Part XI. of " Cuneiform #Texts from Habylonian Tablets, &C.," contains texts
from one hundred and fifty-ninc baked clay tablets, and fragments of the Kouyunjilr
and other collections. The texts are syllabaries, and may be divided into the
following classes :-
(I.) Syliabaries of the First Class. The text on each side of tablets of this
class is arranged in colun~ns, each of which has three divisions. 'The
middle division contains the cuueiform signs and groups to be explained,
that to the left their values in Sumerian, and that to the right their
As~yrian names (Plates 1-13).
(2 . ) Syllabaries of the Secorld Class. Each column of the text on tablets of
th is class coritains three divisions. In the middle division are the c u ~ ~ c i -
form signs and groups to be explained ; that to thc left colltains their
Sumerian values, and that to the right their Assyrian meanings
(Plates 14-28).
(3.) Syllabaries of the 'Thircl Class. Each column of the text on tablets
of this class contains four divisions. I n thc second divisiot~ arc the
cuneiform signs to be explained ; the first contains their Sumerian values,
the third their Assyrian names, and the fourth their Assyrian meanings
(Plates 29-41).
(4.) Fragments of miscellaneous Syllabaries (Plates 42-50),
The first edition of the texts of Syllabaries was made by the late General
Sir H. C. Rawlinson, Bart., G.C.B., who, in the second volume of " The Cuneiform
Inscriptions of Western Asia," London, 1866, gave facsilniles of many of the
important tablets and fragments which he hacl identified. Subsequent examination
of the Kouyunjik and other collections in the British Museum enabled various
scholars to publish additional and supplementary texts, which have shown the val~le
of even small fragments of this class in helping to complctc the Assyria~i Sign
List. Further researches which have been made in recent years have resulted
in the idcnt~fication of about one hundred and eighteen hitherto unpublished tablets
and fragments of Syllabaries of various classes, copies of all of which are given in the
prcsent part. Their numbers are :-ICK. 2,078, 4,145, 4,145a, 4,145~-/2, 4.263,

This new material has made it possible to recollstruct in a tolerably complete
form the Syllabaries of the First and Second Classes ; the reconstructions are given
on Plates 1-5, 14-18 and 24-25, arid are followed by copies of the fragments
upon which they are bawd. The material at present available will not admit of the
reconstruction of the Syllabary of the Third Class. T h e Syllabaries here given
are the most complete hitherto published.
T h e number of the second fragment from the left on Plate 28 (i.e., K. 8,436)
has been accidentally omitted from the lithographic stone ; and No. 33,329, a dated
Babylollian tablet and duplicate of Plates 16 and 17, Col. 111, 1. 63-Col. IV, 1. 7,
will be published in a subsequent part.
T h e copies have been made by Mr. K. Campbell Thompson, R.A., Assistant
in the Department.
