his missionary work over summer.

On a warm day, students completed the 5km course in under 50 minutes. Upon completion of each km, their sponsor cards were signed by our Sacred Heart family officials. Many thanks to these parents and grandpar-ents who served on the day: Ann Huntly, Stephen Brosztl, Amanda Powe, Rouve Cappelluti, Kat Agostino, Roxanne Davis, Emma Seaman, Veronica Gracias, Nadine Rowe, Agnes Michalowski, Meroe Lacopo, Susan Mijatow, Gel Hardy, Marie Lebon, Ros Carroll and Russell Drayton-Witty.

In the ensuing weeks, before the term ends, students will hopefully be busy collecting all the money from their loyal sponsors. REMEMBER … YOU ARE MOST WELCOME TO ADD TO YOUR SPONSOR LIST. When all is collected please bring your money to school, together with your sponsor card. Collectively, our 8 classes are looking to raise $8000 to assist humanitarian programs around the world.

EASTER TUESDAY: School - Closed

A PARENT’S VIEW OF EASTER Parents have an awesome responsibility to raise children who can make good choices, love others, and fol-low their hearts, but they must allow the freedom to do this independently. As children find their independ-ence and set out into adulthood, parents experience a letting go. It is a joy to see young adults blazing new trails, but this independence can also lead to disappointment in the paths chosen. Loving parents accept that their child’s choices are beyond their control and that their hopes and dreams may not always be aligned. Many parents raise their children in the faith to later watch them shed their religious practices as young adults. What more can they do than ask the Holy Spirit to guide their child? No doubt Mary wondered about the choices Jesus made and yet, we don’t see her intervening in Jesus’s life, other than to encourage him at the Wedding at Cana. She stood firm as Jesus made his decision to place the lives of others ahead of his own.
