From Bob Railey’s Pen:
Spring Quarter Liturgical Schedule
The usual display of April through June schedule and
appropriate activity rosters will be posted on the sign-up
bulletin board in the chapel hallway from February 11
through March 11. You may use the schedule to sign
up for specific role(s) on specific date(s); you may use
the rosters to tell me when not to schedule you and to
expand the list of role(s) in which you serve.
Questions—ask Bob Railey. Completed schedules
will be distributed beginning March 18.
Switching with someone in a liturgical role
A note on the quarterly schedules asks that folks not ask
anyone to substitute who is not used to/trained to per-
form the role.
The best way to ensure that your role is done well is to
switch with someone else who has been scheduled; if
you cannot find someone to switch with, then look at the
posted rosters (by “master schedule” in sacristy) to find
others who are trained at the task.
There are reasons why those of us who perform particu-
lar roles are trained to do things in certain ways. From
the ways readings are introduced and concluded to the
ways ushers take up the collection and present the gifts
at the altar-table, a great deal of thought and discussion
has gone into our liturgy.
Discussions about bread and wine of the Eucharist At times in the past, we have had small amounts of conse-
crated “gluten-free bread” and grape juice available at each
Sunday Eucharist for those who wish them. At our last
Liturgy meeting, that subject was raised again. Our wide-
ranging discussion included the possibility of two diverse
options:
1) Make small amounts of G-F bread and grape juice or
non-alcohol wine available each Sunday OR
2) Make G-F bread and non-alcohol wine for everyone.
Option 1) would require significant changes in how those up
front handle the range of elements. Option 2) would require
a significant parish-wide discussion before we would make
such a change.
Opportunities for further discussion will occur in various
parish venues (Welcomers, Liturgy, LifeCycles, Vestry, etc.).

Vestry Highlights and
Annual Meeting by Jane Cisluycis
The Vestry met on Sunday, January 7, 2018, fol-
lowing the worship service. Agenda items dis-
cussed focused on planning for the Annual Meet-
ing (February 18th), personnel issues, finances,
and nursery needs.
The budget for 2018 will be presented to the An-
nual Meeting in its deficit form. The Vestry hopes
that parishioners will attend and participate in the
discussion and offer input on improving the finan-
cial health of St. Paul’s. The ministry developer/
rector letter of agreement was extended for six
months, per the recommendation of the personnel
committee. This will allow more time for financial
issues to be addressed.
Vestry discussed issues around the nursery. We
determined that the nursery will be closed through-
out the months that worship is conducted in the
Chapel. When it re-opens, the nursery will be for
children in Kindergarten or younger.
During the meeting a member of the congregation
came with a concern. She wanted to express her
feeling that significant changes in church liturgy
and the removal of the word Episcopal from bulle-
tins, were made without broad conversation among
members. Vestry members discussed this issue
and plan to dedicate a segment of the Annual
Meeting open for dialogue on this matter.
Elections will be held for three vestry positions:
one, held by Esiquio Uballe, who is eligible to run
again, and two positions which are currently va-
cant. Vestry members are reaching out to others
who may wish to run. If you are interested, please
contact Kathy at the office.
Annual Meeting--following the church service on
Sunday, February 18, parishioners are encour-
aged to attend the Annual Meeting in the Great
Room. Lunch will be provided by the Vestry.

Vestry Candidate – Emily Morgan Booth
I was born and raised in Bay City, Michigan. My parents raised me (and my siblings) in the
Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. Throughout my childhood, I was involved a great deal with
church - mixed choir, youth group, playing flute for many services and occasions, etc. I also
organized a few youth service trips to Wisconsin to work with disabled adults in my late teens/early
twenties. During my undergraduate education, I met my husband Patrick at Central Michigan
University. We got married in 2012 and have two boxer dogs, Abby and Levi. Our first few years
of marriage was spent in the Traverse City/Suttons Bay area, where I was employed with Suttons Bay
Public Schools, teaching 5th-12th grade music. I also taught children’s music for Imman-
uel Lutheran Church in Suttons Bay for a couple of years.
In 2015, I was offered the band director position at Bothwell Middle School, and that’s
what brought us further north. Patrick and I love the Upper Peninsula and the Marquette
area. We are settling in quite nicely, having purchased our first home in 2016. We con-
tinue to be inspired and pleased with St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Finding our niche in
the congregation is an enjoyable process, and I’m hoping that my passion for young peo-
ple can inspire our church family to continue growing and fostering the next generation.
My interest for serving as part of the Vestry comes directly from my experiences working
with young people and the church. Outside of church and work, I enjoy time with Pat-
rick and our dogs, the outdoors, cooking, learning the Irish flute, and knitting. I appre-
ciate your consideration and welcome any questions you might have.
